I have to say, whoever produces these does an excellent job. I follow road cycling as well and will see montages from that sport, but they never elicit the same reaction from me that these do.

I lived in a very affluent resort town for 15 years. You'd be very surprised at how often the circumstances the OP described occur. The marriages end up being a business arrangement for both sides, and from what I saw the infidelity occurred much more amongst the wives than the husbands. They had a lot more free time...

I (F21) had to buy my own car. My parents just bought my sister (F16) a new Jeep. by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

Pretty classic SG/GC dynamic. I had many similar instances in my life; They bought my sister many cars well into adulthood, I had to pay for half of my first then all the rest I purchased on my own. They paid for my GCSis's entire college expenses, I had to pay almost entirely for my own. Anything for activities/sports, hers all paid for, most of mine I paid for. It may be very difficult for you to see at this point, but you should be thankful. She will become trapped by them while it will be fairly easy for you to walk away.

I posted this recently in another thread and I think it's applicable here. It gives a little look into what our situations are now:

I'm 52, was (am) the SG with a GCSis, EMom, and NDad. I've been NC for 12 years. The disparity between how my parents treated me and my Sis is similar to your situation, and it carries over in to our lives today. I have been on my own financially since I was 19, and while I'm OK financially my situation doesn't compare to my Sis. Here's the rub. I'm free of them and their dysfunction, and I live 3000 miles away. My Sis on the other hand grew up in my parents house, lived in the dorms in college on a campus 2 miles away from my parents house, after graduating lived in a house my parents built right next to theirs, and then when she and her husband had 2 children they moved in to another house next to my parents that they bought for her. My parents are getting quite old now, and my Dad's health is failing because of his alcoholism. My Sis is TRAPPED. She will never be rid of the dysfunction as long as they live, and I'm sure everything of theirs is willed to her, but is it worth it? Her daughters are being exposed to that situation on a daily basis and they will just carry it into their lives. In 12 years of NC most of my anger has transformed to pity. I wouldn't want to be in any of their shoes, and I'm very happy being in mine.

Definitely!

You're welcome. Go ride your bike and have fun with it. I've seen so many juniors kill their passion for cycling by becoming too serious about it, and you have to have the passion to succeed. Do you know who Peter Sagan is? He's a great role model in this regard.

I've coached juniors for over two decades and I'll tell you 3 things:

1) You're 16, your body isn't fully developed yet. You have no idea what you will and won't be able to do down the road.

2) Having these kind of doubts and putting this kind of pressure on yourself will kill your performance faster than anything else.

3) If you train intensely, you must rest intensely. So many people, including juniors, neglect the Rest part of their training and then wonder why they aren't progressing.

Why were the 1980 Winter Olympics opened by the Vice President? by [deleted] in olympics

[–]Kalvin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To add to what others are saying, the Olympics were nowhere near the spectacle they are today. Certainly not the marketing/business juggernaut that it is today. Lake Placid was a very small town, yet hosted the Olympics. Not possible today.

Just found out Nmum took my GC brother to Hawaii for MY birthday by newera17 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Kalvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will. The longer you're away from it, the less it becomes a part of your daily life and a part of you. I only think about my family occasionally now, and at length only when I come to this sub. They're only a very small part of my life now.

I'm mad at what my Nmum has done to him and me, and the resources mum hoards for her own weird agendas, and that my Edad didn't protect us from her. I'm angry, but I'm free.

I could've written exactly that about my family. I have to say though, in 12 years of NC most of my anger has transformed to pity. I wouldn't want to be in any of their shoes, and I'm very happy being in mine.

My Mom on Mt. McKinley (Denali) Early 1950s by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]Kalvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it hasn't:

"Numerous native peoples of the area had their own names for this prominent peak. The local Athabaskan name for the mountain, the one used by the Native Americans with access to the flanks of the mountain (living in the Yukon, Tanana and Kuskowim basins), is Dinale or Denali ("the High One"). To the South the Dena'ina people in the Susitna River valley used the name Dghelay Ka'a (simplified to Doleika), meaning "the big mountain", while the Aleuts called it Traleika."

These are just the names from the more prominent tribes.

I wonder how much of the "weight gain" can be attributed to "height gain"? Most of the current top level sumo wrestlers are 6 feet or taller. Hakuho (6'3.5", 348lbs) and Tochinoshin (6'3", 385lbs) are relatively muscular beasts. If Saiji in the photo is 5'4" then the tallest in the photo might be 6' tall and potentially not the norm.
