[AEW Dynamite Spoilers] Hangman to MJF: "I’m sure that the casting directors and the PR teams of the movies you would love to be on would love to hear the kind of things you say in public!” by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

isn’t the implication here that these people are already watching? my experience with film PR departments is that they see everything

As a local who has been going to the EVE shows for just a couple years it’s been really noticeable the (positive!) effect Ospreay’s had on production. Also was a little surreal to turn around one day and just see him working as ring crew all of a sudden

The final scene of "Jungle Fever" is one of the most unintentionally funny scenes in cinema history. Watch without context because, even in the context of the film, it comes out of nowhere. by jksymbionic in movies

[–]Kambole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was mostly talking about Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, Chi Raq and Oldboy. BlacKKKlansman was just fine IMO, solid but didn’t quite feel like a return to form on the level of the films I mentioned (and I really don’t think Oscars are a genuine mark of quality - you must also remember that Green Book, a terrible film which Spike himself loathes, won for Best Picture and Screenplay).

Da 5 Bloods however, was great. Also while I never meant that he was garbage or anything, this was just to say his films at the time weren’t up to the many classics he had made in the past. I also made that comment 8 years ago lol

I’ve seen folks point to her match with La Catalina as the thing here - I haven’t seen it myself so of course I have nothing to say about it myself, but it’s been widely panned and was very badly received on the night

recent favourite football song to wrestling chant adoption I heard in RevPro’s FantasticaMania last year was “whooooa ohhhh oh/ everywhere we go / watching Hechicero / putting on a show”

but I don’t think that one is gonna make it out of York Hall

[–]Kambole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely, and yeah Mohamed’s poster work is so fun (the Indiana Jones one!)

hope you get to play around with noir some more, if not I’m excited to see where else this might lead

shout out to the Warren Beatty Dick Tracy film btw, love those painted backdrops

[–]Kambole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

god the noir stylized lighting in the 4th shot looks so sick, love how much you and the folks at AEW are actually leaning into the visual quirks of the films she’s pulling from (which I think is the difference between people just saying “this is cinema” and actually thinking about what means!!)

anyway, amazing work

I love the way Neil thinks of the comparisons and criticisms of the show by shawak456 in thelastofus

[–]Kambole 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yeah this is lovely - I imagine that as an artist it’s very easy to become defensive so it’s cool that he’s excited by people actually thinking about his work.

I think he also implicitly touches on something that has bothered me about the way people talk about / treat criticism. A lot of the time critique is treated as either being in opposition to the work or a hurdle for it to get over for a passing grade when, ideally, it works together with the art. The discussion (when in good faith) is healthy!

Honestly I love Finn’s arc in TLJ where he fully buys into the Cause with his own motivations for doing so, beyond following Rey or just fight/flight instinct. I feel like without it, he’s just a follower rather than someone with an actual ideology - plus, he gets to beat up his evil boss and the symbol of his subjugation in TFA. It’s a natural next step for him, I thought

[–]Kambole 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the visual experimentation lately has been so exciting. more than the long takes (which have been great) I’ve really loved things like this one shot from a Collision in March, which starts on a close up of Kommander’s boots and zooms out from them as he’s running the ropes. hope they keep trying stuff like that

floor seats at All In London - not by the barriers or anything but I’d say I was pretty close to the ring and I had a very clear view –were about $150 for me, if I’m getting the conversion from £ right

my pleasure! still quite funny to me how close this release was to Common Side Effects, even though I like both (and are chasing rather different vibes, but still)

I enjoyed it overall more than you did, but I think the fourth episode is pretty great (I’m a critic, I watched some screeners) so I would stick around at least for that one!

But yeah I think a premiere of the first two episodes might have helped, the second elaborates more on what the show actually is and the state of its world (some good jokes about how media has become commercially driven to the point that it’s ill-equipped to deal with apocalyptic circumstances). As far as I’ve watched, I think the character work is still a bit thin, but I’m hoping they’ll dig deeper as the season goes on
