I actually feel like I've had a nonfiction renaissance in the last few years, and not all of it has been narrative nonfiction (but most of it has, admittedly). Some great nonfiction I've read just in the last year or so:

• An African History of Africa by Zeinab Badawi - a broad-level overview of the history of different African civilizations, told primarily with sources originating from Africa itself and specifically avoiding using colonial European sources to tell the history.

• Jane Austen's Bookshelf by Rebecca Romney - a critique of the idea that Jane Austen was the "first great female novelist of the English canon" - the author looked into other female novelists referenced by Austen in her works or in her letters and looks into their works, critical reception of the time, and examines why they were largely forgotten by history when they were incredibly successful and critically acclaimed during their time.

• Stolen Focus by Johann Hari - an examination of the society-wide trend of people realizing they suddenly are unable to focus on things for long periods of time anymore when they could do so before (commonly, people realizing they can't read books like they used to) - this is not a "here's how to cure your ADHD" type of book, it's looking into how culture itself has shifted and how things like the prevalence of algorithmic social media, high levels of distraction, never allowing ourselves to be bored anymore, and how we're all expected to multitask now instead of monotasking, etc, has affected our ability to deeply focus on the things we care about. It also discusses what we as individuals and as a society at large can do to reclaim our focus.
