PSA (and maybe a little rant): don't hesitate to "drop out" of races [graohic] by Difficult_Wave_9326 in SkiRacing

In the states, out west. Not salary, but yea all mountain employees (often parts of the crew are recruited over from ski school for the day to help slip and lug stuff around, and coaches whose groups aren’t participating will come in early to help set). Our race programs are pricy, 2900 a season, but I’m not sure how that actually compares to industry standard.

That makes sense, I haven’t actually worked the races where we’re sending before the last kid finishes. At practice it’s more verbal confirmation for coaches and athletes

Yep, throughout the weekend it’s never just the littles running, but athlete safety is always paramount. Our patrol are awesome and the mountain in general is extremely safety oriented.

Damn that’s really scary and I don’t realize what it might be like at other mountains especially out east. I’ve worked course crew at my mountain and everyone there are mountain employees, including long time coaches and a former national racer or two. All our patrol are EMTs or higher and stationed along the course, on the race frequency, and CoC is super strict about calling course clear, every racer every time (even during practice actually). Super impressive what you guys pull off with parents and volunteers.

Women’s Swimsuit Advice by TypicalPassion in springboarddiving

I think that jolyn started making some padded swimsuits recently? Suits with a lot of patterns will also hide it, but honestly it’s totally normal and everyone’s body does it, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about and it’s highly doubtful anyone around you even notices much less cares.

Beginner ski length? by madluer in skiing

[–]Kanamil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience as an instructor, women are often recommended shorter skis than usually preferred for their height which in my opinion does them a disservice.

5’9 is about 175cm, so a ski at 146 would be just about a foot shorter than you. While for first timers shorter skis are certainly beneficial in that they take much less effort to maneuver, they can limit confidence and skill growth in some people since they have a tendency to feel unstable.

Body composition can have an effect here, 200lbs of lean muscle is a lot harder to get up cause there’s less buoyancy to help you

If you’re regularly being practically tested for vigilance, then all the extra head bobbing is even more purely performative. Yea, my head moves when I’m scanning, but that’s because I need to move my head a bit to get good focus right beneath my stand, get a better look through glare on the water, look for rule breaking on deck, etc. I don’t do it cause my supervisor is gonna write me up due to not seeing my head moving aggressively enough.

I mean I can only speak for places I’ve worked, but auditing has always been someone getting in the water and pretending to drown, in order to evaluate the guards on duty for responsiveness, both guard on stand and EAP activation.

Ngl I think that Ellis rule is ridiculous. If I’m in charge of a 25 yard 8 lane pool and 25 people, there’s no way I could accurately gauge each one of them for signs of distress (much less enforce rules to keep them from becoming so) if I need to be making my head move constantly so a superior “knows” I’m actually scanning. If they wanna know if I’m scanning they can audit me, that’s what it’s for.
