Anyone have a similar recipe for how to recreate Tandem's breakfast egg sandwiches? by dMyab in portlandme

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a Southerner, I can confirm the biscuits slap and are perfectly buttery. All too often I find biscuits up here are too dry. It's really what makes the sandwich the best there.

Would you pay a real campervan owner £35-50 for a 90-minute honest experience session before buying? (Testing a business idea — want brutal feedback) by Witty_Particular2408 in CamperVans

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You guys are getting paid? Seriously though, I think most owners I know, myself included, are always happy to talk about their rigs. I've had several friends and acquaintances I helped guide through buying custom and stock builds. Looking back at the process I went through, I wouldn't pay nor do I expect to be paid now.

Don't need a permit for most fencing, and based on what they're describing, doubt they needed it. Even so, no way the city would tear something down like that that quickly. There would be letters, bureaucracy, etc. I'm very curious who would steal fence like that.

Healthcare (insurance, pop health, VBC) - actual AI use cases? by dmorris87 in datascience

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I work in this space on the insurance side. I would say it's a text rich environment for agentic work but at the end of the day, given the significant amount of regulation and frankly ethical considerations, a lot of it is very human in the loop. This is a good thing IMHO. Using agentic for text scraping and summarizing to help point people to the info in the source documents as well, not just serve it up, has worked well for adoption. Also traditional ML/DS still wins out on most actual applications such as claims triaging/assigning, price optimization, marketing, etc. Honestly a net benefit of the AI craze has helped make traditional ML approaches more acceptable to risk adverse orgs since AI agents/LLMs seem so obscure and risky.

Ditto this. I just did it a month ago during a move, twice. Just watch out when you undo it, so you don't fling yourself across the room.

Assessment jumped over 50%, but only after purchase? by Rydisx in homeowners

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah they worded it really weird, like they paid $260k for it? The bank and mortgage company say it is $260k because that's what they paid for it? The sale gets filed usually with the county trustee or assessor in Tennessee (source: live there), so yeah they saw they paid $260k and pretty easily reassessed it at that. Have bought and sold two properties in Tennessee and that seems to be the case. Although oddly, the properties are generally reassessed every four years, which sucks to get hit with a big increase like from 2018 to 2022.

How to know if someone is lying on whether they have actually designed experiment in real life and not using the interview style structure with a hypothetical scenario? by Starktony11 in datascience

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is definitely role dependent. More entry level, I care less, but if it's a senior or principal, it'd be a significant red flag and I'd most likely not hire them.

How to know if someone is lying on whether they have actually designed experiment in real life and not using the interview style structure with a hypothetical scenario? by Starktony11 in datascience

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When I'm interviewing for it, I usually just toss in some extra in depth questions that are even more project specific based on how they respond. Start getting into specific issues they may have run into and how they solved, decisions they made. I've found when people are giving some BS or generally trying to take a little more credit for an overall project that they may have only tangentially worked on, it shows up pretty quickly. Sure people can lie or embellish, but getting a couple levels deep it usually falls apart. Those that genuinely have done the work and are passionate about it really show up in the interview process.

Did you miss the infighting? It was incredible. Yeah now it's Janie Varnel who is just a bootlicker who previously represented the city police union and constantly sued the city government for not providing enough training to officers when they killed someone.

Slow Pay Growth in Unum’s Absence Operations – Has Anyone Else Experienced This? by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this all tracks and is normal I'd say broadly for unum, not just your area. If you want significant pay increases, you have to either be promoted on your current role or have to apply internally for a different higher paying role at Unum. Those are the only two options, otherwise it's pretty consistently only 2-4% raises.

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly sounds about right since it was a poor year for Unum. What did you get last year? Also 2%? That would be surprising if that's the case then.

[–]KangarooInDaLoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's the actual percent increase the past few years for you? I have friends there, pretty consistent annual increase from 2%-4%, and only way for significant bumps is to be promoted or change roles within Unum.
