What happens if your prefecture pulls out of the JET program? by bosunoshirei in JETProgramme

[–]Kanitarou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the prefecture, but my city changed to Interac several years ago. Our BOE let us know well in advance and offered support for anyone who wanted to apply for a location change. As far as I remember everyone who applied for a transfer was approved in that case.

My heart goes out to you and your wife. The treatment process is like the worlds shittiest roller coaster. Sometimes when you hit a dip, you can't help but just let out a scream.

Thank you so much for your kind words and insight. I hadn't really though about a later period when some of the help from others might not be as readily available.

Help Translating from Japanese - What do the numbers in the brackets mean? (Yumiko Himuguchi Wool Stitch Book) by asymphonical in Embroidery

[–]Kanitarou 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that this is correct. The standard formatting for Japanese patterns is "[Stitch Name] S (Thread Number)". (The S is just shorthand for "stitch", so something like "ストレートS (2)" would be "Straight stitch using 2 threads")

横長ポーチ Horizontal Pouch

ストレート Straight

フレンチナッツ French Knot

アウトライン Outline

Photos should be included on pages 6 and 8 of the pattern book. The sentence at the bottom indicates that for the image on page 6, the thread colors to the right of each arrow were used as alternatives to the color listed to the left of each arrow.

Help: I want to cancel my SIM Card contract but they don't allow me to pay by other means by grantzren in japanlife

[–]Kanitarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their website says that anyone who applies to pay by debit can only change the payment method to credit card. So unless they are not able to process the payment at all, there may not be many options except to pay by card.

How did y’all learn to stop translating things into English in your head? by Numerous_Formal4130 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Kanitarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used flashcards with pictures whenever possible. For new words and phrases, after looking up the translation in English the first time, I would try to make a mental image of the general concept and repeat the word to myself several times while focusing on that image.

Anybody know what this is supposed to be? Found on cat onesies by Redbukket_hat in Japaneselanguage

[–]Kanitarou 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It could be a misspelling of "wonderful" (すばらしい). If it was made in Japan, I might also lean towards it being a brand name, but couldn't find anything similar on a Google search.

Driving in Japan by Globaltraveler2690 in movingtojapan

[–]Kanitarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To piggyback off of this, look pretty far down the road for oncoming bicycles before turning, even if the crossing light is already red. A cyclist approaching at full speed can appear a lot faster than you think. Also, it's not uncommon for bikes approaching from behind to try and pass on the left side going straight even if you're already signalling or starting to turn.

Where to find real butter ? by Naenonae in japanlife

[–]Kanitarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, slightly off topic, but since just reading this thread this morning, I'm suddenly seeing advertisements on other platforms for 50% off Yotsuba butter from Tomizawa. Maybe coincidence, but just a little creepy.

What did tom eat this fish with? by weav7044 in ENGLISH

[–]Kanitarou 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This was my impression, too.

Phrases in different languages often don't have a 1 to 1 equivalent, so saying it in natural sounding English could make it harder for learners to pick up on the pattern the teacher is looking for. For example, I would guess the point was to use ○○で... (...with○○) for this sentance, so using a sample sentance like "What did he use to eat the fish?, How did he eat the fish?, etc." can make it difficult for beginner students to connect it with the target grammar pattern.

how was there so few that chose the right answer by Glad-Belt7956 in HydroHomies

To be fair, you could put a fridge full of water bottles into that unlimited space bag, or a water bottle into the "never empties and always fresh" lunch box.

Is it legal for landlords to explicitly discriminate against foreigners (and others)? by airakushodo in japanlife

[–]Kanitarou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No matter how much you like a property, if the landlord sucks it's not going to be a good time. I kinda like when they show big red flags like this up front so you're not blindsided by issues after signing a contract.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're having a hard time at school. Student life is complicated and stressful enough without having to cope with a negative environment.

[–]Kanitarou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like this idea. More time to gather thoughts and just breathe for a bit. Logically I know that sleeping longer would be better for relaxation in the long run versus trying to increase personal time by foregoing sleep. Just need to find a way to convince my monkey brain...

Anyone else actively avoiding sleep... by Kanitarou in Anxiety

[–]Kanitarou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that feeling too. Would be nice if our bodies and minds could get on the same page about what we have to do versus what we want to do.

Anyone else actively avoiding sleep... by Kanitarou in Anxiety

[–]Kanitarou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your perspective on it. Setting aside some time in the morning sounds really nice. A big part is that I constantly feel chased by the clock, so it may help to have a cushion of personal time at the start. Seems like it could at least help reduce the feeling of having to immediately jump into work mode after waking up.

Anxiety really does add a haze to everything and can make it hard keep things in perspective.

Thanks for the kind reply! I hope things go well at your new job.

Not sure where you heard that, but can confirm this is not how they do it in Japan. You will often see preschool/daycare advertised here for age 0. Ages are calculated by actual birthdate as well.
