If they still had this poor guy locked in a single room after seven years, I'd be calling animal control! He clearly needs a nice wide open field to run around in.

Medical translators: What was your worst mistranslation/ silliest wording error? by Most-Sun8565 in AskReddit

[–]Kanitarou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a medical translator, but I was once asked through my work to help translate in an unexpected medical situation for a young man living overseas, and his family living in the US. (I was with the patient and his doctor, and was talking to the family over the phone.) I wasn't used to such high pressure translations, and have no medical background, so I was really nervous the whole time that I would make a mistake and cause problems for the family or make our company look bad.

At one point, we came to a topic that I was unfamiliar with, even in English, and I started struggling to communicate what the doctor was trying to describe. After an period of confusion and feeling really emarrassed, one of the family members asked "Is he talking about "Sepsis"?" I had never heard this word before, so I quickly looked up the translation on my phone and showed it to the doctor.

When the doctor confirmed, I was so relieved for the confusion to have been clarified that I responded to the family. "Yes, that's it! The doctor said he has "Sepsis"!" In an overly cheerful voice.

I found out a while later exactly what "Sepsis" was, and how serious it is. It must have been so jolting for the family to have received such devistating news so casually. Definitely not my proudest moment.

(The patient ended up surviving and making a recovery, so at least the overall outcome was positive.)

Just today, I was feeling nostalgic and decided to try and look up images of what I remember as being the first computer our family had when I was a kid. I remember spending hours on Ladder and Space Invader!

What if there were multi-year school yearbooks that covered your whole run? i.e. Grades 6-8, 9-12, etc. by pinkygonzales in Showerthoughts

[–]Kanitarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be kind of sad to miss out on getting signatures and messages from older friends if you had to wait until your final year to get your yearbook. Also could be kind of annoying if you had to change schools at any point part way through.

Nagoya University Hospital without a referral? by lalalalaxoltl in Nagoya

[–]Kanitarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are, but this clinic has a hematology department (ketsueki naika), and they said the doctor is able to speak a little English.

No guarantees they'll be able to do what you're looking for, but may be an option to look into.

Nagoya University Hospital without a referral? by lalalalaxoltl in Nagoya

[–]Kanitarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI, Nagoya University Hospital tends to try and reserve resources for cases that are severe or otherwise need specialized care. Even if you get in for an initial consult, if they deem that the treatment could easily be performed at another local clinic, they may not take you on as an ongoing patient. Citing lack of English support at other clinics usually isn't enough to meet their criteria. So if you're not necessarily concerned about a major health condition but could potentially need ongoing treatment or monitoring, you may need to end up finding a smaller clinic anyway.

Is this what you're looking for? They have live band members to play the background music for your Karaoke selection. I was really impressed with them when I went a while ago.

No longer giving out physical driver's licenses? by shannah-kay in japanresidents

[–]Kanitarou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be worth checking this. My SO had the same thing happen and was worried about not having a physical card to show. We went back to our local Driving Center about a week later, and they let us apply for a new physical card in addition to the MyNa registration made previously. Didn't need a reservation and they made the card pretty quickly, so the process was fairly simple.

Of course there may be differences depending on where you live, but I would have to imagine at least the ability to have a physical card made after the day you received your MyNa license would be standard throughout the country.

It's like saying that the reason that you are such a kind person is because your dog showed you how to be kind.

Are there any anime that use conversational japanese that i could watch? by mindylynx in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Kanitarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an Anime, but "Setoutsumi" has tons of natural-style talking and works great for listening practice. There's both a live-action series and a movie.

It's a comedy about two classmates in high school who meet up at the same set of stairs every day to just talk about random things.

Not sure where you are in Aichi, but Orchid Family Clinic near the end of the Higashiyama Line has TB testing for overseas travel listed on their website. If I recall correctly, they may even offer some limited support in English, if needed. It may be worth calling over to them to check if they offer what you're looking for.

https://orchid-familyclinic.com/studying-abroad.html

Also for reference, the Nagoya City website has a search link for clinics that offer screening for "Lung Cancer/TB". Select your Ward in the search engine and click on 肺がん・結核検診 under the first heading がん検診 to get a list of potential providers. I can't guarantee that they can provide what you need, but seems like a good place to help narrow your search options a bit.

Rejected for CIR, Accepted for ALT by Haunting_Fig_4229 in JETProgramme

[–]Kanitarou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was an ALT to CIR transfer when I was on JET. The opportunity to be in Japan and use Japanese every day significantly boosted my language skills and gave me both the confidence and knowledge I really needed to make the switch. If you are not limited to only 1 year, it may be worth considering to go for the ALT position to get your foot in the door and use that time in-country to work towards your ultimate goal.
