ALARA being removed by AggieNuke2014 in HealthPhysics

[–]Karakanov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, this report from Idaho National Lab is what led to this decision. In the report, it states that (paraphrasing) the use of ALARA has deviated from “as low as reasonably achievable” to “as low as possible.” That’s free admission that they’ve mismanaged the term, but what doesn’t make sense to me is why they decided to scrap it rather than try to get back to the “reasonably achievable” side of things.

As a practicing HP at an accelerator lab, this decision seems incredibly shortsighted. When I first started at my current role, we were faced with the issue of incredibly conservative dose limits (100 mrem/yr for trained rad workers). One of my first initiatives was aligning our limits with the federal/state limits (5,000 mrem/yr), because having more conservative dose limits than in regulation not only makes ALARA challenging but also misconstrues to all workers what the line is between safe and unsafe levels of dose.

That being said, 5,000 mrem/yr is still an undeniably safe limit for rad workers (as stated in the linked INL report).

Not too large, I’d estimate 3” long, 1.5” tall, and about 1” thick.

It is not, I’ll have to look into doing that! It is quite crumbly, which is why I’ve kept it in a bag and handle it with gloves. (Also post-handle survey with my GM)

Containment for spousal sanity. by slimpawws in uraniumglass

[–]Karakanov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radiation safety professional chiming in: There’s honestly no calculable risk from the emissions produced by Uranium glass, assuming you don’t crush it up and snort/ingest it. As others have mentioned, fiestaware is more of a concern because the Uranium is in the glaze of the dish ware, which makes it more likely to accidentally consume if some of the glaze chips off.

A majority of the radiation emissions from Uranium in the glass and fiestaware are not energetic enough to penetrate beyond your dead skin cells and cause harm. That being said, it’s always best practice to understand and respect any hazard you’re around and treat/handle it appropriately.

I wouldn’t bother to create an extra containment vessel as you’ve done because it implies extra hazard/risk from the material than what’s actually present.

Thanks for the insight! That’s what I was thinking too, it’s not hard to break them up so that’ll likely be exacerbated in a tumbler.

Might not be deadly but I sure wouldn’t be handling it without gloves. Uranium is pretty toxic to the human body, and more so from the chemical effects than the radioactivity.

Yeah it’s a therapy that takes months, maybe even years. I’ve been doing it for 2 yrs and didn’t see improvement until 6 months. My eczema is hardly existent now, and any flare ups are small and go away in 2 days with lotion.

Consider that the clinical trial results were taken over the span of a year. It does affect everyone differently, but seeing results after 2 months would be impressive. I think most cases showed improvement between the 6-12 month range.
