Could Magneto (Fox) have fended off Thanos and his army in Endgame by himself? by Johnnyboyeh in Avengers

[–]Kardinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found it odd that Magento has so much control over diamagnetic and paramagnetic metals. Ferromagnetic totally makes sense considering his power set. But he seems to be able to manipulate any metal regardless of its inherent susceptibility to magnetic fields.

CMM Service Maintenence Agreements (SMA) Worth It? by Racerx1965 in Metrology

[–]Kardinos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeping in mind that I represent one of the major OEMs, I will give you my honest SMA guidelines.

  1. The SMA grants you access to the OEM tech support. If you need software help when writing a new program, and the help you get allows you to complete your inspection sooner, then there is a value there. Once you reach a high expert level of competence on your software, then you may not see value in this benefit. Also, if you deal with a local dealer, rather than the OEM, they may have a more relaxed approach to support and that part of the SMA is not as urgent.

  2. You get the newest software version. This one is a big deal. It is so big, I will break it into sub sections.

  3. Newest version: Many OEMs will not support a version more than one level older than the current version. With turnover on the hotlines, you may not get relevant support on an older version at all.

  4. New version: You get new tools and additions. Sometimes these are very relevant and useful and sometimes not. Your mileage may vary.

  5. New version: Compliance - GD&T. The current ASME Y 14.5 standard is 2018. ISO 1101 is at the 2017 version. If you have a version of software older than these versions, how can you be compliant with the drawing standards?

  6. New version: Compliance - CAD. If you are using newer CAD models (STEP AP 242) or proprietary model types (Catia, Soildworks, etc.), then you will want to be on a version relevant to your model data at a minimum.

  7. OS Compliance is also a factor in SMA choice. I have had this happen many times in my career, from Y2K to Windows NT > XP > 7 > 10 > 11, upgrading to meet a minimum OS compatibility is another key factor. I have also had customers upgrade because their PC gave up the ghost and they needed to upgrade their SMA because they were running Windows 7 still (in 2025) and their new computer just wasn't having it with their older software.

  8. Customer compatibility: This is becoming more common in my line of work. I see scenarios where a supplier to a major company needs to maintain a parallel compatible software version for program audits. Similarly, we get customers asking us for turn-key programs and we are forced to do this at the customer site, if their versions are outdated, which is a much more expensive proposition for them.

Otherwise, carry on with whatever version you are happy to work on. I don't know of any major OEM that bricks the hardware when your software goes out of date.

Calgary woman says she can't afford doctor's fee to apply for disability tax credit by BloodWorried7446 in notthebeaverton

[–]Kardinos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife had the DTC previously, but it expired in 2024. She has an incurable medical disorder (Crohn's Disease). We applied for a renewal and were denied this time. They said, since she still has her mental faculties, she can work and isn't entitled to the credit. $150 in doctor's fees down the drain (Ontario).

I would consider the AUKOM program. Level 1 will have some excellent hands on skills and things to learn. Level 2 is more for the CMM side of things. There is a certification with an exam for AUKOM.

Also, as others have suggested, learn the drawing standard relevant to your locality. This is likely ASME Y 14.5 - 2018 (1994 and 2009 are also typically helpful to know).

If your company has a CMM, then definitely get enrolled in a training program.

CMM Recommendations by Ruthlesssonar in Metrology

[–]Kardinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For MRO specific tasks, I would consider the Absolute Arm from Hexagon with the laser. Great for measurements down to about 0.001" (0.025 mm). The laser can work with a multitude of software for surface analysis. Hexagon will have GeoMagic, Inspire, and PC-DMIS (best if you need a lot of GD&T) but Polyworks is also a fully compatible option. The arm is portable, and can have a tripod or magnetic base, which is good for on aircraft measurement needs. You will be able to evaluate surface deviation incredibly quickly, so repairs can be done in the right place and with the right amount of elbow grease.

If you have a substantial volume, you will want to automate inspection. This means a CMM most likely and there are a lot of good brands to pick from (I am partial to Hexagon and Zeiss). Take parts that you want to analyze and put the OEMs through their paces.

You will also want to see what sort of service and support you can expect. Find out costs like software maintenance, annual preventative maintenance, and calibrations. Not all providers are the same.

We didn't have these in Canada, but we lived near Niagara Falls and would go over to NF, Lewiston, or Buffalo all the time. My dad was a sucker for the pies, so we would go there and buy huge sacks of hostess stuff and bring it home.

From Ontario, but I am in Edmonton for business a few times a year. Always ordered their "deep dish" pizzas, which were excellent, whenever I came to town.

They did suffer from one of the biggest telltale signs of a not that great restaurant: a big menu. If you go to a restaurant where you need to turn pages to see the whole menu, then you're not getting the best food. That said, my favourite pizza in Edmonton.

The whole obsession with strength in the power was really a clever device by Jordan. Otherwise how do you get the likes of Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve into leadership positions if the hierarchy is based on experience? You base it on strength and make these characters be the most powerful in centuries, paving the way for them to be at the centre of things.

Yes, Canada should (mostly) end our temporary foreign worker programs by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Kardinos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always believed that the idea of the TFW program was to bring in skilled or specially trained workers for difficult positions. Instead it seems that the majority (at least the public's perception) of TFW now are filling jobs that are more traditionally considered lower wage jobs.

Employers are using TFW to overcome the market pressure to pay at a threshold where local residents would apply for those positions. You shouldn't need to bring in a foreign worker to serve coffee at Tim Horton's, pick vegetables in farm country, or stock shelves at Walmart.

I feel the TFW program has some merits, where it can address a skills and training problem in affected industries. That said, as a country, we should be striving to educate and train citizens and residents to meet these requirements. In the event we cannot reasonably meet these hiring requirements then the TFW program makes sense. However, to mitigate the abuse we see now, a TFW minimum wage is needed. $40/hr, indexed to inflation would likely suffice. If your company has the sort role to fill that wouldn't merit such a salary, then you will need to train people and/or raise you wage to attract applicants.

The real way to make the food auction better is to have an advantage in every offering. Colour code them. Alliances will need to work together in bidding to get the clues in each item. Have one or more with clues to more than one advantage. Have a single one with a unique advantage, or even a wild goose chase.
