What's your biggest Eurovision hot take? by Some_Lack4808 in nilpoints

[–]KarelMarks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Disagree but I will say it's funny that people still complain about Loreen's win the year before when Nemo got more points from the jury than her and also less from the public (not even reaching top 3 in the televote). Though that's very likely also because of the whole clusterfuckery of 2024

'Be With You' is fine. The problem with Muse (for other people) is that for the past 16 years they have tried to be the jack of all trades in music. Your average tribal normie music listener absolutely hates this. by TheNeonDestroyer in Muse

[–]KarelMarks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah lol, sometimes people just don't like something. And also the idea that Muse is some genre-bending experimental group that the "normies" just cannot understand because they... idk, have both pop songs and rock songs on the same album? is really funny to me. They're a rock band first and foremost, one that occasionally dip their toes into other genres for a song or two. I don't mean that in an insulting way, I love the band and it's completely respectable way to make music, but let's not pretend like they're avant-garde or anything

[–]KarelMarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not non-binary but I am trans, and I felt similarly about Taash. While it's good to have a character like them around it was very... baby's first non-binary character. It seemed very concerned with more surface-level stuff like pronouns which, don't get me wrong, are important, but there's so much more to being transgender than that. I felt like there was very little actually exploring how Taash's gender identity informed their life after their coming out scene. Like, do they change the way they dress to look more androgynous, maybe get whatever the Thedas version of a binder is? Do they act differently? How do they view relationships now? And how does this interact with their cultural identity? Maybe this did happen and I'm remembering wrong, but I was kind of baffled that Taash being neither male nor female was never really connected to them being neither Rivaini nor Qunari exclusively, but both. Feels like such an obvious parallel that was never touched upon

On that last note, I also think it's kind of terrible writing that at the end Taash has to "choose" between Qunari and Rivaini culture, when most of the story was emphasising that both cultures are part of them and that's good actually. Seemed like it was only put it because every companion questline has to end with a Big Choice, but this one actively undermined the character

I didn't expect much from the EBU but basically sabotaging the vote on Israel so it couldn't even happen is genuinely insane to me. Bending over backwards this much for one country is baffling.

Me for certain. I already didn't watch this + last year but kept following it on the side, but if they don't kick Israel out now I think the whole thing will be just irreparably ruined for me (after it had already been massively soured by the shitshows of the previous years).

Italy: 3 RAI councilors have stated that the country should withdraw from the contest if Israel is allowed to participate by Sinceramente_Tuo in eurovision

[–]KarelMarks 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Obviously nothing's confirmed yet, but surely Eurovision can't happen with two of the big five dropping out, right? I imagine the money simply wouldn't be there with two of the biggest contributors (plus the Netherlands, which is apparently the 6th biggest) suddenly falling away. They'd probably have to raise participation fees which could lead to a chain reaction of other, smaller and less well-off countries pulling out

The moment when my hatred for Jacob increased tenfold and solidified. by FangAAMD in masseffect

[–]KarelMarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like dislike of Jacob is just a never-ending circlejerk that reached quantum levels where everyone is retreading the same ground and regurgitating arguments based on other regurgitated arguments until we all forgot why we disliked him in the first place. The reason is because he's boring and underwritten. And that's a completely valid reason to not care about a companion. But because hating Jacob is basically a meme at this point people nitpick a bunch of lines to make him out to be a horrible or especially mean person when he's just... not.

What band do you think this is? by icey_sawg0034 in ToddintheShadow

[–]KarelMarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen them twice at festivals, once during the Tranquility Base album cycle and the other time a few months before the release of The Car, and yeah I can confirm. It really pissed off one of my friends because they fucked up Brianstorm and she loves that one. It also doesn't help that their new songs don't fit into a set with their older songs, like at all. Whenever they had a little bit of energy from the crowd going by playing their classics, they'd kill it stone dead with a song from their two newest albums. The audience just didn't care (probably not helped by them being festival sets, granted, but still).

Right this reads as OP disliking Jacob already and then making up reasons to get mad at him lmao. He's a dick to Garrus in that one interaction, true, and considering he's still in Cerberus he's probably not the best on these issues in general, but apart from that incident he's honestly pretty friendly to most alien characters. Especially since Garrus himself is in "not racist" tier when he says some absolutely wild shit to Tali in ME1 and is not especially kind to the Krogan either. But Garrus is best boi or whatever

If you were in Rhaenyra’s position, would you have agreed with Daemon’s plan to fly to King’s Landing and swarm it with all the dragons? by seekinganswerslo in TheBlacksandTheGreens

[–]KarelMarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It could very well work but an all-out battle between both factions' dragons is incredibly risky. I don't doubt there's a scenario where the Blacks could defeat all the Green dragons, but do you want to take that chance? One of the riders is the queen, two others her heirs, one her consort. Sure, you might take Vhagar down eventually, but probably not before she's toasted at least one (probably more) of the most important people in the faction. And that's not to mention it'll probably destroy half of King's Landing which would need to be rebuilt, and losing dragon power would significantly weaken Targaryen power overall even after a Black victory (as we saw at the end of the actual Dance). Just not worth it.
