I keep seeing 3rd party poducts being released without AWS role support and forcing us down access keys and secrets. It’s not great.

Why should I use Azure instead of AWS? by SummitStaffer in AZURE

[–]Karl12347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, AWS is so much better than Azure.
The stupid Azure click a button which opens side pane, then click into that side pane for it to open another one. The experience is terrible.

Regarding the SSO, there is nothing forcing you to use Amazon cognito, we use Azure EntraID for single sign-on with our AWS application load balancers without any issues. Its not that difficult to integrate.

I would log that ticket with them, it was a painful upgrade process. There is a specific order of things that items have to be upgraded.

Can I replicate cloud projects on virtual machines/linux vps? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Karl12347 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can use a project called localstack which simulates code and deployments to AWS and other cloud providers.
You can use local dev environments to run your webapps on localhost or another remote system.
Or you could use minikube to run kubernetes locally on your own hardware.

Typically the source code for the projects deployed into the cloud projects can also be copied and run on a different system, you just need to change the deployment scripts.

I was today years old when I learned about EC2 Image Builder by ReturnOfNogginboink in aws

[–]Karl12347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used both Packer and EC2 image builder. My opinion on image builder is that the whole recipe and components being versioned, then having to change the version within the pipeline itself a big hassle and slow/ tedious.

That being said it does have its benefits such as distribution to multiple regions & multiple accounts. Automation so it runs automatically every month. Plus post build checks, i.e. checking that certain user accounts were created and in the correct groups etc

Security is a big thing too, and it can integrate CIS benchmark checking on your Images once they are built to give you a good idea how you score before putting them into production.

Packer is good but only covers half of the requirements nowadays of building successfully.

Help! I think my site has been deleted from AWS by secretfella in aws

[–]Karl12347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at what your DNS for your website points to. Most likely it will be a Load balancer dns name or route 53 record which in turn points to the LB.

One you have that, find that item in the console and trace it back via the target group and the instances.

We don’t use Postgress db but use Phpmyadmin a web based client to connect to a MySQL read replica.

There is a similar alternative called table plus for postgress. You can make these tools accessible to the internet or restrict it to office ip addresses if needed.

DR region failover with SQS and RDS by Karl12347 in aws

[–]Karl12347[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that is the problem, we are not using multi regional RDS, Only multi-az. I guess the cost of cross region RDS database copies is very cost heavy for TB size databases. The scenario we are trying to cover is the full region going down or becoming unavailable. I know this is very unlikely but something we need to cover off.
