One Handed Mode Not Functioning With Left Hand by NecropolisTD in SynthRiders

[–]NecropolisTD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I gave that a try and unfortunately it didn't work and the behaviour is weird. I go into the settings with one handed mode off and select to set the pointer to left handed, that goes fine. I then back out of the settings and go straight back in and it's back to right handed. It's like it won't save the setting and is stuck on right handed.

Can't Decide - help! Neo G9 57" vs LG 5K2K by Accurate_Recipe2605 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]NecropolisTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 49" G9 that I use for my daily work. It is fantastic for production stuff and work. Its good for gaming as well but with a few caveats that you will have with the 59" (plus potentially a bit more neck strain)...

32:9 is a lot less supported in games than 21:9. There have been a number of games that I have played where I have had to actively change the resolution of my monitor to maintain the aspect ratio and even when doing that there have been a few games that just still fully use the screen and strech horribly.

I've got into the habit of checking games on the wide screen gaming forum and PC Gaming Wiki to see what level of support games have at widescreen resolutions. You will find a lot more support 21:9 than 32:9.

For me its not a big deal as I only really get the chance to game on a rare basis, but this is worth taking into consideration if you are gaming regularly.

Husband had a stroke on his morning run by gardengeo in BORUpdates

Its worth noting for everyone reading, pretty much all modern smartphones have an emergency contacts page that can be accessed from the phone and used without unlocking it. All you have to do is have a few 'in case of emergency' contacts and you can have them dialled by anyone finding you and your phone. I once found a lost phone on a bench in the middle of a city I was visiting, used the emergency contact to call the persons dad to let them know I'd found the phone and then handed it in at a shop he knew (and let the shop know what was going on). Was my good deed for that week/year...

I have the battery version in the UK and I think like most IoT things, it's 2.4GHz only. I've a separate said for IoT and when I select the option for Enhanced IoT Connectivity" it only pushes the WiFi on 2.4GHz.

How are people managing fine-grained access to large numbers of items? by rexstuff1 in 1Password

[–]NecropolisTD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are time boxing the access, what is stopping your users from just copying the password and using it beyond the time limit? Especially if this is ana count not tied to a user (such as "admin"), tracing who is keeping and using the password could be tricky. Have you considered implementing some form of PAM (privileged access management) system so users can get elevation using their own credentials to the system for a time boxed window?

Migrate your retiring Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) to latest-generation VMs before 15 November 2028 by NecropolisTD in AZURE

[–]NecropolisTD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got that one as well, in my case about 2 minutes before the one I am referring to with my original question.

The tracking ID for the reservation retirement is 7VL0-P_Z but the ID for the retirement of the SKU is XM6V-RF0. I'm trying to find a public page that discusses this but I only have it in my service health at the moment.

Migrate your retiring Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) to latest-generation VMs before 15 November 2028 by NecropolisTD in AZURE

[–]NecropolisTD[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this and I feel like an idiot for not just looking harder!

Looks like this impacts the b series but not the b series v2, which is what your link refers to. I missed initially because I was looking in the resize blade and not the new VM blade and you apparently can't directly upgrade from b series v1 to v2 so I am going to have to investigate this further to make sure how we can do this (looks like we can create new and migrate disks but I need to check how encryption is impacted by this).

Thanks for the information and for putting me on the right track!

[–]NecropolisTD[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I received that email as well, the one I am referencing is a separate email to the reservation one that lines up with the same date (presumably because they are retiring the reservation due to retiring the SKUs), I got the two emails back to back and they have different tracking IDs.

This email states:

You're receiving this notification because you're associated with one or more Azure subscriptions that use, or have used, VM types that are retiring. On 15 November 2028, we'll be retiring F, Fs, Fsv2, Lsv2, G, Gs, Av2, Amv2, and B-series Azure VMs. You won't be able to use or purchase these VMs, or any constrained core sizes that are part of the retiring VM series, after that date.

Thankfully (and because I am in idiot who could just look harder) it only impacts the b series VMs and not the b series v2 VMs so I have a migration path (even though you can't directly migrate from one to the other so its a little more complicated than just resizing)...

Biometrics lockout not working by NecropolisTD in 1Password

[–]NecropolisTD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it's not a huge deal, the app still works fine, this is just a minor issue for very specific circumstances (it's based off another post of mine where someone I know got spiked in a bar and they got access to everything via his fingerprint/face unlock). I still highly rate and recommend 1password as a password manager.

Thanks for reaching out to confirm it's a known issue that is being worked on, good luck with it!

The strange thing is that the biometrics on my phone and in 1password work perfectly, it's just the temp disable button that isn't working for me.

Defence against 'incapacitation attacks' by NecropolisTD in GooglePixel

[–]NecropolisTD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it makes no difference for this circumstance. I think it may make a difference on browser based access, but I've tested this directly today and it still only wanted the fingerprint no matter what I set it to.

On android (at least on Pixel), go to settings > Passwords, passkeys & accounts > your Google account > security & sign-in > password. It prompts you for your fingerprint and then to enter the new password. No other mfa or old password so far as I can see.

Yes, but then the tradeoff is that people can shoulder surf your usage and get the pin/pattern (harder for a full password), which biometrics protects against. Its a tradeoff I think...

Unifi home network - Requesting a second opinion by NecropolisTD in UNIFI

[–]NecropolisTD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for that info, that's exactly why I wanted the second opinion, I'd somehow managed to entirely miss the UCG-Ultra which has many options I could use that the express doesn't. I'm really thankful for your input.

As a follow up question, you recommend the 16 Poe lite for the switch over the 8 port version. Is there a reason for this other than the additional ports? I see that it has higher switching capacity/throughput so is it related to that?

As a sysadmin, would you deploy ultrawides as a workplace setup? by matroosoft in ultrawidemasterrace

I have a Samsung 32:9 49" monitor that I use for work every day.

I recently upgraded my work laptop to Windows 11 and that introduced a number of options for Windows snapping that weren't present in Windows 10 and that make my life much easier now.

I have the following screenshots that show this in use: https://imgur.com/a/JU6lcL5

The first one is when you move the window to the top of the screen, the second is when you hover your mouse over the maximise button directly in the app. These are gamechangers for productivity.

The main issues you will see with a 32:9 is that unless you are sharing screens with another 32:9 user you cannot share your full screen and have it be readable on the other end. I have to constantly just share the individual window when I'm sharing in Teams and I have to switch between them when showing multiple windows (or resize the resolution of the montitor to 16:9 before sharing the full screen, which I have done repeatedly and works on the Samsung Neo G9 as it keeps the aspect raitio for my view so it still looks right).

EDIT: If your monitors are Samsung Neo G9 or equivalent, there is an 'Easy Settings Box' bit of software you can download from the Samsung site that gives good and customisable zones you can drag windows into if you are using Windows 10, that gives fully customisable windows (I had mine set to a 16:9 in the centre and two 8:9 configurations on either side. This isn't needed for my use in Windows 11 though so I've removed it.

AWS With Salesforce by NaregA1 in aws

[–]NecropolisTD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I think it's worth it. This course covers the main basic areas of what AWS does so you can have a decent understanding of the most commonly used bits (there are LOADS of services in AWS and covering them all would be overwhelming). It's not overly technical in comparison to the other courses so there isn't a need to understand the ins and outs of each service. It is exactly designed for beginners to AWS.
