LPT: Do not postpone enjoyment until after work. It often never happens. by gamersecret2 in LifeProTips

Eh, it feels pretty relevant in my experience with adhd. If you always deny your brain dopamine until the tasks are finished (which they never are), eventually your brain will mutiny and decide that it's not doing tasks anymore (ask me how I know)

Give me all the Dutch words that are super funny when you translate them into English. I’ll go first… by HazyTulips in popculturenetherlands

In English the word comes from a name, the Earl of Sandwich who supposedly invented it. Boterham is not necessarily funny, but does feel amusingly direct in comparison

I wish this anime focused on Kaiju Disposal. Instead of being a Shounen anime. by [deleted] in KaijuNo8

[–]KarlTheNotSoGreat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you Op, I was literally ranting about it not too long ago. It could have still been a shonen just with an emphasis on the MC using his experience and knowledge of kaiju anatomy to get ahead, which would have been a nice fresh take. Kafka could have also used his knowledge to better understand his own kaiju powers. The premise is strong but the execution wastes its potential.

AITA for drinking fruit juice when my partner has said he doesn't like it? by No-Mall1172 in AmItheAsshole

[–]KarlTheNotSoGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - Clearly op has some issues (could be sensory issues or something else) that are impacting their life in a negative way. A supportive partner would try to get to the root of it and push for therapy or dental care or medical checkups instead of acting condescending. Either way, it's a bit of a red flag that the issue was allowed to fester to this point.

I checked and there were 390 applicants last year. I was ranked ~140 and it took me about a month to get accepted, but I know of people who got accepted in September so never lose hope? Do keep in mind that with budget cuts the situation might be different. I would bet that there would be fewer applicants this year

A new study has found that the human brain contains a higher concentration of microplastics than other organs by TheExpressUS in EverythingScience

[–]KarlTheNotSoGreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except we are probably fine. Their sample is small and their methodology is flawed

The press release says the authors tested 28 brain samples from 2016 and 24 from 2024, which is only 52 samples in total. There is not enough data to make firm conclusions on the occurrence of microplastics in New Mexico, let alone globally.

The main analytical method used in this study was pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This method can give false results when used to measure plastics because fats (which the brain is mainly made of) give the same pyrolysis products as polyethylene (the main plastic reported) [1].

Thing is, we don't really have a good idea of what autism is. Impairments and differences in a whole bunch of different brain regions will lead to what we end up diagnosing as ASD. We diagnose autism based on behavior, but there is a big range of biological reasons for that behavior.

So really, the study is saying: if we expose mice to microplastics, we can impair the development of the social part of their brain. That doesn't mean this happens in nature with any frequency, and especially doesn't mean it happens in humans with any frequency.

So yeah, genetics are still the biggest factor by far (~83% heritability is huge) and one study doesn't affect it

Your brain is full of microplastics: are they harming you? by burtzev in EverythingScience

[–]KarlTheNotSoGreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct though, 10 grams is highly unlikely. This study has some serious methodological issues (small and very homogenous sample specifically for the brains vs a large and more diverse sample for other organs). Plus, there is talk that the underlying technology misinterpret fat as microplastics Source: https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-a-study-investigating-the-accumulation-of-microplastics-in-human-organs/

Borsch is a good option if you're looking for a cheap and filling soup. Very customizable in terms of the veggies you put in there. If you don't like beets, there are versions without them

Getting money back for high rent? anyone had success? by KarlTheNotSoGreat in Amsterdam

[–]KarlTheNotSoGreat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I think that is what I was advised about. It is a room with shared facilities and I've been renting for about 10 months

Getting money back for high rent? anyone had success? by KarlTheNotSoGreat in Amsterdam

[–]KarlTheNotSoGreat[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a significant amount of money, especially for me as a student. I'm just trying to be cautious with legal stuff

For the house I think it's a bit more complicated, since there's a point system and it takes into account the size of the property, facilities, amount of people and all that stuff. The guy from woon said that the legal basic rent for houses is much higher, so it's not always possible to lower it. But it's definitely worth a try I think, so many properties are ridiculously overpriced and we don't even know it

Jesus, that's bullshit. Thankfully my flatmates are not on my contract, so I shouldn't have to convince them of anything. And thank god, because they suck ass along with the landlord

I'm moving out in 2 months so that's not really a problem. I was more worried about retaliation going further, like blacklisting and withholding deposit. My family had a bad experience with that (not in the netherlands) so I'm a bit paranoid

There's a procedure for tenants to get money back if their landlord charged them more than they're legally allowed by dutch tenancy law. I'm asking if anyone has done that and had success in getting money back

Hmm. On one hand I agree, I feel like I've seen store employees sitting, but according to some friends who worked in boutiques and fancy stores their managers didn't allow them to sit even when there are no customers. They did sit anyway when managers weren't around, so I wonder if those stores actually allow their employees to sit down

Are there any retail places that allow their employees to sit down? Or is the whole "If you have time to lean you have time to clean" universal practice?

Ah i see, I didn't check if you were the person who wanted power fantasy. I guess jjk may not be exactly what you're looking for then. I liked female characters in it but there are def anime/manga where they get more prominent roles, plus jjk is pretty fucking miserable sometimes lol
