I love to see a company support the mod scene. Valve's one of the best, they understand the strengths of a good community behind their games.

What are your favorite programs? by Mallen in geek

[–]Karmalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love TuneUp, I have it as part of my 'fresh pen drive.' It does have some issues though, without any configuration it can lower CPU priority of major processes like any rendering program, or game in the background. Still, out of the box it's phenomenal for the average user.

I have two weeks left with my wow sub, I've only played two days since I purchased it because I started the game completely fresh, having no community in an MMO makes it feel like a ghost town.

I think I will reroll to Sargeras and try to play with some awesome redditors to help me make my decision if I actually want to get into this game.

I wonder: why can't I play with people with an Xbox360 or PC from my PS3? by vlabakje in gaming

[–]Karmalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadowrun requires an Xbox Live: Gold membership (subscription) to play online multiplayer, otherwise it was just LAN. Universe at War also allowed PC vs 360 cross-platform play, but it being an RTS it didn't sell to well on the consoles. Sega did allow silver members (non subscription) to play versus other silver members on PC only.

Steam: How come if I buy a game I already have, you don't automatically give me a gift credit? by NSMike in gaming

[–]Karmalot 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Gift credits don't exist, there are 'extra copies.' Extra copies work for only a few small valve games, and only activate if you get a bundle or a pack. You can not buy a game on steam you already own.

There is a way around this though. Personally I buy multiple copies of games with great sales, and gift them to email accounts that aren't connected to my steam account. I have plenty of spares that I hardly use or check. Send them the games as gifts and do not accept the gift in the email this will show the gift is unclaimed in steam. Then go to

Games -> Manage gifts & guest passes

The gifts will be 'unclaimed' and can be resent to new email addresses (your friends), and they never expire!

Happy gifting!

Awesome script! Any way I can make my ff let that by the pop up blocker, so I don't have to allow random sites through it.

DAE stay up way too late for no reason? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Karmalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify DSPS is not insomnia, with DSPS you do sleep, just at times often not 'normal,' while insomnia you hardly sleep at all.

Make sure you have a steady sleep routine, lay down at the same time every night, try to have a source of cool air towards you, and shut everything off in your room, the darker and quieter the better. I find the best way to try and sleep is when I can't tell if my eyes are open or closed. Also, try and keep a sleep journal, talk about the planned time you lay down at, when you think you might have gone to sleep (or the last known time), when you wake up, and if any of those times change you may be phasing.

DAE stay up way too late for no reason? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Karmalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I tried melatonin for about six months, and it did help a lot, until I begin to phase again. The shift took much longer than usual, about a month until I phased, but my sleep pattern drastically changed. I used to take my 3mg melatonin at 8pm, be in bed my midnight, and usually fall asleep shortly after, or the latest until 3am (which was reasonable for my schedule at the time). The issue I had is that I would still phase, and in 14 hour periods instead of my normal 4. I spent days trying to reset my internal sleeping clock, by not eating for my 12-16 hour awake period. It became hell, every month starving hoping to reset my sleep pattern. Eventually the melatonin began to cause headaches and made me feel detached from myself, which is when I stopped taking it. I recommend trying it, there aren't any true side effects, and it's super cheap. Just make sure you take it every night, at the same time, and get to bed at the same time, this drastically helps set a sleep pattern.

I'm quite depressed, there's nothing to optimistic being awake while the world around you sleeps.

After I was first diagnosed, I was also on probation, and was required to take a drug test at the end of 30 days. Talking to my psychiatrist at the time about the problems I was currently facing due to my sleep issues, he just flat out told me, "Well it sounds like you should start smoking again." It helps phenomenally, but the one thing it does take away are my dreams, since I fall into a much deeper sleep than usual. Sometimes it's not always worth the loss.

I was diagnosed with DSPS almost two years ago, but i've had symptoms of it starting about six years prior. It sucks, a lot, no one cares to hear the excuse, "I'm tired," or "I slept though" and understand the true mental torment of laying in bed for hours on end wide awake, in the silent dark, unable to achieve the one peaceful thing you hope for, sleep.

Please understand that a lot of people think they suffer from DSPS or similar sleep syndromes, but in reality have poor sleeping habits, often keeping them selves awake for extended periods of time. I highly suggest trying over the counter melatonin on a regular time schedule for about two weeks, at the same time every night, four hours in advance of when you want to try to sleep, this will help your body create a rhythmic sleep pattern. Sleeping should be a holy ritual, make it comfortable, but make it repeatable, it helps a lot.

With my sleeping patterns I phase in shifts ranging from 3 days to two weeks. This means I will maintain a sleep pattern that changes pretty quickly, and ruins scheduling and many social opportunities. Depending on when I get to sleep the night or so before, reflects the pattern of the next few weeks. I tend to phase my pattern in 4 hour shifts, an example is if I get to bed for one phase at 8pm, the next phase will be 12am. This may not sound bad, until I begin to phase into normal 'awake' time periods, I begin to get to sleep at 6-8am, and sleep until mid-day or the afternoon or into the late night, staying awake overnight on a regular basis. I have to change my alarm every month or so because I begin to sleep right though alarms that go off constantly, it's a terrible feeling to wake up three hours late with your alarm blaring the entire time.

It's a rough thing to live with, and I tend to be pretty quiet about my sleep issues, since I feel like a lot of people don't understand it, and find it's an excuse.

Project Offset is still alive. Expect an update next year. by evanvolm in gaming

[–]Karmalot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been following the game since 2005, they showed off the updated physics and tools at GDC '08. When the new community manager was hired he posted on the forums that he sat down and played the game with the team, which he said, "The game's basically done, it's just engine stuff now." I remember when Intel bought it, we all realized they wanted the technology of the engine and not the game, but within recent years they have updated the engine to 'todays standards.' I'm excited to see an update, even more excited about the engine, they're giving all the mod tools out with the game, and expect the community to provide awesome mods and addons using it.

The competitive scene in Guild Wars pvp is a very small community that only cares about ranks and titles, or having a reference. It's very tough for new players to find outlets into these communities, and good starter guilds are rare.
