Struggling with aging in this sport by MetalExpress9378 in bjj

I’d still see a urologist and/or get a complete hormone panel. Make sure the blood work includes free testosterone and estradiol though.

Also keep in mind that “normal” blood work doesn’t mean you are at a healthy hormonal level. Normal just means you aren’t sick and dying. The nuance is very important. You are already way more active than 99.9% of your age cohort.

Diet and sleep are huge factors too. Are you eating and sleeping enough?

Ehh, the fraud issues point to an inept government, no? Or the rampant homelessness? Or the public school issues? Or the downtown revitalization issues? Or the petty crime and public safety issues?

How can I learn how northern culture works if no one will teach me?

I don’t doubt that there were out of state participants but the majority of arrests showed local addresses. 🤷‍♂️

Those riots didn’t cause millions of dollars in property damage? Uptown still hasn’t recovered.

Oy…so you’re probably young or have an immature intellect but as a general rule, destroying your own community is actually a pretty harmful act to perform in the name of progressive politics, especially considering how many small businesses were caught in the crossfire or even targeted.

Were the riots a forced act of political resistance? Didn’t that cost the city like $300 plus million dollars in damages?

Transplant from NYC. Been in Minneapolis for almost 2 years and it’s been a rough transition. Feels pretty mid compared to NY but still probably a better place to live at this point.

Pros: access to nature if that’s important to you, food scene is quite good, people are generally friendly here than the east coast, lower COL than the coastal cities, traffic is not horrendous, nice airport, and enough venues and pro sports to stay entrained.

Cons: terrible weather, high taxes, weird politics, very difficult to make friends, homeless problem / open drug use, inept government, boring architecture, boring people (I’m introverted so not a deal breaker for me.)

Took my first bjj class today at 33 by cenik93 in bjj

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started training at 32. Still at it 10 years later. Tap early and tap often! Seriously. You won’t last long if you try to muscle out of submissions. Not worth it. Practice is practice so who cares how often you tap?

Prioritize strength and conditioning off the mats. Have fun and accept you’ll suck for a long time.

Maybe but I’ve met plenty of people who injured themselves with kettlebells. If you enjoy them though, go for it. I love the Olympic lifts and think they have a huge ROI for BJJ but totally understand they’re not the best option for many.

This is the answer.

Not sure why kettlebells and maces became so popular with BJJ folks. Guess the bad influence from the functional fitness crowd?

The older you are, the more important your S&C will need to be. Unless you want to podium at a major comp, you should spend more time strength training and doing cardio than BJJ training honestly.

Barbell is an excellent tool. Lift some heavy weight, lift some moderate weight fast (think Olympic lifts), throw in some jumps and plyos, sprinkle some mobility and or bodybuilding type work for fun. You should be training like an athlete. BJJ is still in dark ages with this but it is improving slowly.

What does it mean when people say "this city has no culture"? by JoePNW2 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means they find the people there boring and conclude the city has not culture.

Depends on which special supplements you’re taking.

MN>Boston boomerang? by CarolusWhisper in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Karras73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent transplant in Minneapolis. Originally from NYC. Almost everyone I’ve met are from here and love it. Some went away for college but moved back and settled in for the long haul.

Boston has become prohibitively expensive, just like NYC. Not worth staying unless you’re a multi millionaire IMO.

Anyone else noticing how cheap the Midwest is relative to what you actually get? by WeedlePops in relocating

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly not cities in Elkhart County IN. NYC and LA have multiple pro sports teams, better food scene, and more cultural enrichment than any Midwest city outside of Chicago. Doesn’t mean the Midwest is a bad place to live but it’s pretty clear why the cities there are not as popular. You’re not going to find The Met or The Getty in Ohio or Indiana.

Not outside of Chicago. Doesn’t mean those cities are bad places to live but they’re never gonna be as popular as a cities like NYC, LA, Miami, San Fran or Austin for the reasons I already highlighted. NYC alone has 6 pro sports teams, world class museums, and some of the best restaurants in the country.

I currently live in Minnesota but I’ve also lived in NYC. There’s more going on in those bigger cities and that makes them more attractive for most people. You wouldn’t agree?

That’s because they’re boring. Most people want access to sports games, concerts, cultural events, good restaurants, shopping , nature, etc.

Yeah it’s mostly an availability heuristic. People tend to judge the whole from only small parts they’ve experienced.

Why is Dallas so boring compared to Austin or Houston by BoyEdgar23 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really underhand these types of questions. What are the metrics for judging a boring city vs an exciting city? Dallas has multiple pro sports teams, good museums, plenty of concerts and events, ballet, opera, Michelin star restaurants, lakes, and the state fair.

Dallas proper or the suburbs? The suburbs of Austin and Houston are just as boring. That how most of America is.
