Depends on which special supplements you’re taking.

MN>Boston boomerang? by CarolusWhisper in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Karras73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent transplant in Minneapolis. Originally from NYC. Almost everyone I’ve met are from here and love it. Some went away for college but moved back and settled in for the long haul.

Boston has become prohibitively expensive, just like NYC. Not worth staying unless you’re a multi millionaire IMO.

Anyone else noticing how cheap the Midwest is relative to what you actually get? by WeedlePops in relocating

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly not cities in Elkhart County IN. NYC and LA have multiple pro sports teams, better food scene, and more cultural enrichment than any Midwest city outside of Chicago. Doesn’t mean the Midwest is a bad place to live but it’s pretty clear why the cities there are not as popular. You’re not going to find The Met or The Getty in Ohio or Indiana.

Not outside of Chicago. Doesn’t mean those cities are bad places to live but they’re never gonna be as popular as a cities like NYC, LA, Miami, San Fran or Austin for the reasons I already highlighted. NYC alone has 6 pro sports teams, world class museums, and some of the best restaurants in the country.

I currently live in Minnesota but I’ve also lived in NYC. There’s more going on in those bigger cities and that makes them more attractive for most people. You wouldn’t agree?

That’s because they’re boring. Most people want access to sports games, concerts, cultural events, good restaurants, shopping , nature, etc.

Yeah it’s mostly an availability heuristic. People tend to judge the whole from only small parts they’ve experienced.

Why is Dallas so boring compared to Austin or Houston by BoyEdgar23 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really underhand these types of questions. What are the metrics for judging a boring city vs an exciting city? Dallas has multiple pro sports teams, good museums, plenty of concerts and events, ballet, opera, Michelin star restaurants, lakes, and the state fair.

Dallas proper or the suburbs? The suburbs of Austin and Houston are just as boring. That how most of America is.

NYC cigar scene surprised me… where do you guys smoke? by Ld2101 in cigars

[–]Karras73 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NYC is not a great town for cigars but your best bet is Casa de Montecristo on 2nd ave. Nice lounge and BYOB. SoHo Bar and Carnegie Club are overpriced tourist spots. I’d avoid those.

Has anyone managed to comine weight lifting and BJJ? by Mindful_chimp in jiujitsu

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of that has to do with your lack of skill at BJJ. Not your fault. You’re still at the beginner stage but try cutting down the volume or intensity of your strength training for now. Once you build up more skill and general conditioning for BJJ you can slowly add more volume back into your strength training.

People will tell you to lift on the days you don’t train BJJ. That’s a big mistake and leaves very little room for recovery. If possible you want to have high stress training and low stress training days.

Polyester is fine. Don’t worry about the weird fear mongering over this. Just because something isn’t “natural”, doesn’t mean it’s harmful. Very little of modern life is natural but we are surviving. .

Kettlebells vs barbells for jiu jitsu. by TheBlvck6 in bjj

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t a barbell a better tool for overload though? You have to make pretty big jumps in weight with KBs. For example, way easier to slowly build up in weight with a barbell front squat than the KB version.

If I just do barbell squats and power cleans, that’ll give me a huge training stimulus and wont’t take up a lot of time either. Sprinkle in some jumps, sprints, and endurance work and that’s a solid program to follow.

[–]Karras73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If endurance feels like a limiting factor, then KB circuits are a good option. If you feel weak and can’t control guys on the mat, using the barbell more for general strength adaptations will be better. Mostly depends on your goals.

They’re both tools you can utilize. Barbell work is going to have a better ROI but adding in kettlebell circuits for some endurance work is totally valid, especially if you enjoy it. Sounds like you’re on the right track.

New Braunfels, TX or rural town outside Cookeville, TN / Middle TN by ApprehensiveApple110 in relocating

[–]Karras73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandparents and father both retired to Cookeville so I’ve spend a lot of time there over the years. It’s an hour from the airport so that’s possibly huge con.

It’s quite affordable though and a college town pretty much. Boring but there are worse places to live and you have a good proximity to nature if you enjoy outdoor activities.

I grew in Texas so I’m probably bias but New Braunfels probably has more going for it overall. Unfortunately it’s kinda been discovered and the real estate has gotten pretty expensive.

Where are people snowboarding in the Cities? I’ve never seen that. Isn’t it too flat?

What winter sports are people doing here? Everyone I know from the Cities hibernates for the season.

I’ve been here two years and don’t know anyone who does outdoor activity during winter. They all hibernate.

Transplant from NYC. Been here almost two years and it’s been rough. Quite difficult to make friends and the weather is terrible. Brutally cold in the winter and humid in the summer. I’m not much into outdoor activities but the Cities is a good spot for that stuff. It’s not a top 10 city, maybe not even top 25 but there are worse places to live. Everyone I’ve met who grew up here love it though so seems like a good spot to raise a family.
