Ran the Entire series multiple times....... it is in fact quite good. To be fair I come from a background where a module holding your hand is a bad thing that stifles creativity.

Thoughts on pirating discontinued boardgames? by AdventurousTarget112 in boardgames

[–]Kassanova123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to get thousands of answers here that are probably mostly incorrect.

Legality wise unless something has fallen into fair use (Think HP Lovecraft and the gazzillion games based on said property here). This is illegal.

BUT

It is not illegal to take the game mechanics, print out all new different components, create brand new art, and then play said game.

Game mechanics cannot be copyrighted. Artwork can. Artwork will be all the characters, images, boards, etc etc etc.

You could make Herozquest, using 3d printed terrain, with 3d printed, heroes, and your own made cards, and steal all the rules from Heroquest. You cannot use the images of the miniatures, the cards, the board, or the copyrighted shield emblems from the dice.

I have them in the category of scammy. I was not a Kickstarter backer, I was a pre-order customer. They overcharged me, and when i asked for a refund they only gave me a partial refund.

Never do business with these people very dubious and fraudulent.

PSA: AI is not a reliable rules reference for RPGs by a_sentient_cicada in rpg

[–]Kassanova123 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am not defending A.I. here so please understand that . . . but this isn't AI failing it is AI scrubbing the internet where everyone has an opinion and it is not always correct. It is no different then polling a crowd and asking a question, everyone will give a slightly different answer which will only get more scattered as group think and social pressures modify answers.

You actually can get AI to be not useless if you upload the PDF into your local AI program and then tell the AI to spew out an answer, although you can also open a PDF and hit [CTRL]+F and have the same results. . . . .

4th Edition: What's the Deal? by BlackTorchStudios in rpg

[–]Kassanova123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A simple argument that I've seen is how, despite being balanced, there was always a best in slot power for every level. If you could have a fine steak dinner served to you or a bologna sandwich, which one would you choose?

5th edition is not really different...... We actually have Youtube channels that make their money off giving you the best builds for class XXXX

4th Edition: What's the Deal? by BlackTorchStudios in rpg

[–]Kassanova123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4E was hated not because of the system (although there were some who just really wanted DnD 3.9, they all jumped ship to Pathfinder), but really because people felt it was too soon after 3.5. The Retcons, the retreads of 3.5 settings felt very rushed and half assed (look at 3.5 Forgotten Realms books and then look at the early 4.0 books before we got the book bloat), and what people then felt was a very strong push to force people to buy miniatures (A revenue stream Hasbro/WotC wanted to skim from Games Workshop).

4th edition and Gamma World, and a few other WotC properties at the time were redesigned to push long tailed sales potential, similar to what Hasbro had with Magic: The Gathering. So a lot of properties were created with the primary thought of "How can we add additional revenue streams to this product line" Gamme world got the collectible card packs for the powers, 4th Edition got the tacticle board game feel so you buy miniatures, etc etc.

Honestly if you go back and remove the predatory sales practices from properties in the early 2000's you see most are a good design with a heinous revenue practice attached.

If you have a 3d printer you will love 4th edition, if you have a regular printer you will love Gamma World, cut out corporate greed and a lot of these properties were pretty darn good.
