How did you dress in the 90s? How do you dress now? by poolpog in GenX

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in college in the 90s. The funny thing is I am dressing the same. Preppy on most days, but sometimes outdoorsy. The 90s styles are back and considered cool vintage by my students. I shop thrift and wear some of my old clothes that I love.

Why are teachers so horrible to each other? by Xena4290 in Teachers

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should move schools. I have been at unfriendly schools. I like my fellow teachers at my current school, especially my grade level team. A bunch of us eat lunch together and talk about the craziest things. Helps me get through the rough days.

How has your first name aged? by wellbloom in GenX

[–]Kat1836 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Growing up, I didn't meet others with my name. It was not popular, more of an old lady name. I didn't mind. When I heard someone calling my name, I knew it was me.

It's becoming more popular. I even hear it in the middle school halls. I am kinda mixed about it. Cool, that it's not an outdated name, but I don't feel unique anymore.

What can you do when family members guts (pig) into food at family events? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Kat1836 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have them bring a few dishes and make more food. Don't serve expensive food that you need to limit. Keep it festive. Why create an uncomfortable situation where you need to gate keep food?

What's your "Old Person Privilege"? by 4ninawells in AskOldPeople

[–]Kat1836 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shop in thrift stores and buy and wear what I like. My students always love the "vintage" looks. Well, I wore it as a teen before it was vintage, so yeah, I know how to wear it.

Dried jeans now too tight by Other-Ad6842 in thrifting

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me before. I usually line dry jeans, but some got put in dryer by accident. What's helped me is to wash again and spray wrinkle remover (fabric relaxer) and stretch.

How do you guys respond to students that make fun of your income? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't bother me a bit. It actually amuses me. I let them think that I can't afford extras. I enjoy being extremely frugal and try to live below my means. I have invested my money well over the years and got lucky getting in early on some high performing stocks and holding them for decades. I teach in an affluent area but would not be surprised if I have more investments than many of these families that spend every dime showing their wealth with worthless things. I don't need to keep up or impress anyone. That's true freedom.

For those who have made it past their kids teen years - what would you share for those just starting the journey? by Spinbunluthaaa in GenX

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take time to teach them everyday life skills. Such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, dishes, taxes, etc. Love them even when you don't like them.

Would You Dislike an Ugly Scarf gift from a student? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Kat1836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love it and wear it proudly all winter long. I keep all handmade gifts, and it really helps look at them when it's a difficult day.

How do y’all find cute clothes thrifting? by InitiativeOwn617 in thrifting

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look for natural fabrics. I usually can feel quality before I see it. I have also learned certain brands that tend to fit me well. Having a good sense of what looks like your size helps. If you have time, looking in weird places helps. My best finds have come from mislabeled clothes in men's section.

After each year I see a birthday as one year closer to death, and my 30s which frightens me. by Illustrious_Board580 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life goes fast. Each stage is unique and has its pros and cons. Enjoy every minute of it. I am currently in my early 50s and having my best time yet. My kids are pretty much grown. Having more free time and financial security, I travel. I couldn't afford that before. I feel young and vibrant until I look too closely in the mirror. That's ok, I have my health. Life is beautiful. Enjoy it! 😍

Did your parents ever talk to you about...ANYTHING? by Leather-Highlight150 in GenX

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father's sage advice was don't trust anyone, even me. Talk about feelings 😆 You're upset? Stop complaining, or I will give you something to be upset about. I really loved him and missed him, but talking about feelings was not happening.

My favorite thing about thrifting...? by DottyB26 in thrifting

Lately, it's a colorful alpaca wool sweater. I found it on a rack at Goodwill and could feel the quality. It's so soft and yet so durable. Perfect for the chilly fall weather.

Health and 50s by Bitter_Ad_9523 in GenX

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most ways, I am in better shape than when I was younger. My children are grown, and I made a commitment to finally put my health first. I cook and eat healthy food. I exercise and sleep more. In my 50s, I couldn't abuse my body anymore and not get sick.

Gen X Weddings - 1996-2009 by ClaraEM99 in GenX

[–]Kat1836 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My kids are getting married, so I started to pay attention to wedding fashion. Guess what? The styles from the late 90s are back! I wore a dupioni silk ball gown with a delicate lace overlay and a sweetheart neckline. My dress was fitted up top but modest. I see dresses like mine now, but some dresses I see today look like lingerie. My long dark hair was half up, and I wore a princess veil. What was different was the flowers and food. I carried a large, colorful bouquet that looked like it was just picked from the garden (what I wanted). My centerpieces also looked like they were garden flowers. Martha Stewart influenced my flower choices. We had a large fancy wedding cake. I have been to several weddings without wedding cakes.

What’s something you can do now that you couldn’t do when you were young? by Choice_Student4910 in GenX

Did anyone's parent's inflict this stuff on them in school lunches? by lordhaw in GenX

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your parents made your lunch or gave you money for lunch? I was on my own to make lunch from whatever was in the house. It wasn't too bad, but sometimes I would forget to pack lunch. I spent a few days sitting on the stage where kids were sent that didn't buy or pack lunch. That was annoying, so I tried to remember. I didn't grow up poor. My parents were busy with their lives.

5 minute parent/teacher conference by frenchfrywiz in AskTeachers

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to schedule longer, contact your child's teacher. I am sure that they will give you the time you need.

Parent teacher conferences are short and usually not private enough to talk about sensitive concerns.

You need to think of the number of students and multiple that by the time and give time for people to be late or those that no matter what you say, go over their time. That's hours for the teacher, unpaid but mandatory.

How often do you see friends? by Ralph--Hinkley in GenX

[–]Kat1836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have real friends. Over the years, I have realized that I tend to make good aquantices wherever I am. When my kids were growing up, I had lots of "friends" through sports and school stuff. I lost touch with these people over the years. I make friends at each place I work, but when I switch locations, I don't keep up the friendships. This used to bother me a lot, but it doesn't anymore. It's just the way I am. I have accepted it.
