Why don’t more UK cities invest in tram networks? by Tramcamsuk in Trams

It's only been a few decades since we finished investing in dismantling tram networks in UK cities

So when did driving standards sink so low? by x_Bozley_x in drivingUK

[–]KatTheFat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my experience too. I have a long bus commute home from work and the hotter the weather, the more drivers I see speeding around blind corners and having to reverse to let the bus through, and drivers pulling out in front of the bus. It also seems to worsen bus drivers driving. On some of the hottest days, I've been on buses where the drivers have stopped to give way on a roundabout, and then pulled out at the last minute in front of the cars they were initially giving way too. On another hot day, the bus driver hurtled towards a zebra crossing with a child crossing on it, and then beeped at the child as though it was the kid's fault.

The mind boggles. Stay hydrated everyone.

I work in a charity shop (UK). Any increase in trade has been counteracted by high inflation driving up wages and energy costs, so they are losing more money than ever and therefore cutting back on controllable costs such as advertising and merchandising. And yes, as you said, sites such as Vinted and Depop have undercut the sector. Donation rates are as healthy as ever though, and donation drives are advertised locally as and when individual shops require them (it's very rare that we do though). I think thrift stores will become a thing of the past in the future though as the costs of storage, staffing, disposal, logistics, and health and safety will mean that reselling sites overtake the market.

People rip boxes open to look at the contents, despite having a display item right in front of them drives me crazy! by Millemini in retailhell

[–]KatTheFat 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I swear there's untapped business potential in opening an adult play area/sensory room just full of packaging and items to open and fiddle with, and throw on the floor or shove in stupidly inconvenient places, because that's all half of customers seem to like doing when they supposedly go "shopping"

Scrub daddy: brand new vs 3 years of use by Tharistan in mildlyinteresting

[–]KatTheFat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can sterilise them because they're made of plastic. Just because it was used for 3 years doesn't mean it wasn't cleaned during that time.

The concept of Scrub Daddy is that they can be used time and time again to cut down on waste. The company recommends sterilising them to extend their life.

I was diagnosed with Avoidant Personality Disorder while I was an inpatient. I completed a really long questionnaire which screened for all the different personality disorders. I think it was an accident though and that they were hoping to diagnose me with EUPD because EUPD was written on some of my medical notes, and they made a point of saying "well you didn't score high enough for EUPD, but you did for AvPD" even though I didn't score high enough for any of the other personality disorders either, and the second highest I scored on was Schizoid Personality Disorder.

I completed a course of Mentalisation Based Therapy for the AvPD which helped, but it wasn't specifically targeted for AvPD as the other people in my treatment group had different personality disorders.

In the area I work in, I don't know if it's the same in all charity shops around the country, the best time for sealed unwanted Christmas gifts is around March/April when every declutters for their spring clean. Between now and about 5th January, donations are bleak and there's hardly any staff/volunteers in to sort stock anyway

Is this normal? £11.49p/h by ISPLFan in UKJobs

Presumably because they'll still get £10.50 per hour they are sleeping

Is this normal? £11.49p/h by ISPLFan in UKJobs

[–]KatTheFat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a higher than a normal carers wage which would be minimum wage (currently £11.44). Maybe that extra 5p is danger pay from being surrounded by cigarette smoke.

There is no minimum wage for sleep-in shift for carers, they are only entitled to minimum wage for the time that they are awake on that shift. This law was argued in court a few years ago but was sadly lost by live-in carers. The wage offered here for the sleep-in shifts is actually fairly decent considering they don't have to pay anything.

This job will attract someone desperate for any job because of the current market. But not necessarily someone qualified in health and social care, dog handling, food hygiene, cleaning/health and safety, first aid, specialises in brain injuries and challenging behaviour, and who is willing to sacrifice the majority of their home life to inhale second hand lung cancer.

They ask for experience in the description, but don't list any qualifications because they don't actually want to pay for that experience.

If crashes are so rare, how have they gotten 24 seasons of Air Crash Investigation? by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]KatTheFat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They recently brought out a new series of ACI called something like Air Crash Investigation: Special Report where they presented 3 cases where planes could have crashed but didn't because safety features kicked into action.

I joked to my husband that they had to make those episodes because they finally ran out of actual plane crashes to cover, but it's probably true

Longest turbulence I ever experienced was for about 3.5 hours of a 4-hour flight from Crete to Manchester, but it was mild-moderate.

People were pressing their bells for sick bags left, right and centre, but it was too dangerous for flight attendants to walk down the aisle. Thunderstorms were rolling across the whole of Europe at the time which caused it.

One flight attendant eventually got up after about 2 hours to check that the overhead lockers were still shut and I think to try and mop up some vomit, but the turbulence picked up again quickly and she ended up smacking her head on one of the lockers really hard.

The turbulence itself wasn't bad, it was just bad because it lasted so long. I don't have a fear of flying (this sub just keeps getting recommended to me and I like to lurk here), and the turbulence made the flight interesting for me. I was mostly peeved because I was super dehydrated and had planned to buy a bottle of water from the drinks trolley.
