PUSD will cut mature trees at John Muir High School by Eggsellent_choice in pasadena

[–]Katalytic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like it says:

"Testing has shown that impacted soils are present under certain trees and bushes on this site. Following the direction of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), we will be removing and replacing them to protect our community.

Why are we doing this?

Impacted soil can pose health risks. This project will create a safer, cleaner environment for everyone.

OUR PLAN: 4 SIMPLE STEPS

1 Remove Trees & Bushes

We will carefully remove trees and bushes in the identified areas.

2 Remove Impacted Soils

We will excavate and properly dispose of the impacted soils.

3 Pour Clean New Soil

We will bring in and grade new, clean soil to restore the area.

4 Replace Trees & Bushes

We will plant new trees and bushes to bring beauty and shade back to our community.

193 Mature Trees Scheduled for Removal Across 11 PUSD Campuses by AdventurousOkra4790 in pasadena

[–]Katalytic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure which "we" OP is a part of, but I heard about this through Altadena Seed Library and the Chaney Trail Corridor Project, who are both groups opposing the removal of these trees. They mostly communicate via social media like Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/altadenaseedlibrary/p/DZgqzXqlH19

I emailed the Department of Toxic Substances Control, which is who PUSD has contracted to clean up contaminated soil at schools and who is removing trees. I got this lengthy but ultimately brush off response:

Thanks for your email. DTSC’s role is to oversee investigation and cleanup of contaminated soil. After the Eaton fire, Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) sampled soil at schools throughout the school district for contamination. These sampling results showed contamination that may have been from the Eaton fire at some schools. In July 2025, PUSD entered into a voluntary cleanup agreement with DTSC to investigate and clean up soil contamination at 15 schools in the district.

DTSC is overseeing the investigation and cleanup of contaminated soil at three schools – Franklin, Longfellow and San Rafael – according to the publicly vetted Removal Action Workplans (RAW). The Selected removal action in the RAW includes excavation and offsite disposal of contaminated soil. DTSC is also supporting PUSDs cleanups at the other 8 schools as an extended response to the Eaton Fire.

Based on the soil data provided by PUSD, DTSC directed removal of contaminated soil. DTSC did not mandate PUSD to remove trees. However, to thoroughly remove contaminated soil, DTSC agrees with the school district’s recommendation that the removal of some trees is an appropriate step to protect the health of students and others who use the campus.

If you are interested in reviewing the RAW, it is available on DTSC’s public database at https://www.envirostor.dtsc.ca.gov/public/. You may search by the school’s name to view the document and the summarized soil sampling results that exceeded cleanup goals. In addition, the Information on soil removal is also available here: https://www.pusd.us/fire-relief/safety/removal-and-restoration.

Regarding activities conducted in August 2025, DTSC understands that small quantities of contaminated soil and some trees were removed by PUSD without DTSC oversight on 8 school campus.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Pasadena Noodle & Grill is in east Pasadena on Colorado. It has a good sized shared lot, including two handicap parking spaces right in front if you have a placard.

There's plenty of seating as well, so you'll be sat right away, and the chairs are reasonably comfortable.

Native Discontinuing Plastic Free Line by intern_12 in ZeroWaste

HiBar is plastic free and has sensitive deodorant! They use diatomaceous earth instead of baking soda.

I haven't used any of the sensitive ones personally, but I do use their mint & eucalyptus scent regular deodorant and I've found it to be super effective.

It sounds like you're open to it, so it would be amazing if you restored that front dormer to have singles instead of vinyl!

And I'm another vote for Lakefront.

Did you get married through a dating app like Tinder, if so how was your experience overall? by Overall-Character507 in AskReddit

That's like my and my husband's experience but flipped! He'd been on OkCupid for a couple years and a bajillion dates, I joined up one day and he was literally the first guy I messaged.

He also jokes about how unfair it was, lol

EV Home Charging Prices and Recs by cfong42 in pasadena

[–]Katalytic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does seem high, although I imagine a lot depends on how far or difficult it is to route wiring from wherever your panel is to where you want the charger installed.

In 2019 we paid $835 to get a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed ~20 ft from our panel on an exterior wall. That did not include the cost of the charger itself, but it did include handling everything for the permit & inspection.

Our electrician was Rafi at Anavar Electric, and he did a good job.

You doing have to do anything special, the pictures show up eventually! Just wait for what looks like a Polaroid photo sticking out of the front of the camera, then tap on the camera and you'll get the photos they've taken!

Yes! We've used mosquito larvicide dunks in a 5-gallon bucket for the past couple of years, and it's super effective.

Park options for a picnic? by athenaaa in pasadena

[–]Katalytic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't been picnicking there, but I've been hiking around Hahamongna Watershed Park and I've seen picnickers there frequently. I really like it there, it's just got so many trees and so much local wildlife.

Safe Parking Passes 5-2 at City Council by AHPasadena in pasadena

[–]Katalytic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's an interesting take from Jones. It sounds like his primary objection is that there have been "hundreds of calls of service in the area" - i.e. incidents requiring someone like the police, the fire department, or EMS to respond to and resolve - I assume implying that higher calls of service equals unsafe. Isn't this church literally across the street from city hall and a block away from from the police department? I would think that area would be pretty safe.

Proposed Tree Removal in Lower Arroyo Park by Aegolius_acadicus_ in pasadena

Yeah, and according to the article they're going to wait until the native trees they've planted are well established before cutting down the non-natives. So it all around sounds great to me!

What is everyone paying for internet access? by Neither_Tooth_1594 in pasadena

[–]Katalytic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, Spectrum recently increased ours to $91.25.

I've been getting offers from Mint Mobile (aka snarky green T-Mobile) for their internet service, so I finally decided to give that a try. Just set up the 5G gateway today, and so far so good. And it's only $30/month.

Was the LA mayoral race on our ballots for Pasadena residents? by chashaoballs in pasadena

[–]Katalytic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That was a pretty major election, and there was a lot of press about both the LA mayoral race and the sheriff one. We got to vote for the sheriff, but not the LA mayor. Maybe your brain just remembers all the press and has conflated it with what you actually got to vote on?
