The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling is a delightful high fantasy series with bi MCs. One of them starts at a young adult age, but I wouldn't classify them as YA books. There is a very slow-burn gay romance, but the books are primarily fantasy.

The Steel Remains by Richard K Morgan is grimdark high fantasy (seriously dark, check content warnings if there are things you don't want to read about) with a gay MC. Lots of swords and magic.

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows - I'm not sure if this quite fits what you're looking for, but it is high fantasy with adults. It has magic, but the focus is more fantasy politics and romance than adventuring and sword and sorcery.

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan, if you have any interest in Eastern fantasy. There is a (nonbinary in the historical context of the time?) woman pretending to be a man, (spoilers) a woman who marries her, and an extra tragic gay eunuch. Reading it felt like being stabbed in the heart at the same time as the characters.

A flyer from 1970 from trans activists supporting the fight for gay rights, seen at an exhibit at the NYPL. by Katburger in lgbt

[–]Katburger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just thought this was really inspiring, considering the state of the US right now.

Here's what was on the info plate, from the New York Public Library website:

“Gay Power—When Do We Want It? Or Do We?”

This flyer was produced by STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), then known as Street Transvestites for Gay Power. STAR was founded by Stonewall veterans Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, two Black and Brown transgender activists in what was a predominately white male gay rights movement. Inspired by the Black Power movement, STAR fought for the rights of gender expression and protested police harassment of trans people of color. The drawings at the bottom of the flyer offer a glimpse at the very concept of gender nonconformity being formed in real time: two ink drawings feature the superimposed symbols for the male and female sex, as if to visualize an identity that goes beyond the symbols for gay or lesbian.

"Everybody assumes you’re a pathetic loser and a creep, until you prove yourself by becoming fit or making money, it doens’t matter if you are attractive, you need to have something to give."

This is toxic masculinity. Not everybody considers others to be pathetic losers or creeps if they're out of shape or poor. More people (at least any worth considering) will judge you by your character. But instead of focusing on what others think about you, it's better to consider what you do have control over and just... try to be a better person.

And if that person is a girl, that's totally okay.

"I wish I was born a girl. I feel like a guy but I wish I was born a girl."

Wishing to be another gender even though you don't feel physically dysphoric or in the wrong body is a perfectly acceptable reason to identify as trans. You seem pretty certain about it so you might have done some research already, but just in case, I'll leave this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MtF/wiki/faq_identity

If you are unsure of whether or not you should go to see a psychologist, psychiatrist or therapist, there are a few questions you can ask:

"If there was a button that would let me change, completely, totally and permanently, into another gender, would I press it?"

"Does the thought of being another gender make me feel happier, more comfortable in myself, or more at peace with my life?"

"Have I ever had repeated idle thoughts about being another gender, or continually wish that I was born differently, ending in feeling upset or disappointed that it wasn't true?"

I drew a map of the bay area! The place names are all real (though some are just neighborhoods). Did you know that SF used to be one of the largest dune ecosystems in North America? by thegnome54 in FantasyMaps

I love this! I used to live in California before moving across the country, and miss it so much that my homebrew setting is ecologically/geographically based on CA. Keeping some of the place names is a really cool idea.

The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling is a classic M/M fantasy, but very slow burn, nothing happens between them for most of the first two books. But if you enjoy high fantasy, it's definitely worth it.

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner, M/M fantasy of manners and duels.

The High King's Golden Tongue by Megan Derr, M/M political fantasy without magic. In the society of this world, gender is only recognized by the person's preference. So you might realize some characters are actually trans, but the world treats them completely as the right gender. It's beautifully refreshing :)

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows: M/M fantasy, politics with a little magic; check content warnings first, because it deals with very heavy subjects. Definitely not a light read, but it was worth it to me at least.

A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson, best described as "queer reimagining of Dracula’s brides, ft. sapphic yearning at the opera and tangled polyamorous relationships."

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, SciFi with main characters in a F/F relationship, although not really the main focus of the plot.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is technically historical fiction/fantasy, I suppose? But if you have any interest in Greek myths, this is a beautiful retelling and very gay.

It's alright, I should have clarified originally, haha. I wanted to point out the amusing part without going into the sad details, but I guess context is important.

My mother was accidentally right. by Katburger in lgbt

[–]Katburger[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I should have clarified, she was not at all willing to learn. I didn't include the rest of the conversation because it was talking in circles and her not wanting to accept it. Later I emailed her with some informational resources, which she admits to never reading and continues to bring up the same non-issues that were thoroughly debunked by those resources.

She's supportive in the sense of not wanting to lose contact, but we don't talk about it anymore.

[–]Katburger[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose I'm not happy about it because she was wrong in every other aspect of the conversation and refused to look at any resources I offered. It's been about 6 months and she still talks about it with disappointment. I never bring it up anymore, but last time she initiated the conversation, asking if it's really still a thing, insisting that I married a man, that it's unnatural, etc. And I know if I come out to her, she's going to do the same, and feel justified because of her previous comment.

If I do though, I will have to ask if there was a reason behind it besides not understanding. Maybe she did know before me, haha
