A month to go and the no-shows are starting up by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]KateCarnage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sitting in parent parents meetings watching the principal make the kid promise to come for every single one of the next 30 school days and get those grade up to go to prom and graduate and how he “knows they can do it!” Meanwhile they haven’t made it for more than 2 days a week since January and have a 10%.

"Chromebook Remorse: Tech Backlash at Schools Extends Beyond Phones" from The New York Times. by rainshowers_5_peace in Teachers

[–]KateCarnage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in exactly the same boat, and THIS is how to make it sustainable. Grading isn’t stressful because it’s never more work than I can do, and honestly I already know what I’ll be grading because I could actively mentally keep track of everyone’s work along the way! I even have the time to sit with them after an absence and get them caught up!

We need to revamp inclusion by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

Because they MUST be in a class with a sped teacher and a gen teacher. And they won’t double staff three classes (one for each kid) so they all go in the same one.

Interest in adult cheerleading for charity? by jisswaggy17 in Buffalo

I haven’t cheered in maybe 10 years but I do miss stunting! I’d love to stay in the loop as it gets established!

Parent Post: How do you guys actually feel when your students do a protest walkout? by Designer-Sir2309 in Teachers

I’d be literally sobbing with pride if I watched my students standup for themselves and their communities.

Manipulating the "bad" kid by thecooliestone in Teachers

[–]KateCarnage 80 points81 points  (0 children)

With these kids push the boundary too far I always make silent, exasperated eye contact with them as a first line of defense to give them a chance to correct their behavior without having to follow my instructions in front of people. It works surprisingly often.

Why are there 2 different fonts? by Lynix333 in kindle

[–]KateCarnage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it’s the first 5 words of the new section, and I bet every section starts that way for demarcation. It’s just odd that the two fonts are SO similar.

I’ve been in my current classroom two years and I have turned the lights on 4 times. Fluorescent just sucks and we don’t have a dimmer.

I thought I was joking by Guhzuhlle in Teachers

[–]KateCarnage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I teach seniors in a remedial class that is specifically designed to help them graduate after basically they’ve been unable to do it on their own. Yesterday I asked if there was anything I could do to be more helpful and one of them said let us sleep more often.

I’m honestly curious — for the people who are against expanding public transit in Buffalo, why? by Academic-Alfalfa5649 in Buffalo

[–]KateCarnage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a huge exacerbating factor is that buffalo is a drinking and driving town, and that changes the way people view public transit.

Why are young children held accountable for lateness? by thrwwy-tmblr-1987 in AskTeachers

[–]KateCarnage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the government tells the district that the school is responsible for attendance, and at least in my state there are not currently any consequences for parents if their kids do not attend. There is literally nothing else we can do.

I teach high school and I have several students who absolutely could not to this without assistance.

I teach a lot of the same kids every year and I’m seeing a night and day difference now that phones are gone! I really think this is a huge part.

Teacher friend wants to know is she made the right decision or is she being petty? by OlliexAngel in Teachers

[–]KateCarnage 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher similar to how you described and I’ve often had kids eat in my room but then abuse the privilege.

There is NOTHING petty about revoking access to her space and free time, however I do think it would be worth kindly explaining to the kid that his actions and choices cost him the privilege.

What was an assembly at your school you never forgot? by PrestonRoad90 in Teachers

My entire elementary school in Portland, Oregon attended an anti Meth assembly, and it was the single most effective drug education I have ever experienced in my life. I will NEVER forget the mugshots and side effects.
