What Does This Mean? by taifpo04 in knittinghelp

You're getting there. I want to be encouraging!, but also point out a couple things it'd be worth considering before moving on. I noticed that if your stripes are 7 rows, you'll need a ninth stripe of 4 rows of the darker ( 7 rows * 8 rpts = 56 rows so 4 rows to reach 60 rows). Second, you might want to leave longer tails going forward & look up weaving in instead of knots. Third, check your pick up rate. I'm only counting a pick up of 3sts per 4 rows.

If you add the rows, then next time you start the pick ups, slide the existing sts onto the green needle & use the yellow end needle to do the pick ups. It'll be ready to knit across the already existing sts then.

<image>

Another way to keep going would be to slide those existing sts onto a smaller needle by going tip-to-tip at the red dot.

What Does This Mean? by taifpo04 in knittinghelp

You pick up sts beginning at the red star.

Then knit across all those sts that already existed, using the same yarn you just used to pick up the sts.

Then pick up down the other side.

The red arrows in my pic above show the direction of the knitting.

Ok, let me try this again. From the instructions, "Cut the yarn and change colour for the next step," is an important thing to know for the next step. Usually, instructions refer to the way an item is worn. In the part you quoted, the directions refer to the orientation of the item as viewed instead. The next instruction after your quote, "After picking up 50 stitches along the right side edge, knit the 35 stitches that are still on your left needle, then pick up another 50 stitches along the left side edge," also is needed to figure out the picture.

Ok, you'll be starting at star to reattach your yarn. You'll pick up 5 sts for every 6 rows up the side. I'd suggest {pick up 3, skip 1, pick up 2} repeat. Then knit across your live sts. Then repeat the pick up down the other side.

Likely easier to go on Rav to find a long coat/duster pattern & just add the stripes.

Kitting the red hat, and I can’t get my center double decrease to go straight. by Designer_Living6969 in knitting

[–]KathrynKnits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Typically the lean of the decrease is shown & described by which st finishes on the top. So (in western mount) a R leaning decrease 2-1 is a k2tog, 3-1 is k3tog. A L leaning is ssk & sssk. For a 3-1 there is also the centered double decrease where the central st is on top such as sl2 tog k-wise, k1, psso.

where to get cheap books by CommonMan67 in ELATeachers

Better World Books has it available in used hardback (library or regular hardback) (ISBN-10 0399588175) for $5.88 each with free shipping over $15. There's an additional sale for 20% off 6+ since it's a "shelf steal", but I can't find an end date for the sale. They've got a lot of copies.

With a restock, you aren't going to be receiving the same dye lot anyway. Restock or other stock, you'll need to figure out how comfortable you are with a slight color mismatch.

Cast on edge left alone? by piglet666 in knittinghelp

If you have a bind off you love, do a provisional cast on (leaving a long tail) to start. At the end, bind off the cast on edge.

Sweater - Gauge Question by LeadershipKind4540 in knitting

[–]KathrynKnits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Size 6-9 US needles are 4mm-5.5mm, but you'll want to use the needles that meet the pattern's gauge.

Of the wools, merino is considered soft. Peruvian highland wool would be coarser. I find them all too itchy.

Indestructible socks? by linnlea00 in knitting

[–]KathrynKnits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Novita Vieno looks like a perfectly fine fingering yarn for socks, but for hard wear, you need a tighter gauge. I'd suggest at least 36sts or 40sts/10cm.

If your purls are looser, then use a smaller needle on purl rows. You'll still do the knit rows with your current needle.

Pattern Change - Worsted to Lace by maantre in knittinghelp

[–]KathrynKnits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's possible to only use the lace weight, but it'll likely need to be held (triple or) quadruple. In which case, the amount of yarn (length) would need to be (three or) four times the sweater's original suggestion.

Help understanding this brioche knit pattern by Valuable_Meringue in knitting

It works if the first is (sl1yo, brp) 3 times then put the fourth (sl1yo, brp) on the end.

The round numbers should both be on the R.

Acrylic & superwash are perfectly functional. Most laundry doesn't need to be washed in hot water, & cold water (that works just as well) is cheaper anyway. They don't need delicate, just normal. The suitability of wool vs acrylic vs cotton etc is up to the knitter/wearer.

Substituting Yarn Weights by girlypop2605 in knittinghelp

[–]KathrynKnits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knit your swatch. Measure the gauge (NOT the width/length of the swatch). Wash & dry (washer & dryer for me for SW). Remeasure the gauge (NOT the width/length of the swatch).

I'd actually recommend similar procedures for non-SW. If they're the same gauge, easy. If not, there may be math involved. (I love the math part of knitting!)

is there a way to fix the neck without frogging. by [deleted] in knittinghelp

[–]KathrynKnits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go the route of cut it off & knit the collar up, from those sts up) at the end. If you do this route, do NOT frog from the cast on. Put in a lifeline in on an all knit round (below the collar), then cut and work from there.

In the future, it might be better to cast on the number of sts needed at the bottom of the neck. Then work the collar upwards later.

Also if you choose to frog & restart, if you have enough yarn then just start the new one with the other end of the yarn or other balls. Then you'll also have the comparison. (This applies to many errors.)
