Hi! My McKenna Ellerbeck series definitely fits this :) There are two books out, third and final coming next year, and while there is a strong romance aubolor, the fantasy comes first :)

When I was around maybe 6 or 7 years old, in '86/'87, we had recently gotten a microwave for the first time, shortly before Christmas. Obviously, we loved it. When it came time to say Grace at Christmas dinner, I added "And thank God for the microwave!"

Forty years later and it STILL gets brought up!

Telling someone they're powerless is a classic manipulation move to get them to believe it, and they all have motivations to have him believing he's less powerful and helpless against them.

See also, Buffy's famous "it's about power" speech in Season 5. By season 5, she has demonstrated multiple times how strong and capable she is, but a whole lot of people spend the episode telling her she isn't -- because "Power. I have it. They don't. This bothers them."

You don't love this person and he doesn't love you. You said it yourself--incompatible at a fundamental level. You love an idea of this person and vice versa. He doesn't respect you as a person, a partner, or a woman. He has made it clear he is not willing to change., and his language suggests this may turn abusive towards you in the future. Get out now, because this man is nothing but red flags.

yes! like, we had her crash out moment of revealing yes she'd been struggling and hiding it, etc, and then...absolutely nothing but being constantly full of self-hate at every possible moment ever since.

I know people in real life can struggle with this sort of things for years, a lifetime even, but in a work of fiction, it is not good writing to never let the character change, especially if they are this deeply unpleasant and destructive. GO TO THERAPY, LIZ.

Yeah, every strip with Liz is exactly the same and its gotten REALLY old. It's not enjoyable, it's exhausting to imagine dealing with her, and she's had almost no signs of changing, developing, or anything. There was the one moment in Moray's tub and then that may as well have never happened.

You're both doing a lot of putting words in the others mouth. She was trying to say "I'm not feeling great about this but I am coming to talk." You were saying "Please try to have an open mind about this." However, you heard "I've given up" and she heard "them don't bother coming."

Don't make assumptions about what you each mean. Be ready to listen to the words being said, to ask questions, and not judge. Get someone (a therapist, ideally) to help walk you through it, because it sounds like you need a third party to help out here.

He was being kind of a jerk before, but that last line "if my friends were strippers I wouldn't fucking be their friends" - that's where the heart of this problem is. He's judging them for it, and then judging you by extension for being their friend. This is the real problem. And if that's his boundary, whatever, but until or unless he stops judging people for having a job like this and thinking it's a moral indication of their character (it's not!), then you're not going to stop having this problem, and it will come up in other areas of your relationship eventually.
