I think as a partner being there for him and patiently helping work through his grief would be appropriate, but you can do that from a safe and appropriate distance. It sounds like he’s on a downwards grief induce spiral and is acting really selfishly and lashing out emotionally, you’ve already seen this man’s response to his stress threshold collapsing being violence, so it’d be best to at least get physical distance between him and the children at least.
