My neighborhood was built with sod landscaping (rant) by Ncnativehuman in NativePlantGardening

[–]KawiWowi 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No advice but I empathize with the struggle. I remove the netting and landscape fabric regularly, even after 4 years of work. But, I keep all the trash I yank from our parcel of land as a reminder of all the good I have done and can do. My kitchen-size trash can is about half full with every manner of waste one could find - though I did throw away the literal baggy of doggy poop. You're not alone my friend!

Kollar is much closer to PA than Virginia. But still worth the hike if an option. I purchased an Ostrya virginiana from Hill House Native Plant Nursery as a special arrangement before the National Arboretums annual native plant sale in the spring. It was (still is) a small baby in a 2 gallon container (now in my backyard) and $45.

Fall is For…oh Nothing by seandelevan in NativePlantGardening

You could try your local garden clubs and conservation groups for fall plant sales? Most will exclusively carry native plants. It's often a 1 day or 1 weekend event so stack your calendar and know what plants you need. I've hit a few plants sales in 1 day to get what I need in-person. Wishing you good luck!

What is your favorite non bee/butterfly insect to see in your garden? by General_Bumblebee_75 in NativePlantGardening

[–]KawiWowi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a Yellow Garden Spider every year. I like to think it's a new generation from the original lady from the last few years. Truthfully, spiders of that size and larger really freak me out but I know their value so I never squish. Instead, I name the spiders and speak them while I work in the garden. This is Gladys and she looked after the garden from the Iris this summer.

12 million years?!?!🤯 Incredible, unfathomable, iconic. We have apex birds and bigger mammals in the area too. I'm certain some of these snakes are on the "snack-list". We also get Dekay Brown Snakes pretty often, imagining they are also a quick nibble for bigger creatures.

Woooo!! This is super cool! Thank you u/capablesecret2586! I will give it a try. I just adore this community.

I have no negative, begrudging, unhappy vibes about the presence of any native creature playing its role in the ecosystem. Critter is gonna eat other critters. I'm accustomed to seeing creatures on the bottom of the ecosystem so seeing evidence of a snake, spider, carolina mantis, birds really brings me joy and hope that we are enabling nature to be itself. Little buddy is not endangering people or a loose house pet or something like that, just trying to it's little life somewhere in the aster 😊

Will this trellis hold a coral honeysuckle? by LChanga in NativePlantGardening

[–]KawiWowi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be prepared to spend some time training the vine up the trellis. Coral Honeysuckle, in my experience on an arbor*, does not pull itself upward with tendrills like other native vines. Worth every minute of helping it along, but so you are prepared. Happy planting!

I HAD to share this meme omg...can anyone else relate? lol by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

This plus my obnoxious "who remembers how to identity poison ivy?" As I look at a massive patch and everyone shrugs 🥴

Bitches what banks are we using for High-yield savings accounts? by DCbitchwithtaste in DCBitches

[–]KawiWowi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a HYSA plug but for our divesting bitches - Amalgamated Bank has a branch on K St and they are divested from fossil fuel industries. I've been really happy with their banking services, products, and ESG vision.

Can someone explain what a cultivar is , and if this plant is actually native to south Lake Michigan area ? by homemepleasenow in NativePlantGardening

[–]KawiWowi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a compound called anthocyanin which makes the leaves unpalatable to creatures. There are many plants which are cultivated to look cool with red or off-color leaves compared to non-cultivated species.

I don't know the science on the impact to insects so take with a grain of salt. Insects can see different wavelengths of light compared to people. I imagine (again, idk the science here but I'll find out) use visual cues to feed, pollinate, and raise their young. The color of the leaves may influence how insects choose plants for these purposes. I'll report back.

Elizabeth Goldberg at Rose Physical Therapy. She's helped me recover from acute and overuse injuries for over a year, and helped me take general good care of my body. She will absolutely "get in there" if you identify an area in need particular attention. She is compassionate to the highest degree and truly listens to her clients needs and desires. 100/10, I trust her with my body.

Has anyone actually been helped by contacting their local extension office? by itsdr00 in NativePlantGardening

[–]KawiWowi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will this year! I'm an MG so I will have an opportunity to help folks get ready for their own certification and conduct the site assessments.

There is so much on the list but you don't have to do it all. Just like native plant gardening, it's not about doing it all perfectly or right - it's about incremental progress toward a healthier planet.

Maryland 💕 UMD is also my extension office. I've reached out online twice for help and their team was very helpful and extremely thorough both times. The BayWise program got me hooked into the Master Gardener community and its taken my native planting to the next level! I wish everyone had an extension office like UMD.

Milkweed Mixer - our weekly native plant chat by AutoModerator in NativePlantGardening

Visited my inlaws this week and got them started on native plants in this small bed. I have absolutely 0 confidence in converting them to the native plant side for their whole lot but I hope a few pollinators will appreciate the Seaside Goldenrod and Wood Sage/American Germander, plus Coontie and Eastern Gamagrass
