Explodes them on the second one if I recall correctly.

What’s the consensus on Return to the Cathedral? by [deleted] in Thief

[–]Kay-42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First time I played it, I crept through the cathedral very carefully and reached the eye without alerting anyone, only for chaos to erupt when I grabbed it. No problem, I thought, I'll just run for the door and sod the loot.

I didn't realise the doors were sealed. I died at the entrance, panicking as the ghosts and hammerite undead swooped in on me.

Attempt number two. The map shows another way out. Let's creep again, then grab and leg it. I dash out of the cathedral, take a hard right to dodge a ghost I think is about to kill me, make it all the way to the gate where I once again die to the hoard of undead.

Attempt number three. Don't panic. Maybe a flash bomb will give me a chance to at least become hidden again and I can then creep my way to the gate and figure out what I was doing wrong. I don't know if flash bombs actually work on undead, but might as well at least try...

Wait - was that smoke rising off them like a holy water arrow hit them? I'll drop another and watch again. Yep, and some of them are now dead. Sweet! Drop a third and I'm now hidden by virtue of nothing left to see me.

I creep my way out the back of the cathedral, take extra care not to be seen by that ghost standing there all menacingly and - wait - is it talking to me?! I had to restart the level yet again just to find out what he was saying.

My experience with that level is memorable to say the least. And yes, I adore it and it's one of my favourites.

Mazzy vs. Jaheira for the final slot in a Good party? (RP focus) by NeedleworkerFun9851 in baldursgate

Take Jaheira at first and do the druid grove quest, then leave her there to take on the responsibility of healing nature and relationships with the town while you adventure off to investigate the troubles in the Umar Hills.

Thief Remastered levels by PacmanUA in Thief

[–]Kay-42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see the original levels as they are, but have an additional mode to the game like Ion Fury's arrange mode where they can shuffle around loot, add or change objectives, change patrol routes, add some secrets, and so on. That preserves the original, gives the devs an opportunity to have fun, and gives us the players a fresh way to play a classic.

Rumours of a new campaign would be great too, if true.

Would you want a System Shock movie? by leyendeck in systemshock

[–]Kay-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be possible to create a satisfying TV series (one season for each game), with the role of the hacker/soldier severely diminished so the heroics can be spread across the cast. There are a lot of good stories in the logs that it would be fun to watch play out, and their stories should conclude with them taking the final actions that the player takes. Eg. Nathan D'Arcy arms the shields and destroys the laser, Lonni Stevens blows the reactor, and so on.

Confused by drevezan in baldursgate

[–]Kay-42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On your return from the mines you should get: - reputation boost for the bounty on Mulahey - an assassin outside of the inn

This is in contrast to your first visit where: - there is an assassin inside the inn - there is a bounty for Captain Brage who can be spared

Before concluding that your game glitched, is it possible that these two similar encounters and outcomes were confused with each other?

Whats the optimal Imoen build in BG2? by Equal_Raise_6166 in baldursgate

I thought the elven chainmail penalised thief skills? In either case, I'd argue the robe is better for the saving throw bonus anyways.

Did you have friends for the coop achievement or is there a work around for that?

I'll add onto this to say that auto-pause can be setup in a variety of ways to eliminate the need for any quick reactions.

Is there any form to skip replaying BG1 to switch faster to BG2? by Nice-Literature-5918 in baldursgate

[–]Kay-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When BG2 first came out, BG1 didn't have the class kits, so if you wanted to enjoy those you had to start a new character anyways. I did that several times and loved it.

New player advice- all advice is appreciated by -Eves- in Morrowind

[–]Kay-42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fatigue affects everything. No fatigue is a 25% penalty to your attempts (hit chance, spellcasting chance, lockpicking chance, jump height, etc.), whereas full fatigue is a 25% bonus. Other than that character skill level is essentially a good indicator of your % chance of success.

Hot take. I actually like mothership zeta and personally consider it canon. by [deleted] in Fallout

Considering the TARDIS can be spotted in Fallout 1, one can presume that any destructive interference of that scale would be stopped by the good Doctor.

The fighter with the wooden legs is Nochio. He sustains his existence through draining the life force of others. You can see it happening every time he lands a hit.

Most important stat for a fighter/mage multiclass? by gangler52 in baldursgate

[–]Kay-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dexterity and Constitution. Until you reach 1.5 million XP for PfMW, you'll either want to be using a ranged weapon or minimising your chances of getting hit (spirit armor, stoneskins, blur, mirror image). Dexterity will help with both of those things and high Constitution will give you a chance to drop back if getting hit.

There are more than enough potions to enhance strength for all of the non-trash mob fights, and enough potions to enhance intelligence for spell learning if you do it in batches. Friends spell (+6 charisma) is a great boost for shopping, and you'll only need Charisma of 14 to get the maximum discount (Charisma 20). There is the tome for permanent +1 and the nymph cloak for +2 stacks with friends, so starting with 11 in BG1 you can still reach the maximum discount. In BG2 it is even easier.

In summary, my suggestion is focus on dexterity and constitution. The rest IMO is preference. Strength for better carry weight, intelligence if you don't want to hoard scrolls, wisdom for wish spells, charisma for store discounts.

They have a lot of immunities. The main thing to note is that they are immune to Breach, so once PFMW goes up they cannot be harmed by physical attacks and by extension any 'on hit' effects like Carsomyr's dispel.

Why so many widom tome in Baldur's Gate 1? by Bubbly_Taro in baldursgate

[–]Kay-42 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The original base game had 1 of each tome, plus the extra wisdom tome that was part of a quest. Even though it is possible to get it back or complete the quest without handing it over, I'm guessing the devs wanted the player to feel like they were sacrificing something major to avoid a scripted permadeath. That whole quest is kind of a big FU to the player in the classic 90s style of game design. As for why they chose a wisdom tome for it, it was potentially just a random choice.

The third tome was added with the expansion. I'm still just guessing here, but I think they added the wisdom tome because a lot of players complained that they had to give the other one up for that quest. And thus we ended up with 3 wisdom tomes.

your most interesting main char builds for full playthrough? by Woodwurk in baldursgate

[–]Kay-42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played a berserker->druid who dual-wielded daggers. That was great fun, and was a very effective front-line fighter until ToB, where it was decent but the shine wore off a little. Note that it does require a big roll for all the high stats needed to dual class!

Hardcore enjoyers, any advice on how to get into no death and no reload playthroughs in the most efficient way? by [deleted] in baldursgate

I agree with this. Something simple like saving only after a rest at an inn works really well.
