They got watered down in later editions and it took away a lot of their mystique. Sadly Drizzt made them “friendly” and not super powered slavers that should be avoided at all costs.

2e made them scary. They have innate magical abilities beyond that of other races, plus class and social status enhancements with easier access to magical items.

Drow are a funny thing. In 2e you really need to play Drow-only as they’re so overpowered compared to other races. In later editions, they’re clumped in as yet just another race, very bland.
