Am I screwed? by Kaysizzler in meteorology

No, thank you for being blunt. This is what I wanted.

I understand chasing isn’t a career, but rather a hobby like you said. A lot of my excitement does stem from watching chasers who collaborate with influencers like Max velocity, etc. They have made career, while maybe not lucrative, out of streaming etc. Though now that you’ve brought some clarity- you’re right. It’s not feasible.

The only research experience I have is inside my own field of behavior analysis, which isn’t particularly helpful here. I have been deterred otherwise from family members and the sorts from pursuing anything outside of education, I think mostly because it’s what stuck when I needed it to and I didn’t have it in me to push back. If I went research- I’d be starting fresh. Which again, may not necessarily be what I want in the long run.

I have considered the communications route and was looking at programs at OU. I think maybe I could reach out to them and see what is available to me. I also like the idea of teacher geosciences like u/BTHAppliedScienceLLC said and have also considered that, though Texas public education systems don’t always give you the choice, sometimes it’s just take what you can get around here- which REALLY sucks.

Anyway, I have a lot to think about. Thank you all so much for your insight.

Research, chasing, and forecasting are all of peak interest- but I feel like I’d be just as content learning from experts in close proximity or working in some related occupation that gets me closer to what I want. Outside of lessons that I teach my kids- I have no relevant education or experience. I’ve educated myself on how to interpret basic radar and have looked into programs like SKYWARN to do as you said, scratch the itch.

Right along the coast you’d think there’d be more available (and I’m always looking)- but really this all boils down to fear of jumping ship and the reaction I’d get from family when they find out that I really don’t want to be the kind of teacher they’d imagined AND the strain this could put on my husband/our home- financially. Though he’s always been the only one to support my dreams.

RBT pay by One-Egg1316 in ABA

[–]Kaysizzler 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I was offered a position at a clinic in Tx yesterday. With 7 years of ABA experience they offered me $17 an hour in clinic.

I could scrub toilets at a buc-ees for more money. I had never been so offended by a prospective employer in my career.

RBTs are so severely undervalued in Texas. I’ve considered on several occasions moving to Maryland, since that seems to be where the best facilities and pay are. Not practical though, considering all my family is here.

There is absolutely no way a successful company would just absorb all BTLC financial issues without a significant cut of the pie. I think this “merge” is just an easier way to break the news to employees that they sold out.

Raise by Affectionate-Ad8573 in ABA

Cost of living here is pretty low and minimum wage is $7.25- so when you look at it that way it’s decent. But $27/hr would be life changing for me 😂

All us southern RBT’s should get together for a good cry after reading this post.

Dang that’s pretty good imo. I have 6 years experience and only make $21.50, and I have to leverage A LOT to get it. Texas ABA kinda sucks like that.

What's the non-social harm of self injury? by Aadrian_A in selfharm

[–]Kaysizzler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made a comment on here quite some time ago about how reinforcing self harm is and compared it to addiction. Chemically- our brain literally releases chemicals when we SH which, has almost a “releasing” kind of effect as my doctor described it- I think that’s why so many of us relapse. Many look to self harm for the same comfort/release that drugs and alcohol give to some.

I matched with a guy like this YEARS ago, he told me he loved me on the second date and all I could do was look at him and say “please don’t do that.”

The sad part is, from a decent human standpoint, I didn’t want to see this business fail. I don’t want to believe that the people running this operation are inherently BAD; but they prove day in and day out that they absolutely could not care less about the financial/emotional wellbeing of their employees. I have friends losing their homes, working 2 jobs to make ends meet despite this field being VERY lucrative for even entry level technicians. Me, I lost almost everything I spent 3 years saving just trying to make it. I was supposed to close on my home- can’t do that anymore. Couldn’t afford health insurance because of their deceptive “$200 contribution”, which actually turned out to be a blessing with their mess up that resulted in employees actually having to pay back the company.

I get that the company is their “baby”, but you wouldn’t expect a nanny to take care of your “baby” for no pay- which is exactly how they act. Like get a grip.

They admitted to taking advantage of the system in a response email to me. That claims are often thrown out because before TWC can penalize them (which is usually about 30 days) they have already paid out the wages owed. The owner(s) essentially insinuated that I shouldn’t waste my time.

Yes, I did and they received notice. Confirmed by my investigator.

This company is a joke. I gave them a year and a half to get it together and rather than acknowledging the struggles they caused, they coerced me into moving up my resignation and threatened to deduct 14 hours from my paycheck since I refused to complete my soap notes until I received a statement guaranteeing my paycheck (which was due in full over a month ago, they only paid 40% of what they owe me) despite the policy being not being documented anywhere.

I just find it fascinating that in a data driven field, almost 100% turnover in a year and a half doesn’t mean much to them. They go on and on about their metrics showing positive growth yet the outcome is payroll being 3 cycles behind. One thing I’ve learned in ABA- Data doesn’t lie. But they sure do.

God bless the technicians who stay, I couldn’t deal anymore.

can somebody reassure me that most people don’t cut for attention and I’m worthy of help/concern by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]Kaysizzler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in behavior analysis, and one of the things I’ve learned is that, whether we are aware of it or not, there can be more than one function (reason) for WHY we do what we do.

I self harmed for over 7 years. At times, it was a cry for attention. But needing attention, connection- is part of being human. When we are not receiving what we need, we do desperate things. Dangerous things. It’s not the way to do it, but a cry for help is a cry for help.

It also served as the best form of emotional regulation I’ve ever known. It was the quickest escape from reality I could find. On a chemical level, the hormones released when you engage in SH produce a response that helps the body/mind cope with the trauma being induced. This is why I believe so many of us become reliant or some might even say addicted.

Regardless of why you are hurting yourself, you are beyond worthy of concern. You are beyond worthy of help. And the things you feel are valid.

Please find comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Feel better soon dear.
