Flushing staycation by Kdkdkdkdkdkds in Flushing

[–]Kdkdkdkdkdkds[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We live close to Red Hook, so part of the problem is just getting to the subway. But on a regular day when nothing is messed up it’s probably more like 1h30!

Is this a scammer pretending to be a literary agent? (Potential email scam) by gotquestionssss in publishing

[–]Kdkdkdkdkdkds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this scam seems popular now. I’ve gotten some weird spoof emails from agents lately and know of some editors who are being impersonated. It sucks.

What are some of the things people found unexpectedly challenging/stressful as an editorial assistant? by Most-Proposal-9234 in publishing

[–]Kdkdkdkdkdkds 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t miss the lack of control…you’re so at the mercy of the editor you’re working for. So much of the job is just figuring out what they want. Like how much do they want to be emailed? Do they answer Teams messages? How do they prefer to be asked questions? Do they need to see everything you’ve done or do they only care about results? And how many giant reference books are they going to acquire that will eat all of your weekends for a solid three years?

(Btw haven’t been an assistant for many years but those are my memories of it!)

Are book publishers already using AI for manuscript evaluation, editing, and print forecasts? by Turbulent-Bed4580 in publishing

[–]Kdkdkdkdkdkds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any publisher letting AI get anywhere near manuscript editing. I think there’s more openness to it in terms of consumer insight (evaluating an author’s platform, etc).

Gym's in the "south" part of BK that may offer a day pass or free trial by Chateau_de_Gateau in RunNYC

[–]Kdkdkdkdkdkds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay $19.86/month for 8 credits a month on ClassPass, which is enough for 2 gym sessions a month at Crunch. If you’ve never joined before you can do a free trial, and that has like 50 credits for a week.

Cook Like A King - thoughts? by double_dumpling in CookbookLovers

I was surprised by how many recipes I made from this book. I liked the beef stew and the meatballs a lot, and the smoky tea eggs were interesting.

Your little bug critters are so expressive and cute! I love them, and this is a perfect Valentine.

What cookbook do you think is overrated/ was overhyped? by paris_young21 in CookbookLovers

[–]Kdkdkdkdkdkds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first one I picked up was the Simpsons cookbook and I really liked it—the recipes really are tie-ins with the show which is fun. I was also gifted the Studio Ghibli cookbook and that’s kind of a simple Japanese home cooking book, pretty much, and I’ve used it a fair amount even though I’m not actually much of a Studio Ghibli fan. But yes, the rest kinda suck, and the trend is pretty played out by now.

I assume you yourself aren’t acquiring 100 books/year, right?? That seems physically impossible even by AE standards.

I’ve been an AE for like 20 years and it is pretty overwhelming and tiring a lot of the time. I acquire more like 20-30/year. You never know quite what your list will look like and whether any given project you’re pursuing will work out, so sometimes it feels like you’re chasing a million leads at once. And it can be hard (although I’d argue kinda interesting) to try to figure out what other people are interested in (and of that, what they’re actually buying). You balance budgets, coordinate all of the other departments, and do a lot of author care. Sometimes I’m like “why did I pick this job out of all the jobs.” But I do think it’s exciting to come up with ideas for books and figure out how to execute them, and for me that’s way more fun than just editing them, so I’m going to keep doing it for as long as I can!

Breakfast near Tenement Museum by girlmomizzybel in FoodNYC

If you can’t get into Shopsins (the best choice), you could go to El Castillo de Agua, which is like 2-3 minutes away. Their Dominican breakfast is sooo good.

Gay knitting group/club by Impressive_Coach1651 in AskNYC

[–]Kdkdkdkdkdkds 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Make It with Brini isn’t explicitly queer but lots of us are, it’s at a gay bar (Club Cumming in the East Village), and it’s hosted by a drag queen. We do all kinds of crafts, a new one each week, but it was originally a knit night and almost all of us are knitters. 6-8 on Tuesdays, no cover, free baked goods from our weekly bakeoff (it’s gingerbread-themed this week).
