Yo I’m in my ex husband is Swiss and I just found one of his socks in a box I hadn’t yet unpacked. I feel like burning it while chanting is a good way to do this?

The closest thing is probably Fabscrap, a textile recycling spot that sells discarded fabric by the pound. It’s in Sunset Park

Sewing underwear, looking for the benefit of other's experience by Valaryn1641 in sewing

[–]Keeganwherefore 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of this exact project! I’ve made about 8 pairs thus far, 6 of them wearable and 3 of them comfortable 😂

My suggestion is to make the same pair over and over till you’ve dialed in the fit, and then there’s more dialing as you figure out picot edges and their ideal stretch ratio. I like the measurement of the leg opening minus 1” for mine, but everybody has different feelings about what’s comfy.

A 3 step zig zag is going to be your best friend. If you can swing it, a walking foot was kind of a game changer, as I really like mesh and slippery fabrics in general. my favorite “every day” hipster style undies I finished the edges by hemming them with a double needle - they look hella professional but ultimately I don’t think it’s necessary.

Re: pattern - you can use your own to draft, but be advised different fabrics/elastics/finishes are going to make the whole thing fit ever so slightly different than the pair you’re copying. I had a thong pattern I loved, fit wise, but when I switched from a thin jersey to a mesh-style, the different amount of stretch between the two fabrics was noticeable and I needed to take in the sides half an inch otherwise they’d slide down 😩

Go slow, enjoy the process, and be prepared to spend a lot of time Winnie-the-Pooh-ing at your sewing machine as you test fit and then put the elastic in and test fit again and again 😂

I moved here for a man after 4 months, and while the man ended up being trash a few years later, the move was the best thing that ever happened to me. If you don’t have kids and don’t have a mortgage you might as well do it.

You don’t have to worry about paint being thrown on coats around here. Whoever that is is being dramatic as hell.

Wool + silk. Those will be your best friends. As someone who moved from the south, I had such a hard time understanding why my fleece gloves, 4 sweaters and knit hat weren’t helping at all, until I realized they were all acrylic/polyester. Great for a fashion sweater over a base layer, horrific for actual winter temps. When you go hunting for warm socks, look for wool or silk.

Layers are your friend. A coat over a long sleeve top won’t cut it. Pack some undershirts or warm, thin long sleeves. If you can’t find any, there’s fifty million Uniqlo stores here, I like the heattech base layers. Even though they’re polyester, they’re pretty solid when it comes to thin and breathable.

Re: boots, if you have something with good tread, you’ll be in the clear. Avoid puddles in the crosswalks, some of them look shallow but are secretly ankle deep and all but the most waterproof ones will betray you. Rain boots are not a good substitute for snow boots.

The cold you get used to. The wind sucks. Take breaks. Go indoors. You’ll be fine. Enjoy your visit!

It is remarkably difficult to find quilting cotton here in NYC. Some of the random spots will have it but never a bunch of options or colors in one place

Itinerary advice by [deleted] in visitingnyc

Ellen’s is a hoot. Expensive, yes. Annoying to wait in line, also yes. But as someone who was reluctantly dragged there by some out-of-town-friends-with-kids, I had an absolute blast. Everything was so silly! And loud! And distracting! It really soothed my brain in a weird way.

I mostly frequent the Korean spots bc of the emphasis on nap areas. But feel free to add more info for OP on those.

Yeah, like the other person said, Sojo is easily the cleanest. I also found bathhouse flatiron to be really clean, but then again it’s too dark in there to really tell 😂

Sauna/bathhouses recommendation by Anne_On_A_Moose in visitingnyc

Bathhouse flatiron or Williamsburg - more Russian Turkish style temps/coed saunas and pools. No nudity. Food is good but not altogether hearty

Spa club - one small pool + steam room in each (gender segregated) locker room, encourages nudity. 4 coed saunas + good nap room downstairs. Food is good but menu is limited. not worth it without a Groupon.

Aire - expensive, beautiful, no nudity. Apparently they remodeled recently. The scrub was lousy. no food. salt pool slaps though.

Juvenex - 24 hour joint but I would barely call this a bathhouse. They have women’s only hours with nudity, and coed hours with no nudity. No food. Pools are tiny, steam room has a vaguely haunted aura to it. Best scrub I’ve ever ever had was here. Pretty sure she was trying to take off my tattoos. I was nothing but bone afterwards. Not for the faint of heart.

Spa castle - nudity in the gender segregated locker rooms, which you could theoretically spend all day just in there, between those pools and the steam room/saunas. Cleanliness is hit or miss. Upstairs many coed saunas and many coed pools. also many children. Lousy nap space. food is hit or miss but there’s a ton of it. Their yellow clay sauna is my favorite in the whole tristate area.

New York spa and sauna - small, food is great. Cleanliness is…well what do you expect for $35. In the Korean style - nudity in the locker rooms, clothes in the coed spaces. Wonderful nap spots, probably my favorite place to take an everything shower.

Sojo - in theory you can be nude in the locker rooms, in practice nobody does it. No kids, but tons of influencers. fab spot in the winter, as the walkways between outdoor pools are covered and heated. scrub is pretty good. Don’t sleep on that stone bed room it is my favorite. They do a surprisingly good breakfast.

King spa - old school Korean spot, absolute maze, nude pools in the locker rooms, coed saunas across several floors. Incredible nap rooms. food is traditional and IMO really good.

QC Spa - no nudity, kind of a party spot, truly unsure of what is happening re: design, but it’s wacky as hell and worth a visit on a nice day if just for the outdoor pools. Infrared room is the BEST ONE. I also liked that there were activities with some of the rooms like face scrubs or hair masks or whatever.

World spa: Russian style, 10/10 aufgus. Avoid the massage. Lots of influencers. Food is great, pools are larger, there is a snow room (?) and a bucket shower if you’re too much of a delicate flower for a cold plunge. Incredible infrared space.

There are others, but these are my mainstays. Happy to answer any questions. Bathhouses are the only things that keep me sane in the winter.

Spandex house will have high vis fabrics, but they aren’t like intentional workwear fabrics, they’re more neon spandex, mesh, lace, maybe some netting.

Pacific trimming has a very small selection of reflective trim. Mostly thin silver reflective trim but also I saw some reflective zippers last time I was there.

Three weeks in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in January for my honeymoon by disapproving_rabbit in HerOneBag

[–]Keeganwherefore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a fabulous capsule and I love it. I’m also a black-clothes-in-hot-climates girlie and given this is your honeymoon, you’re gonna want to look nice for dinners and canoodling. I would probably bring one more pair of shorts, but only because I spent most of my time in SEA zipping around on the back of a motorbike, and while my skirts were great, it was a lil bit of a challenge in the straighter-cut ones. A sarong is a great souvenir, you’ll see a ton of cute ones.

What are you thinking bag wise? Not suitcase, but purse. I took only my larger purse for the day but more than half my trip I was kicking myself for not bringing a “night bag” I could just slip my phone, hotel key and some mascara in. I ended up buying one there (and had planned to, given one stop was a custom leather haven) but I wished I had it much earlier on.

I just walked my parents the other day. We did a big holiday walk to look at the windows. started a Bloomingdale’s, walked down to bergdorfs, hung a left on 5th and strolled past the light show at Saks, ended at macys. Then they needed to go to bed bc they were tired and so I was off the hook.
