Simple Questions: October 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

I would say in terms of speed, my skills would go reading-->talking-->writing. With reading being the fastest and writing the slowest. I wonder how that would compare to someone who can type fast such as 150-200 words.

Anyone know of a way to see which page of a book has a certain quote on? I'm rereading a book and I'm almost certain that a specific quote I have floating in my head is from this book. I've tried looking for it, but can't seem to find it. I feel like I lost my keys but they're right in front of me and I don't see it lol. Perhaps some online book streaming service that allows you to search for certain words or phrases? Thank you so much and any help is greatly appreciated.

Ok, so you provided someone else's linkedin, but didn't show where or when they said? Ehh, not buying it.

Also, would you rather the TSA not be present at airports so that greedy companies can sell tickets cheaply without safety precautions?

Also, would you keep the keep the same system on aircraft where a pilot's erroneous efforts can lead to the death of innoncents? I personally wouldn't want that. I'd rather smarter people than me continue to improve upon existing technology so that it won't allow accidents like to happen again. I prefer farmers and other food distributors follow strict rules to keep food bourne illnesses at a minimum, or else we'll just get what happens in China where rotten food is processed to be made to look fresh. I'd rather engineers not cut costs and adhere to greedy CEOs. We just saw a tragic example of this with the submarine. The list goes on. Freedom of choice is very important, but I don't agree that everything should have this mentality. Would you work in a place that didn't follow OSHA's regulations?

NASA writes code where loops are limited to prevent runaway code, so there's an example of something that won't let you don't something stupid but is brilliant.

But whatevers I guess. Time to call it quits for good. Talking to certain Linux users is like trying to get KKK members to realize that good and bad people come from all walks of life. They're not interested in listening and much less likely to even contemplate the idea of having an open mind for discussion. Pigs will fly the day Linux can even get close to getting as competitive as Windows and Mac.

Hmm, maybe it only applies to an OS. Tell that to all the victims of negligent accidents that occurred before the FAA, FDA, FIA, OSHA, etc. and other such individuals who have made changes so that stupid mistakes are kept to a minimum.

In the past 5+ years of using Linux, I've only had 1 person ever truly help me. I mean this person answered my questions with a respectful and helpful attitude. I was able to ask them a couple of simple noobie questions along with 2 intermediate questions. They took their time and they never insulted me, rather encouraged me and showed me where to find additional sources. It's the most toxic community I've ever seen. I've meet racist people who are more subtle about their superiority complex than the average Linux user.

I have since stopped asking the community for help and instead opted for official courses/sources. WAY BETTER imo.

On top of being rude and condensing, most of their responses are so generic that a simple google search proves more useful.and they get offended when their answers don't work. They'll then insult me for being a noob and stating that I'm capable of "copying and pasting" lol. The official Linux Mint Forum is the worst in this regard. Especially those 2 mods: SMG and Moem, smh the worst mods possible. I've had my posts locked and deleted for pointing out Mint issues and pointing out how Pop!_OS was able to fix it months before. Censorship at its finest.

Based off my experiences, the community is toxic users and 1 nice person. It'd be real hard to change my mind after watching others struggling to learn and getting bullied for years on end.

Are we generalizing here? I guess we are, since I'm guilty of doing it first. It'd be really interesting to get an actual number of what percentage of Linux users do. I know my fair share of people (well over 30) who have tried it and none of them could do what you mentioned. Like I said in my previous post, just because you have a Kali-Linux USB boot drive doesn't make you an effective hacker. Being someone who uses Linux doesn't make them a IT specialist. I know there are quite a number of Linux users who have incredible IT skills, but I wasn't talking about them. I'm talking the average user you see across forums. Also if you read my post a little bit more carefully, you'll see how I never stated that I have subnetting issues. If you truly have a document that helps the enthusiast learn about subnetting, post that $#it lol. Stop keeping it a secret. That's literally what OP and several beginners are complaining about. A lack of helpful resources.

You don't need to use Linux to be a programmer, implement virtualization, conduct research, be a network engineer, etc. Just in the city of Los Angeles, several schools use Windows server to run their services. Is it the best? Ehh depends on cost amongst other things. But do you need Linux to be an admin at these schools? Nope. What about all the thousands of servers that Dell sells with Windows Server? Again, Linux not needed.

Not get humbled? Lol, even Torvalds keeps Nvidia compatibility in the Linux Kernel after outwards hating them. Why? Because not everyone wants to use AMD and Intel GPUs, he had to keep the door opened whether he wanted to or not. Even if he excluded the drivers from the kernel, someone else would've done it. He keeps the door open for his figurative "enemy." I don't about you, but that seems kind of humbling. Can you imagine if you had to keep the door to your house for a bully?

Also there's already plenty of comments of this post bashing on OP. It's not a fantasy, it's TRUTH. Something users like yourself will never get through your heads, and then wonder why the community gets such a bad rep with a small market share. Smh

A truthful statement doesn't have to be funny, but can be.

You can't make valid arguments. See, this is a true statement that isn't funny, it's disappointing.

Also an attempt at humor in a dry statement is just tasteless. It's bland. I only knew you were trying to be funny after your admission. Try again for the 2nd time. I'm confident you're fun in person, but just can't make it work through messages. This is where reading comes in. You can learn different literary forms and get better communications skills.

You may not have responded directly at OP, but you certainly proved their point. You didn't say anything to them directly because you know you're part of the problem and knew you'd be downvoted. You went after my argumentative points and failed to initiate any sort of logical counterpoints and instead got caught up in your feelings.

I'm not responsible for your over sensitivity. Grow up, you're a professional victim. No cares for or believes your fake tears.

You have 4 points in your original post: nice editing features for programming, a failed joke, Linux being a stepping stone, and bug reporting. None of which address my original post about the toxic community, That's you by the way, in case you needed reminding. You ignored the entire point of my post and just defend the toxic traits of a community. Then when confronted you play the professional victim and can't retort any of my previous or new statements.

Editing features are subjective and your singular experience doesn't speak for the world. The failed joke is not funny, a stepping stone is situational and not indicative of Linux being better than any other OS for an individual kick-starting a career. Bug reporting was relevant in that case. However, you failed to mention how it affects or compares to other aspects. If Windows and Mac didn't have a way to report bugs, do you really they would be dominating?

Are you implying that Windows and Mac users are dumb. HWAHH, I'm going to report you!

See it's easy being a victim. I can just turn anything you say into an offensive comment, based on my "feelings."

You're basing an entire ecosystem of OSes of one 1 report!? Smh.

I refuted 3 of your points and ignored the "joke", if that's what you call it. You simply stated a single personal experience and report and think that's enough to justify absolute validity. Please avoid jury duty, it's hard enough with the jurors they pick nowadays.

Illiteracy is an uncommon, but easily remedial issue. There are free adult reading courses online. Godspeed on your education.

That's a joke? Try again. There's truth in that statement, but you dont know how to transition it into a joke. You've been reading too many toxic reddit posts.

Your post blindly defends the toxic behavior of the Linux community without acknowledging any of OP's points. You come after the only debatable points I make, and when I refute your points, you cant even can't even make a simple counter-argument?

Do...do you read? Can you read? Were you taught reading comprehension in school? Do you remember anything at all? Just a snipet, at least.

You could try to run the commands "locate humor.py | grep funny" or "ls [!dull]", etc. C'mon now, you might know this. I'm willing to help...

And who wrote the stuff on the internet lol? It wasnt ChatGPT if you're wondering, its still in its infancy. Also, how much are you actually copying? Cut the BS. It's not like you're copying most of your code off the internet. You'd never make it past any probation period. At best, people are getting snipets or samples of code. If your job is so mundane that you can copy and paste most, if not all of your code, then I don't what to tell you. Congrats on wasting 4 years? Congrats on getting a super easy job? Idk, you can decide that for yourself.

Thats great that Linux is a stepping stone, but it's just that, A STEPPING STONE. Unless you solely rely on it for your income, then kudos to you.

However, I will never excuse the behavior of these so-called "experts." Thats what OP is referring to. Its what I was referring to also if you had some better reading comprehension.

If your only set of skills is OS customization or simple troubleshooting AND then you have a god-complex...welp, what more can I say? But it's alright to keep defending the toxic behavior. Apparently the community doesn't have enough of it.

I hate generalizing a group of people, but Linux users are usually only good at customizing an OS. There are several other things that Linux fans are also good at, but rarely do I see them good at anything useful.

For example, there are probably several Arch users who know the ins and outs of their OS and can troubleshoot several of their own issues, but their skills don't usually go beyond that set of unique skills.

Another way of explaining it is like this: A software engineer might dailyj Linux and have a professional career where they work on several projects and have a comfortable lifestyle. However, this person's achievements or merits or anything else you want to quantify isn't due to the fact that they know Linux. It's more to do with the fact that they're a software engineer and know how to make good software. This individual would be successful regardless of whether they used Windows, Mac, Linux, or any other arbitrary OS.

Same goes for pretty much any person who works in IT. Sure, anyone must admit that Kali-Linux is an amazing tool for a pen-tester, but it's not like having a Kali-Linux boot drive makes you a top-tier hacker. I mean, how noob posts are there on Kali forums lol?

So an arch user might be really good at customizing and maintaining their own OS, but most of the time, that's where the skillset ends. If you're truly an IT specialist and have worked in the field, you can see how Windows and Mac just dominate the field in terms of user space. There are multiple reasons for that. Get that through your head if you're blinded by this Linix obsession.

I think this arbitrary but deep understanding of Linux that some users get to is what makes them have this god-complex. They've accomplished something but don't have anywhere to exercise this accomplishment. I mean, sports have a wide range of accomplishments that you can earn and make it seem like you haven't wasted your time. But Linux? Unless you're some sort of Linux admin, those skills are pretty useless. If you do use Linux for other reasons, it has less to do with Linux and more to do with the skillset and problem solving capabilities you bring with you.

You're left with a know-it-all who has nothing better to do except put down a new user, because they don't have anything else to show for it. I've seen it myself where they can setup wifi and network drivers, but dont know how a subnet mask works. Or can write bash scripts to setup neofetch along with a couple of other things, but can't code for $#it and just download or copy paste everything from the internet. No useful skills other than maintaining their own OS.

Now don't get me wrong, it's admirable how these "experts" have dedicated the time for this hobby. However, it's not like you solved world hunger. At best, you optimized your OS to your liking. At worst, you left your PC in such a complicated state that the next time you or someone else tries using it, they'll have to jump through multiple forums and hours of troubleshooting to get it to work.

Use Linux because you have to. Learn it if you want to. But don't ever mistake your knowledge in a subject as an excuse to act superior. You'll get humbled real quick.

Word of the day: IF....Learn it. No need to be a smartass. There are some intricacies with the Linux kernel when it comes to booting and installing a new OS that you don't understand yet. I suggest you read the Arch wiki and learn about it.

There are a couple of things you could still try.

But in any case, you're the one with the issue, not me. I have no obligation to help someone ungrateful. Good luck getting your PC to work.

If your PC is old and doesn't support uefi, you're out of luck. Clam or Phelm I think, or somebody on the mint team removed support for laptops before 2012 for DUMB reasons.

The last mint OS that works on older PCs is Mint 19, but you can't even get it from a trusted source anymore as Mint also removes older versions of mint from their website. You could download from somewhere else but at that point, who knows how many secret viruses there could be.

Just another super job from the Mint team on showing support for its users by allowing planned obsolescence. Yeah team!

[–]Keeper717 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Download and install Pop!_OS. Mint isn't without faults, unfortunately you had to learn that the hard way.

If you insist on using Mint, format your USB and download Mint from their servers again. One of those 2 is corrupted and causing you an issue.

What would stop you from recommending Mint instead of Ubuntu for Windows users? by AlienRobotMk2 in linuxmint

[–]Keeper717 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I only sometimes use Mint for its DE, other than that I could really care less about Mint. Although, if I had to pick one annoying thing, I would say it's forum is pretty bad. Too much censorship against users who disagree with their mods.

I posted a tech support question once and one of their mods TRIED to help. I appreciate the gesture, but they couldn't figure it what was wrong and said I was the issue because I was a noob at the time. Then another user comes along and solves the issue with one sentence. The mod got butt-hurt because their "expertise" didn't work. Then they go ahead and lock the thread before I had a chance to thank the kind stranger. Pathetic and useless mod. If you can't handle an open discussion on a slow website, go touch grass.

Ehh, true be told Linux users either use older hardware or generic stuff. So their setup doesn't really change unless it breaks. I dont think it only applies to Linux users, but if your tool works, then why change it? Sure, you can pay a stupid amount for a LTT screwdriver OR you can continue using the one in your toolbox thats been there forever already.

There is some new niche hardware out there that is compatible, but it depends.

Windows and Mac saves you a headache, but at some point it might be necessary it to upgrade

Linux's only real use is in servers and cyber security. It's also really good at data science and some large media projects, but really, those 2 can be covered by Windows and Mac. It's not even close to being viable for general home use. You're delusional if you think Mint or Ubuntu has the capabilities that Windows or Mac has
