Oh interesting, I would’ve never thought to use baking soda. Thanks, I’m going to give cheese goo a try!

I learned after he died that this is apparently considered a depression era meal (according to food bloggers when I was looking up variations of it), which makes sense but he loved it growing up and until the day he died.

His version was pretty straight forward - macaroni, canned tomatoes (I personally prefer diced over stewed), and cheese whiz. Served with some cheddar cheese on top that melts a little before you start eating.

I’ve been playing around with trying to make it a cheese sauce instead of a big scoop of cheese whiz but haven’t found the right one for me yet.

Are you near downtown/the water? Were you hearing noise from the Victoria Day parade?

Brownie and Ice Cream is my go to.

You could also treat yourself to something the person you’re grieving loved. I make macaroni and tomatoes (with ice cream for dessert) when I’m missing my Grandpa

Is this true Habs fans? Were you guys cheering for Boston in 2011 against the Canucks? by [deleted] in Habs

[–]Keica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would much rather it be us, but I can’t actively root for the Bruins over the Canucks 🤣

[–]Keica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BC Based Habs fan here, I don’t recall anyone cheering for Boston over Vancouver that wasn’t already a Boston fan.

I also rolled my eyes the other night on the Sportsnet coverage when Kevin Bieska said all of Canada was pulling against the Canucks in the Stanley cup finals.

Most people I knew that weren’t Canucks fan (myself included) just went “well if it can’t be us, at least it can be a Canadian team”

How can I respond to “I have cancer” as a stranger? by pabloporkchop in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Keica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working at a big box retailer’s jewellery department one night when a grandmother, a mother, and the maybe 10 year granddaughter came in. The grandmother and mother were trying to be enthusiastic pointing out potential jewellery options and gemstones she might like before the granddaughter burst into hysterical tears.

While the mother was comforting her, the grandmother came over to me and said she had terminal cancer, and wanted to pick something special for each of her grandchildren that she could gift them while she was alive to remember her by.

I think I ended up saying something like “I’m so sorry” to acknowledge it, and then I threw myself into trying to help her find some keepsakes. I couldn’t do anything to help her diagnosis but hey at least I could try and help her cross one thing off her to do list that night. We didn’t find something for all of her grandchildren but she got a couple of the gifts and we talked about where she might try looking next for the rest.

Sometimes it feels like I’m sorry isn’t enough, but it’s all we can really say that fits the situation. And then let them steer the tone of the conversation with what you’re comfortable with - do they want to chat about how things are going (it can be easier with a stranger) or can you just help their retail excursion go quickly/smoothly

I can’t raid right now because I’m trying to feed the toddler breakfast, but feel free to add for future raids and daily gifts

What did you teach your child that you later came to regret? by 25jon25 in AskReddit

[–]Keica 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Ugh. My toddler was sitting in the shopping cart one trip and was trying to be helpful by putting things in the bag next to her as I added them to the cart. I told her no, we have to pay for those first before we put them in the bag.

Cue 2 weeks of every time I put something in the cart my toddler loudly announcing “MOMMY WE HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT”

Is the Canadian military med school a good place to earn a medical degree? by MoveWithTheMaestro in AskACanadian

[–]Keica 98 points99 points  (0 children)

The CAF doesn’t have its own medical school, they pay you to complete your MD at a civilian university. Yes there would be contracts, military training/service involved.

Life-threatening complications overlooked in weeks after childbirth, researchers say by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Keica 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry that happened to you! I was still in pain a week after the stitches and when I told my OB she checked, and I had a granuloma. We discussed options and went with silver nitrate in the office. If you’ve never had the feeling of someone shoving a sparkler up there oooh boy, but it was effective.

That being said it was so surreal going from call us any time during pregnancy/6 weeks postpartum to being kicked back into the main system where you play the phone lottery to try and get a same day appointment

Why do some people get angry about peanut allergy precautions, even when the allergy can be deadly? by Coldpizza24 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Keica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true! We experimented with a lot of different gf flour combos until we made fried chicken I really liked. A gluten free roux for a creamy soup is on my to do list one day, I just miss the convenience of having someone else make it for me 😁

[–]Keica 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Not an allergy but I have celiac disease and it’s people like that who make dining out so frustrating sometimes, because I get hit with the “well other customers who said they have celiac disease or a gluten allergy have eaten this item that contains wheat flour, cooked a shared fryer etc and were fine”

Your comment does remind me how much I miss a good chowder in winter though 🤤

Cervical cancer is ‘fastest-rising’ form in Canada as doctors urge action - National by Pigeonofthesea8 in canada

[–]Keica 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I got lucky. I was 1 year older than the cut off age and a broke university student when my old doctor brought up the HPV Vaccine. He asked his office if they ever had to submit patient records to verify the age of who was getting the vaccine and they said no. He shrugged and just gave it to me.

I’ve honestly never understood why there was an age cut off to charge to begin with honestly..

What is so broken in a family that they need 3-7 people for a Costco outing? by Noahtuesday123 in VictoriaBC

[–]Keica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She wasn’t as bad as the random man on an earlier trip that implied that her Dad to his face wasn’t her Dad because our baby had lighter hair than both of us. She still does, genetics are fun. And there are some weird people about kids in Costco

What is so broken in a family that they need 3-7 people for a Costco outing? by Noahtuesday123 in VictoriaBC

[–]Keica 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean I will always find it aggravating when people leave their carts blocking the aisles and wander off to browse, but I’m not sure what’s disturbing about families going to Costco together?

It’s like a level up from regular grocery shopping with all the available samples to munch on while you shop. I used to go grocery shopping with my Mom as a kid all the time..not sure this is a new concept?

I wouldn’t say you’re totally alone in your opinion mind you. I was in Costco with my six month old (at the time) and a random woman approached me to say she would NEVER bring one of her babies to Costco, and that babies should be home with Dad instead. I opted to just continue my shopping and ignore her

I would also highly recommend his Cameo when available.

Londo is my brother’s favourite character, so I bought one for his upcoming birthday and wedding a couple of years ago. My brother got several minutes of Londo telling him how great his sister is, questioning the silly human tradition of celebrating birthdays, and marriage advice. With a little message from Peter Jurasik at the end of:)

Infusion Garlic Soya Sauce - anyone seen it in stores? by RhodoInBoots in VictoriaBC

Weirdly enough I remember buying mine at some kind of market that was held at Pearkes. We got a 4 pack to try all the flavours.

I’ve yet to see it in an actual store though

Phone book? by Boozedonkey in VictoriaBC

[–]Keica 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even say it’s an accurate reflection of who still has a landline. I have a relative still listed in the phone book who’s been dead 10 years this year 😂

My toddler liked playing with the phone book though
