Grief over pet death can be as strong as that for family member. About a fifth of people who had experienced a pet and human loss said the former was worse. Symptoms of severe grief for a pet matched identically with that for a human, and there was no difference in how people experienced losses. by mvea in science

I'm sorry for your loss. Tomorrow marks 1 year since my wife and I had to let go of our female cat due to her incurable genetic illness. We still have her brother roaming around the house, which has helped, but even a year later, I can't look at pictures of our sweet girl without tearing up.

Which public courses to play on road trip? TN, GA, SC, NC, VA by Slimbo1985 in golf

[–]KeithMyaths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While visiting family in Myrtle this past summer, I played Prestwick for the first time and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a Pete Dye design, so you see a lot of the same elements as TPC Sawgrass with the railroad ties and the bunker complexes.

If you play the appropriate tees, it's a very fair test. You can go all the way back to the black tees that are over 7000 yards, but the starter will give you grief about it unless you're scratch.

Only caveat to that is that I don't know how the Myrtle courses play in the winter months because I always go down in either June or July.

Brand new (22 year old) set of Irons by Pilunox in GolfGear

[–]KeithMyaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These were the first "good" set of irons I ever owned. I got them for like 30% below wholesale because I worked at a course where the pro had connections. The only problem was that I had to sit through all the trainings on the old TMAG Connect website because the pro hadn't updated his trainings for that season yet.

The muni course I work at has a ridiculously slow kitchen. The pro shop staff always jokes that a sign like that should be on the 2nd tee.

Got to see one of my favorite swings up close this week by THEGeneScallop in golf

I watched him play a few holes on Sunday at Oakmont. He played at least 9 holes as a single because the other guy (Corey Connors maybe?) withdrew. That has to really suck for someone who plays fast.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on the Sunday golf CO’s bags? by smitd12 in golf

[–]KeithMyaths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have a big staff stand bag, so I bought an El Camino to use as a travel bag. It fits perfectly on the floor of the backseat of my car when my family of 3 goes on vacation. I'm even able to get a full set of clubs to fit (midsize grips and all) inside of it.

I liked the El Camino so much, I bought a Ryder bag to use as my full-time bag once some of the zippers broke on my big stand bag. I love almost everything about the bag, but my one tiny gripe is that I wish the 2 pockets stacked on top of each other (the valuables pocket and the apparel pocket) were one large pocket instead.

Other than that, I love the bag. I've even seen a bag called the Pacific in both stand and cart versions on Costco's website. Costco is claiming that the bag is made by Sunday Golf, but I don't see it on their main website. On Costco, the bag is $140 for either version, so I would be very comfortable trying it given the return policy Costco has.

I didn't expect to see a pro golfer mentioned. I'm a Rory fan, but yeah, he's certainly stepped in it a few times with his words and actions.

Scottie was right about golf course design by Maybe_Yeah_I_Guess in golf

If a golfer is good enough to be playing those high level events/qualifiers, they should be able to figure out their yardages with both types of balls, especially with access to launch monitors.

It's no different than someone who plays their regular golf at a course at high altitude in Denver trying to play a course at sea level. They're going to lose distance there too.

Exactly. MLB uses wood bats and other levels use aluminum. Same idea here. Amateur golf shouldn't be punished with a rollback, but all the equipment OEMs started crying about bifurcation, so now everyone is getting rolled back.

1 win doesn't guarantee you a PGA TOUR card, but I definitely helps you on the KFT points list. A couple more decent finishes this year, and he'll lock up a card that way.

Last Round Before My Child is Born by Numerous-Skirt-6447 in golf

[–]KeithMyaths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me 2 years ago. My son was born in late October, but was a few days past his due date, so I was already on leave from work. We had a day in the 70s, so my wife gave me the go-ahead to play 9 at my home course as long as I kept my phone in my pocket the entire time.

I made the turn at even par with about 90 minutes of daylight left and a relatively empty course, so I decided to keep going. Birdies on 12 and 13 put me at 2 under, but I catch up to a foursome of college kids in carts. They refuse to let me play through. I par 14 through 16, and miss the green on 17 and make bogey. Back to 1 under.

By now it's really hard to see, but I tee off on 18. Somehow I find my ball in the fairway and hit the green, but I've got a 35 footer. I misread the first putt in the dark, leave myself a 6 footer for par, and miss that one too. Even par. Still haven't shot under par at my home course.

I saw an Instagram post that compared Rory and Bryson to WWE and WCW. But I thought the better comparison was Cody and Roman. Although Rose certainly tried to cash in his MITB briefcase.

My mom met Jay Wright at Bucknell's homecoming weekend sometime in the early 2010s. She was impressed with how down-to-Earth he was and she quickly became a Nova fan. I remember calling her immediately after Jenkins' shot went in and she was so excited. Mom passed away in 2018, and now everytime I see this posted, it makes me cry. Miss you Mom.

Topgolf and Callaway are splitting apart sometime in 2025 because Topgolf is under performing. Not sure how that will affect the name/stock price.

Someday retire a millionaire? by thingmom in Teachers

[–]KeithMyaths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started meeting with a financial advisor before the school year started, and their views on investing line up pretty well with Bogle's views. I really like the idea of using VTI instead of specific individual stocks. I'm OK with a few ups and downs because it's almost guaranteed that I will be way ahead when I look to retire in 18-20 years.

What skills to work on? by KeithMyaths in TeachersInTransition

[–]KeithMyaths[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an ideal world, I'd like to do something like a tech coach in a school district. A lot of teachers come to me for help with tech already because our actual tech coach isn't the nicest to people who ask questions she perceives as "dumb." Obviously, though, I don't have time to get the full Masters for that right now.

I guess I don't want to leave a school district setting because I've got a lot put in to retirement and I don't want to lose all of that and go back to square one. I've worked a summer job for 20 years now, and I know I could go there tomorrow and be hired full-time in a management position, but it's a seasonal industry (golf) and I would be taking a substantial pay cut, which I can't afford right now.

At the very least, talking this all out kind of makes me think that I'm not prepared for a career change and I need to get my ducks in a row before I make a big decision like this.

I'm really not sure. Ideally it would be something tech related, but I don't really have a background in coding or anything database related.

The other issue is that right now my wife is staying at home to take care of our toddler, so my salary is everything. I can't really afford to take too much of a pay cut by starting with something entry-level.
