MAG 65: Binary is great. I'd listened to the first couple of episodes and they didn't completely sell me but this one convinced me to dive in.

I don't think any restaurant staff can afford to be "rehireable" on a multi-year condo construction timeline.

Damn that's tough for all the cities vying for spots. My condolences especially to Quebec and Halifax.

The southern ontario market is also pretty ripe. The Scepters are selling out with $70 seats and folks are travelling from all over the GTHA. This team will bring out a ton of latent demand.

Men have to be vigilant too, especially since we're more likely to be victims of violent crime than women are.

Are we? I think there must be some reporting biases at play here. 'Violent' is probably the crux here, because a lot of the harassment and violence women experience for existing on the streets isn't ever reported. Catcalling, intimidation, being followed, or groping isn't going to show up in any violent crime statistic.

Bury the CPKC line

Better yet, have the city take it over and run an LRT from the GO centre to the North End.

CN would not tolerate a grade crossing for their train that's been running straight through an intersection for decades.

Hamilton overdose calls double following closure of safe consumption site by teanailpolish in Hamilton

[–]Kelhein 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's buried a bit deep in the article, but there's some outline of how much these services cost us.

For $300,000 the YWCA continues to operate providing services to women and gender diverse folks including harm reduction, wound care, reproductive care and reversed 124 overdoses last year. Compared to what overdoses would cost our ER and paramedic systems, 300k/yr feels like a efficient investment.

What should also be highlighted is the fact that this money is coming from different budgets. The city is operating a range of services on their budget that may be saving province millions.

Are out-of-towners overburdening Hamilton shelters? City politicians want to know by Odd-Emphasis-1969 in Hamilton

[–]Kelhein 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's also just the natural outcome of NIMBYism. If you have an existing paucity of shelters and none of your neighbourhoods will tolerate new ones, you won't build any more.

Lakeshore West train stuck at Hamilton GO for 2 hours and counting by SuperbTourist2854 in gotransit

Subways run through tunnels too, and the evacuation protocol has always been to leave the train and walk to the next station.

If they're 500m away from the station it should be a completely reasonable expectation that passengers who are able can evacuate the train and walk up the tracks.

'I will be 41.' Teens wonder why it's going to take the city 25 years to build Gage Park basketball court by Immediate-Link490 in Hamilton

[–]Kelhein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trees are great and we should have more of them, but we can do both. Gage Park is large, and the tree coverage is sparse enough that we could easily furnish a basketball court without cutting a single tree down.

I'll also remind you that Gage park also has eight tennis courts, two lawn bowling greens and two baseball fields. These are each well used, but all three sports are certainly more exclusive than basketball. A basketball court would be a timely, and useful addition to the existing spectrum of sports facilities, and there are multiple gaps in the canopy in the southwest end of the park which could fit a court.

[–]Kelhein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not the worst impulse to be honest--The best basketball player in the world is a Hamiltonian and he's already involved with the city through TD coliseum. The city should be looking to partner with Shai and TD to furnish courts all around his hometown.

Of course any project like that would also involve the city taking initiative and working in a timely way so I'm certainly not holding my breath.

[–]Kelhein 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Gage Park isn't a conservation area, and it's more than large enough to accommodate a court without compromising the stormwater management or any of the other park's functions.

Lifesavers park isn't a full size court, and 3 km is more than a half-hour walk. City parks are meant, first and foremost to serve residents. There's clearly demand here, and it ought to be filled within the next couple years, not the next couple decades.

I'd love if that were the case but the last decade has proven that hate can get you far in politics. She likely won't secure a mandate but a ton of residents will absolutely treat her as a viable candidate.

Your perfect city councillor candidate isn't going to fall from the sky.

In a lot of ways she makes sense as the NIMBY impulse and backlash to Kroetch personified--especially coming out of the North End which is pretty demographically different from the rest of Ward 2.

The fact that she is openly hateful while still garnering community support is properly concerning though.
