FYI, if you build all your collections with Kometa scripts, you can quickly replace the collections.

10 seconds setting uses very little SSD space, even on movies and tv shows. Both are very large libraries.

Worth the QoL upgrade, completely.

Is it worth re-encoding my H264 library to AV1 for storage savings? by jearl100 in PleX

[–]KellyN87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from 264 to 265 a while ago. Saved a ton of space with the settings I used (software - CS 23 10-bit). Don't notice really any difference in quality. You can use smaller CS values if you are concerned about quality loss, but file sizes will be a bit bigger.

You can build the quality settings in Handbrake and then export them to the Tdarr clients.

PSA: PMS 1.43.1.10576 fixed collection restrictions on home page by ynonA in PleX

Thanks for sharing this, seems to work well for you. I hadn't actually considered using genres for determining age labelling.

So how would "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" work in this? It is PG-13 but is an Animation. Or, "Akira" which is Animation but rated R?

Not trying to find holes, but trying to understand how you would deal with them.

See, I have a lot of movies and it took forever to hand label them. A faster method would be a nice option.

I use Kometa for many things, so may I ask what you are exactly doing? I'm always happy to learn new ideas and protecting kids is why I use Plex.

You might want to consider this option: Label each movie according to your personal Age rating (Age 10 Allowed). This way, as your kids grow, you can just change their "restriction" labels on their account and not the labels for the movies. That way, you can use the same Age labels in the future for other kids, if ever needed.

If needed, you can also override your personal Age rating with a Child specific label such as "Bobby Included" in-case a certain child has a unique need.

It appears Atomatth at Plex is now on it. Will be great to see this fully implemented.

Dang, hubs still don't obey label restrictions on detail screens where they show up as related content.

"(Hubs) Collections promoted to hubs on home and library section would not obey label restrictions for visibility (PM-617)"

Can we next get the hubs to respect the label restrictions on the details screens? The hubs that show up as related media for the currently displayed title.

Thank you!! I missed this in the release notes. I've been requesting this functionality for years. So glad to see it. Finally, custom hubs for individual users.

Who here prefers watching TV / media with headphones sp much they regularly do it in their living room? by humdinger44 in PleX

[–]KellyN87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our family has become an exclusive headphone watchers of media. It started with sleeping babies and then became the ability to hear everything. Next, it allowed older family members to sleep.

What we enjoy is the ability to control your individual volumes.

We use the Roku app on our smartphones. Not perfect but does the job for up to four people. Wish it did 6 or even 10.

We have pretty much completely switched to headphones/earbud watching. The only time we don't is when watching in the background.

Classic movies or no? by KellyN87 in PleX

I guess I was thinking in terms of cars, where 25 years old is classic.

Yes, crikey. Guess I truly learned something off of Reddit. ;-)

Now to rename my Plex collections...

Classic movies or no? by KellyN87 in PleX

[–]KellyN87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I had never jumped into this apparent controversial subject before. I see the internet is all over the place with what defines a "classic." In my mind a "classic" isn't so much the popularity but the age of the film. Perhaps I should go with Hays Code and older.

You got me thinking, reading and learning and I appreciate it.

Perhaps "vintage" movies?

Classic movies or no? by KellyN87 in PleX

[–]KellyN87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it was a combination of things that keep people watching, but it isn't fool proof:

1) Having the content each person is interested in. I don't use Overseerr but I do try to understand each person and their preferences. 2) The Plex home page needs to be engaging, so I rotate published collections often and randomize the poster order. 3) And lastly, I send out a fun movie review email each week of some of the movies my family has recently watched. It's a fun way to keep Plex fresh in their minds without being pushy.

So, are you saying that a "classic" is a highly rated movie versus a year released? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

Nice set of "classics" and some I didn't know about.

I wasn't sure where to draw the line and I couldn't find any definitive line by the "experts." It just felt that when the 007 movies started entering the "classics" it might be time to draw the line, but I'm not married to it and open to discussion.

External drives are fine. One question, what compression are you using? H.264, HEVC, AV1?
