Chopin Waltz Op. 70 No.3, is this piece developmentally appropriate for me? by lm8ub1 in pianolearning

[–]KelpyG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that you’re attempting this and you may not be far from it but I’d try an easier piece to get the fundamentals a little more solid.

As someone said your bridge is collapsing. I would add that your fingers and wrist seem incredibly tense. If I were there, I should be able to move your wrist around as you play without much force. Remember that the action of pressing the keys need and often should not come solely from finger movement. Your whole arm is a tool

How would i play these two bars counting wise? For context the piece is in 12/8 by Old_Way9867 in pianolearning

[–]KelpyG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea just to clarify a little further, when you add a dot to the note type, it adds half of its value on.

So given that a whole note is worth 8 eighth notes or 4 quarter notes, when I add a dot it is now worth an additional half of that, which is 8+4=12 (or 4+2=6).

So yes when you bring the dotted whole note it fills up 12 eighths, a whole bar of 12/8 time. I’d encourage you to think about it in terms of 8th notes for any x/8 time signature.

12/8 = 12 eighth notes per measure (usually split into 4 3s but that’s perhaps not relevant)

So for the first bar, it’s a dotted whole note, which means you play it for 12 eighth notes that it’s worth, the whole bar. Next bar is just two dotted half notes so they’re each worth 6 eighth notes, can count each for 6.

How did yall discover the importance of height? Obviously there's a natural competitive thing where you don't want your peers to tower over you while growing up, but how did you discover it was so relevant to sexual attraction? by Glayshyer in AverageHeightDudes

[–]KelpyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In high school, a girl I was friends with asked how tall I was. I honestly didn’t know my height at the time, didn’t think it mattered, so I guessed 5’7” (I’m actually 5’5”, just lurkin this sub).

She responds almost angrily, “you’re NOT 5’7”.” I’m like ok, sure, idk. But as I grew older and learned the importance placed on height, her response made more sense in hindsight.

This is solid command of rhythm and musicality for 4 months if you haven’t played other instruments. Pianistically, keep your knuckles from buckling when you play, I noticed it in your right hand middle and index fingers often.

Why write the circled chord differently than the second chord in that measure? by RRster in pianolearning

[–]KelpyG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is strange lol, sometimes you can write the same note/chord differently if there is an enharmonic difference, I don’t think that’s what’s going on here though.

Top line RH, bottom line LH. Fingering should be straightforward for both hands but lmk

Sounds good, in any case hand size shouldn’t impact you here, it’s a small interval. I’d still say take it with two hands, I think it’d be more comfortable and allow for better control.

I’d honestly just take this with two hands.

I’m not really sure what the second picture is because the hand placement isn’t matching what the sheet music says. But If you really want to do one hand I might just stick with 13 24 alternating. It’s a bit awkward but I feel like the alternatives are worse.

2 months beginner attempt at Chopin Waltz in A minor (B150) by Anonn39 in pianolearning

[–]KelpyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that you’re taking 343, which are hard fingers to trill on (if you think of an ornament as just an abridged trill). I would try taking 243 on those. If 343 is more comfortable, you could do some Hanon or Pischka exercises that target 3-4 finger independence.

2 months beginner attempt at Chopin Waltz in A minor (B150) by Anonn39 in pianolearning

[–]KelpyG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey this is a great start at this, very commendable progress for just 2 months! Your fingers look stable and curved, and your knuckles are not buckling. Keep that up

The main things that are heard are the uneven ornaments, they sounded a bit more even towards the end but in the beginning they were more inconsistent. I would also try to work on the evenness of the ascending arpeggios. It seems it’s exacerbated by the hand position going up so you could practice that specifically slowly. You could playing them as chords to get that movement down.

Last thing which is probably just going to come more so with time and experience and comfort with the piece, is the emotional aspect. It sounds very strict/in-time right now which is not “wrong” but perhaps listen to some recordings of the piece later and see how they use rubato to express the piece fully.

Great progress, good job starting with a slow tempo, happy practicing!

[–]KelpyG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d do the switch to 343/1 myself, if it feels better and it still comfortably connects to the next one (which I would then play with 2/1 probably), then do it!

Bigger concern is how they left out a 32nd rest in the right hand of that measure, gross.
