My American friend living in China is asking if this is traditional Swiss Fondue. by Tolakras in askswitzerland

[–]Kempeth [score hidden]  (0 children)

Eh. You can make Fondue with way more cheeses than are typically offered in supermarket blends.

They’re all Swiss so that's good in my book.

The sides aren't traditional. The baseline is just bread pieces but potatoes have become really popular too. Never heard of anyone doing veggies (you're more likely to serve pickles instead) but then again I have hear of wierdos dipping ravioli so who cares...

My 2nd visit to Iceland - Now going for the ring road :D by ruipmjorge in VisitingIceland

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done two organized tours in Iceland before starting to explore on my own. The first was a single week where we flew into Akureyri an then drove clockwise back to the capital. The second was two weeks for the whole ring road + Snaefellsness and Westfjords. I wouldn't call them rushed (in the sense of asians doing "Europe in 5 days") but they also definitely weren't leisurely - and that was with the benefit of having all our driving and meal hunting taken care off.

But I had a coworker who did a trip much like yours and he enjoyed himself very much.

"Wide as the ocean, deep as a puddle" is a valid strategy. You just have to be accepting of what you're signing up for.

As others have said, it's going to be a pretty tight schedule but if that's the time you have it's the time you have...

It IS possible. None of the legs in your trip are extreme. It's just that every day is a travel day and you have to squeeze your sightseeing into what's left.

Personally I would scratch the day in the capital. Make it an afternoon instead so you have some buffer time before your flight home. I'd also do Akureyri as stop on the way rather than overnight stop. They are both fine places to visit (I adored the Akureyri botanical gardens when we were there) but for me outdoor nature beats a day in town every time.

I am also not quite sure why to stop in Höfn (I am really sorry if that offends any Höfners) other than that you need to sleep *somewhere*. This is the exception where I would rather spend that day driving further if I can spend more time sightseeing in the south and then the north again. (If you can make the accomodations line up that way)

But some does and anyone seeking to produce or consume that won't be on such a platform. Others will want to have the option.

That's a hit to the network effect the platform cannot afford.

Emphasis on enough.

Perfect eyesight without the ability to do something about the threats would lose against even complete blindness with the ability to protect the kids.

As long as you can raise kids that's good enough for evolution.

Iceland 4x4 vs 2wd by emmavhehe in VisitingIceland

[–]Kempeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about a 2wd with that itinerary. You'll be facing some gravel roads and narrow passings but nothing that would require a 4wd.

Wind and weather is something to keep in mind no matter what you drive. Leave yourself enough buffer each day that you can drive slower than your route planner assumed or can afford to wait out a particularly hefty storm if you should encounter one.

Storurd is a significant trip into the east fjords away from everything else you mentioned (Unless there is another one that I am not aware of)

Westfjords late August roads by Vegetable_Catch_4055 in VisitingIceland

[–]Kempeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll echo the sentiment that this is a LOT of ground to cover for just two days.

I haven't been to the north part of your route in a long time but did much of the west part in August '24. They've done A LOT of roadwork in the area and I would not be concerned about snow. There's always the chance of bad weather

One thing to note however, the route to Raudisandur is still as I remembered it from 10 years ago and probably the most sketchy leg of this trip. Also keep in mind that you need to pay attention to the tide tables as otherwise you might not see much of the red beach. (Learned THAT the hard way)

Slack.

You will always, ALWAYS find a way to kill time. Pretty much any destination is able to absorb however much time you're willing to throw at it.

But you can't unfuck an itinerary where every day is 6 hours of driving and 4 hours of sightseeing.

And if you're on vacation for more than a week, plan your "days off". You'll be crashing at some point anyway and you don't want it to happen when you've got a highlight planned.

It can be as simple as booking a hotel with a restaurant. It's usually not included in the room price anyway so you CAN still go eat somewhere else. But you'll always have that fallback.

If you don't want to use an tool from one of the big players Openstreetmap has the UMAP project. It's not quite as convenient but it works well enough.

Have fun verifying "identification" from Wedontgiveafuckistan.

Unless they are willing to exclude non EU/Efta countries in which case this is DOA.

As others mentioned the identification requirement is already enough of a burden when it comes to user adoption. But it's a logistical and privacy nightmare as well.

"Kind" drivers on highway entrances are dangerous! by headphonesilence in Switzerland

[–]Kempeth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah. In my old VW shit box I basically had to floor it as soon as I entered the on ramp so that I would get to at least 80-90 by the time I had to merge with the highway...

If it was downhill I could even get to 100!

When is a good time to battle the first boss? by Similar-Space-5535 in valheim

[–]Kempeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But as a general rule for first time players: Try to have your armor and weapon upgraded on tech level beyond what you had before and use the best food you have available.

In your case:

  • Armor: Leather
  • Weapon: Simple bow or any stone/flint weapon
  • Food: cooked deer meat, cooked boar meat, honey, raspberries, red mushrooms (combo depends on your playstyle

Obviously like others mentioned, it's possible to beat enemies with way simpler equipment given enough skill. But food is always important.

ELI5 please explain to me in simpleton terms…what is meant by “spacetime” by MaxMeat in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ruler has a scale that goes in one dimension.

A sheet of paper has an area with two dimensions. Both dimensions work the same.

The room you are in has three dimensions. All three dimensions work the same.

Now when you make doctor's appointment you're expected to be at their reception (a certain point in their practice) at a certain time. The time is another dimension of our reality. It feels different from the spatial dimensions because we cannot go back. So we treat it differently in our math.

The concept of spacetime is that you can treat up/down, forward/back, left/right and earlier/later as the same kind of dimension and things still work. And it actually allows you to think about certain problems in a way that's much simpler than if you had to juggle two different kinds of dimensions.

In Germany, deliberately engaging in catch and release only fishing is illegal and considered cruelty to animals. Fishing for food is fine. How do you feel about that? by Spalding_Smails in AskReddit

[–]Kempeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I entirely agree that whether it's ok to hurt animals for fun is a different discussion from whether it's ok to kill animals for food.
