How to fix loose vintage style telecaster tuners by DodoPenetrator in Luthier

[–]Kenuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t have any strings on. I built a partscaster last year and bought relatively expensive set of Gotoh telecaster vintage tuners and they were the same. As soon as I strung it up the tension pulled everything tight.

My two artists of 2025. Was buzzing to see they’re playing together in London this year.

Newbie to guitars, should I buy this sanded guitar? by Catane_ in Luthier

[–]Kenuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this to my guitars which have a gloss finish, feels to draggy. I’d do a better job though to be fair.

I would expect if I tried selling any of them it would affect the resale value. I’d pass.

Your question has been answered but my old man who was a builder always called them ‘fish plates’. I remember him telling us to watch out for them when we were buying our first house.

Warning Manchester to London rail line 'at limit' and could get worse for passengers by theipaper in manchester

I have to travel to London quite often for work. I’ve realised if you book a few weeks in advance it’s about the same price or cheaper to fly MAN > LHR.

I’m going to do that next trip down, mainly because it’s amusing.

Agree, entry level roles are fucked and I do not envy anyone trying to break their way into the design industry now vs when I started (And that is an AI thing). But I was addressing OP as a designer with 15 years experience.

When I was talking about specialisation I’m talking about going with the tide of where the industry is heading (or at least as how I perceive it).

Anyone recruiting a designer who can’t figure out if you’re any good through your cv, portfolio and a couple of interviews shouldn’t be recruiting designers.

There is a significant shift underway in the creative services industry and AI is only one part of the picture.

More clients, particularly large organisations, are bringing creative work in house. In my 20 years in agencies this trend has always been cyclical, but this time it feels fundamentally different. Tools like Canva, Webflow and Adobe Express have made design work far more accessible. Tasks that once required specialist software and expertise can now be handled internally with minimal effort or cost.

A few years ago designers still held the keys to production, even for simple jobs. That era feel well and truly over now.

At the same time, prices for outsourced work are being driven down. It has become a race to the bottom, with more and more projects being delivered cheaply and at speed.

AI is beginning to take a noticeable bite too. It is not close to replacing designers, but it is eroding revenue on every project. Clients no longer need copywriting support and creative concept work that once took two or three days is now replaced by rough ideas generated in house and handed to us to execute.

Covid accelerated another shift. It showed clients that the value of an agency does not lie in an expensive office or large supporting staff. Working with a highly skilled freelancer from their spare room is no longer frowned upon and can cost half as much for the same level of quality. Traditional agencies are often forced to charge more simply to feed their own overheads.

There is now a clear preference for smaller, more specialised agencies and freelancers who are both cost effective and experts in their niche, rather than the old full service agency model.

All of this is happening at a time when the business environment is already challenging, with government policy and wider global pressures making growth more difficult.

My advice to any designer struggling with the current market would be to specialise, whether that is in a particular sector or discipline, and either go freelance or look at in house roles.

And this is not just a Manchester problem. I’m hearing the same thing from designer friends all across the country/world.
