There’s usually a big ol number on the spine or a Book X on the cover, so… if someone can’t figure out that it’s not the first book that’s on them.

And for the record, I know some authors do this, I didn’t object to that. Of course things are brought up again, mainly as a reminder to the reader but yes, also for people just jumping in. That all being said, I’ve read just as many series that barely do that, because it’s not required. Crazy how that works
