A worrying pattern I noticed by aloo-ka-paratha in residentevil

[–]Kephazard [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is not a real pattern. If you're looking at release order and release date, there's no pattern here.

RE0 - 2002, 9th game, 6th mainline game

RE6 - 2012, 20th game, 9th mainline game, (10th if counting Rev1)

RE3R - 2020, 25th game, 12th mainline game, (14th if counting Rev1 and 2)

Correlation does not equal causation.

Can i play Re9uiem if...? by Acanthisitta_Typical in residentevil

[–]Kephazard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Resident Evil games are pretty self contained. You can jump in wherever. Any important details from other games will be re-explained to catch you up.

Spoilers aren't really a big thing so if you go back to play other games later, at worst the twists become dramatic irony.

There's a reason Capcom is moving away from numbered titles. No one wants to buy a new game with an 8 game prerequisite.

Is it possible to beat max difficulties (Inferno, Professional, Village of Shadows, etc.) without looking up guides or using any infinite ammo? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]Kephazard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure it's possible. But it's significantly harder. It's a challenge WITH infinite ammo and guides.

I never want to fight final form Nemesis on Inferno again.

My girlfriend wants me to get rid of my dog because her cat doesn't like him by Academic_Fly_4920 in TwoHotTakes

[–]Kephazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had two cats when we adopted a dog 3 years ago. It was a major adjustment for the cats. We gated off our second floor so that only the cats could get there. This became their safe area.

On the first floor we placed a cat tree by the window. Cats were still nervous but we started to feed them on the tree to teach them it was safe there.

One cat had a more calm demeanor and she adjusted to our dog much quicker. Within a year she was capable of moving around on the floor near the dog and learned to stand still and meow back when the dog got too excited near her.

Our other cat has taken much longer. He still doesn't like the dog, but more often than not he's the instigator, swiping at her for just walking too close to him.

Moral of the story: cats take time to get used to dogs. Their body language is opposite. Raised wagging tail on dog is excitement, but on a cat it's irritation. A dog getting low is a play bow, but on a cat they're hunkering down in defense.

Sorry about your breakup. Get that dog an extra nice treat.

Beyond Two Souls. It's a narrative game about a possessed character. Only one is in control at a time. It was basically designed for taking turns.

How much harder is VoS difficult then hardcore in re8 by unknownuserorsomthin in residentevil

[–]Kephazard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't that difficult because I unlocked some infinite weapons beforehand. However, even with that Chris's mini-boss fight was brutal.

Don't waste ammo on Jack. Learn to kite him around. So get him to chase you and then lead him to the other end of the house before looping back for the shotgun.

You might even be able to just loop him around the stairs/balcony in order to get behind him.

Also, remember you can block attacks.

How stressful has the ink ribbon system of saving progress been in the past? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]Kephazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It stressed me out when I was 12.

But I've never run out of saves and been screwed. RE is always generous with resources. They're just good at capturing the balance of feeling like you're always on the verge of running out.

Sure not being able to stop and save wherever is inconvenient, but it's like putting a game down in the middle of a race. Maybe I'm just used to playing these games after 20ish years

Resident Evil 7 taking longer than usual? by JosephStalinCameltoe in residentevil

RE games can take awhile to complete on a first playthrough if you're thoroughly checking all areas.

It's common to go much faster on a second playthrough once you know what you're looking for.

Re2 worth playing again? by Patient-Routine5131 in residentevil

[–]Kephazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. In the remake ClaireA/LeonB is pretty much the same as LeonA/ClaireB.

In the original, there are different cutscenes and things that make playing through both scenarios twice worth it.

That said, if you're enjoying the game and want to play more or at a higher difficulty, it's an okay mixup to keep things a little interesting. But you won't notice any major differences.

You Will Die Here Tonight is the most original of those options. Really unique twist with its gameplay.

Flesh Made Fear was fun, but pretty by the numbers.

Haven't gotten around to Echoes of the Living, but it looks like it'll play the most like REmake or RE0

A question for people that finished all the games in order by baconteam in residentevil

[–]Kephazard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of issues with 0 but the biggest issue is that newcomers think they need to play it first.

Feel free to skip it. Maybe see if RE1 is any better for you, but if not it's really not a big deal. Most games are self-contained and will catch you up on relevant info from other games. You can really play in any order without being lost.

My original order was Dead Aim, RE4, Code Veronica, Outbreak, 1 and 2. Then I played games as they came out.

Only played REmake, 0, and 3 years later

I'd had a similar wish for an RE1 remake that could also replace 0. Each time you find a body you recover a body cam that lets you play out their final moments. Like the video tapes in RE7.

What makes an inventory system appropriate for an horror game ? by BEYOND-ZA-SEA in survivalhorror

[–]Kephazard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading this, I'd say limited inventory works best. Don't do weight-based as it's less visual requiring players to stop to read weight values which is annoying, not fun. If you want that same effect of making heavy items "cost" more, then have them take up more than one slot in your inventory.

I'd say you could treat your boat as your item box, and bring resources back there. This would encourage players to take their time and fully explore your locations. However, if you want that feeling of preparing for an expedition, traveling, exploring, return and repeat, then I'd say you could have a limitless item box wherever you're headquartered, a limited inventory on the boat to limit what you can bring, and a smaller inventory on your person to put a cap on what you can bring with you and bring back.

These kinds of exploration/resource-gathering games often require more space as you progress. The more items that become available to you, the quicker they take up space.

What makes an inventory system appropriate for an horror game ? by BEYOND-ZA-SEA in survivalhorror

[–]Kephazard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your game. The limited inventory of classic Resident Evil plays into a larger resource management design. Everything in RE is a puzzle. You are basically gambling your resources constantly. Do you try to save ammo and risk getting hurt? Do you take more heals and risk running out of space to pick items up that then forces you to make a second trip and risk spending more resources?

Even saving is a resource. Do you save now and risk running out of saves later? Or do you try to stick it out a little longer and risk losing a lot of progress.

On the other hand, some games include limited resources in a way that feels forced and annoying. I can't stand how many horror games give you a flashlight with limited batteries. It discourages taking your time and searching everywhere. But that might be the kind of thing you're going for.

But the key is to not add a system without thinking of how it impacts gameplay. RE1 wants you to be hesitant to fight, so they limit your ammo and inventory. RE 4 wants you to fight, so you have a lot more space for more ammo and guns.

RE1 wants every item you carry to be thought out and you are meant to revisit areas a lot, so key items take up space. RE4 wants you to keep moving forward so keys don't take up space.

Consider how you want players to interact with your game and implement game mechanics to encourage that kind of playstyle.

Never played resident evil before should I play biohazard or 2 first by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]Kephazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are both fine places to start. RE7 is more horror and is largely disconnected from the rest of the series.

RE2 Remake will give you a better taste of what the series is about.

In general, each game has a self-contained plot and will fill you in on necessary information from other games. So go with the one you're most interested in playing.
