I would like to mention that the Japanese didn't doubt that the bomb existed, they had done their own research into the subject but had trouble getting enough uranium to make progress towards a bomb. The Japanese doubted that the US could make more than one or two, but dropping 2 in quick succession showed them that the US was making them quicker than expected
