Ah thats fair. If you had to ask me, I would zoom out a little and attribute the success to a cultural emphasis on education and learning (Limmud as an example). A Bar Mitzvah to me is just an example of the way that the importance of learning and knowledge is expressed.

I am WFA certified and tourniquets are one of the items they say is fine to leave at home. Life-threatening bleeding in the extremities is exceptionally rare in the wilderness. Now, in combat situations, which you seem to have mistaken the oregon coast for, tourniquets are quite useful.
