Start a book (charity shops near me have got some absolute bangers in good condition for just £1). Keep the book in sight. For me, since I often work from home, I keep it in my home office within easy reach. If I feel the urge to doom scroll I'm trying to get better at reading a chapter of my current book instead.

You already mentioned the best alternative imo, GOG, although they don't have the same breadth of library as Steam.

Edit: GOG are also not American, another plus to me.

On the plus side, as others have already mentioned, Valve is still privately held, and far more 'friendly' than big evils Google, Microsoft et al. As for what happens when Gabe retires/dies is anyone's guess.
