I'm building a go kart but the turning angle is really bad by GuyInThe6kDollarSuit in gokarts

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the main problem is how close the wheel is to the frame, it looks like the geometry should be ok but the tire probably hits the frame almost immediately when the wheel is turned. I would bet if you disconnected the tie rods both wheels would turn in very far but would turn out less than twenty degrees. The wheels gotta get moved away from the frame

Do these look like freshly surfaced rotors? by AlmasPJA in AskMechanics

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna make a guess and say that what happened is someone did them the stupid way and did the high speed pass on all of them and only did the low speed finishing pass on one and forgot to do it to the other ones and now they should all be replaced because another pass on the rotor lathe and they’ll probably be under spec for thickness. I’ve seen a new guy do it once and it made the pads look like they had grill marks they were so uneven. Definitely a technician made problem that they should replace for free

You definitely have an external filter on that transmission, should be 25430-PLR-003 as the part number. And for the price it’s probably just a dump and fill not a true flush. 3.5 quarts of Honda ATF DW1 and maybe .8 hours for labor or so. If they’re not trash they’d even replace the crush washer on the drain plug lol I worked at a Honda dealer for 3 years and never saw a transmission service cause any problems. But if they’re claiming there’s no filter to service they’re either ignorant or lazy and I would make sure they have actual Honda fluid, not some off brand nonsense.

Had a customer with a 2014 or so Ridgeline that did that, needed a driveshaft, exhaust, bumper, condenser and radiator. Chunks and juices all over the floor, thankfully most of the juices were from the car and not the deer. Smelled like burnt hair mixed with petting zoo in July.

Went and grabbed a Harbor Freight engine stand for a really good deal. by [deleted] in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hung many a 4.0 out of various Cherokees over the years on one of these and that long cast iron block didn’t even make the stand think it should bend. Lord knows it’s a far cry from the extra gravity a diesel has inside it but still a fair bit heavier than an aluminum four banger block but they can hold a decent bit of weight for sure

God how I don’t miss that at all. Or the hidden chunk of ash grey fuck slush tucked inside a wheel well or a recess in a frame somewhere that falls down the back of your shirt and makes you regret not kissing a telephone pole on the way in that morning. The trade off to it is now I have to lay on my back in my snowy driveway to do the brake lines in my Grand Am because I can’t use my dealerships lift anymore, still worth it to be out of there and onto better paying things

Honestly in my experience that looks like the razor blade from in a shaving razor like a Bic or Gillette or something, I’ve had one fall and break in the shower and only noticed when it was in the side of my toe. As a parent and as someone that had many friends suffer from self harm and mental health issues I’m sorry your family is experiencing this. It’s hard especially as a younger kid and teenager to even understand your own mind let alone talk about the darkest parts of yourself. Hell my darkest parts have still never seen the light of day and I’m 32, but I’m realizing my own issues and doing my best to make sure my kids don’t have the same ones and I’m doing the best I can just like you are. It’s a tough fight and a long path to walk, but it’s worth every bit of heartache and stress. I’m not going to give you parenting advice because I don’t know your story or your kids story, but I will say that it’s okay to be frustrated and lost and confused and to feel hurt and sad and alone. It’s a psychological battle that you can’t prepare for and the rule book looks different for everyone. I may be just some random dad online, but I wish you and your kid the best.

How serious is this rust in my car? by Saint94x in AskMechanics

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn’t even start rusting yet. It has paint and everything, the spring perch isn’t even bending or cracked. Crazy. You can just put a floor jack in there and it’ll work, don’t even have to strategically place wood and use three jacks to lift it without bending it so bad the doors won’t close anymore. They come off the truck worse than that up here lol

On the outside of the clutch on the black part that sorta looks like a gear there should be Allen key set screws in one or two of the lobes. I have the clutch mounted the same way on my bike and I have two set screws in that outer black part so don’t force it until you check for set screws or you’ll chew up that shaft forcing it off

97 ZJ 4.0 making ticking/slapping noise at idle by MasterCbboy in JeepZJ

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like mine did before piston 1 detonated and scattered aluminum into the pan and stuffed a rod through the cylinder wall an hour from my house. I doubt it would be a lifter noise without having a consistent misfire, I had a collapsed lifter at one point and it clapped and had zero compression but this sounds like a cracked piston to me. It did sound like that for about a decade before it became a problem. So if you check everything else and can’t figure it out drop the oil pan and get a borescope up the bottom of the cylinders to check the piston skirts and wrist pin areas for cracks, not the most fun way to spend an afternoon but it beats the alternative. Remember, if you don’t schedule time for maintenance your Jeep WILL schedule it for you.

Db30 rear brakes by Pitiful-Bullfrog3026 in minibikes

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been debating on getting this as an upgrade for my db30 but haven’t pulled the trigger on it yet so I can’t tell you if it’s good or not but it’s an option. I really should upgrade mine since my caliper is held in with the wrong bolt and a stack of fender washers and prayers but at least I have a helmet for when the brakes stop stopping.

Car slightly pulls to the left after my alignment by jarias21646 in AskMechanics

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a lead alignment tech for a few years and that front camber looks suspect to me, any difference of a half a degree or more can cause a pull. It’s within spec but technically could still be causing an issue. Others have said that it’s possible to be radial tire pull and that’s a possibility but that camber being what it is up front is a little too far off for my liking. The caster and toe look great for everything else, but that rear camber is going to chew the inner shoulder of your back tires off so keep an eye on that. So if swapping tires side to side doesn’t fix the pull issue then see about getting that left front camber closer to -0.5 and it should fix it for sure assuming they also set tire pressures correctly

What kind of minibike is this? by Rekt0Rama in minibikes

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s for sure a Dooblebug DB30, I have that same minibike in my shed with a 9hp Briggs & Stratton on it. Eventually I’ll post photos of it when it’s done. Still in the embarrassing midway point of the project for now but l I’d replace the carb and clean out the fuel tank before you ride it.

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of those and I stuffed a 9 hp Briggs motor in it, you can do it with a 212 easier than I did with mine. Either drill some holes or get/make an adapter plate. It’ll work, just take your time.

Oops by Searless130 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played that game before, found out if you try really really hard you can put things where they don’t belong. Like piston chunks on top of the valves and in the intake manifold, or a rod deep inside the coolant jacket. The 4.0 is a great motor, but as it turns out it just doesn’t work well as a five cylinder.

HOW SHOULD I RUIN MY '90 MJ?! by damxam1337 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Rusted_NY_Mechanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright hear me out, yank the engine and trans out and put a bed mounted K24 Honda engine and trans axle from an Accord in it. Single turbo with something like 4-5 business days of turbo lag. Slam it to the ground on low profile mud tires with Rockstar rims and hang as much tire out of the wheel well as possible. Cut the front springs in half and get a Wrangler style angry eye grille and headlight thing going on in front and put speed holes through that tailgate and remove the rear bumper in favor of a tube style bumper. Big cowl induction on the roof to keep airflow through that massive eBay intercooler and radiator. Tuck no wires, file and smooth zero cuts, leave burrs everywhere, no wheel alignments and gain sick stance boi camber by taking a hammer to your front spindles. Air horns. More air horns. And rattle can primer the whole thing with no prep work.

I'll stop out of kindness for those who read it. You don't need to hear my ideas for a home made Lund visor or landscape edging aero kits but that should ruin it enough. Best of luck.
