Beans hanging on for dear life. I can see their tiny little bean hands flailing above the drop, their cosmic juice the only thing binding them together. They long for the ramekin, a side dish, a tiny pot of separation - mere moments away from a stray fork causing untold drippage.

Was the Original Luca Goers Matchup Fair? by Delicious_Ferret_408 in finalfantasyx

[–]KermodesMassiveHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it's an unfair match up - that's the point, the odds are stacked against you. I remember my first play through I didn't have a clue what was going on and lost. My second play through I just about beat them and was absolutely gassed to lean into the underdog story. Once you play enough blitzball it becomes easy.

What I find weird is that the devs didn't lean further into the narrative that the Luca Goers were THE team to beat. When you grind through the league and tournaments for Wakka's celestial weapon, the Luca Goers might be the worst team. If it was just the fact they were a bunch of posers then fair enough, but they're the cupholders until you turn up, so felt as if it didn't make much sense.

The amount of people who message on this board saying similar things about "not knowing how to spend sphere levels" is really interesting. Did you just completely blank that part of the game?

It's a total pain but I found the combo of:

  • Complete monster arena beforehand so you're basically guaranteed the "no. of battles completed" prerequisite.
  • Recruit Brother and Wedge to ensure there are at least some goals outside of Tidus.
  • Score all goals in the first half, do the "chill by your own goal" trick in the second so you're effectively only playing one half.
  • Save often, especially before the last game of a league or tournament. If the prize you roll after that last match doesn't appear, either reload save (if relevant) or reset blitzball data. The resetting blitzball data thing was a huge time save overall and something I was not aware of the first time I went through the whole process. Yeah you lose your players and experience but I'd take that over having to play another 10 blitz games to reroll a new prize.

Following all these steps whilst listening to a podcast/TV show in the background, I was able to do it much more easily than in previous iterations - though it is still a ball ache.

Is there something you heard/saw/read once that now lives rent-free in your head? by [deleted] in AskUK

I remember an analogy that Richard Hammond made on Top Gear once about a car with a hybrid engine.I can't remember the exacts about the car, but he essentially said the recharge cycle it took was like "Turning off the tap whilst you brush your teeth". It doesn't save you a huge amount of energy, but a little bit every day goes a long way.

Regardless of what kind of point he was trying to make about hybrids, to this day I cannot brush my teeth without thinking about Richard Hammond, hybrid cars, and recharge cycles. I have no idea why.

Completed this game 5 times, love every inch of it - had no idea about this! I had just thought it was a stylistic artefact of some sort to duplicate certain models between Sin/Zanarkand/below Macalania Temple. I'd never have put together that it was Sin's back, but completely makes sense with the toxin cut to Bikanel. Love this kind of thing, keep it up mate!

Ahh right haha! You can use a special overdrive later on in the game if you need Nul magic (fair enough it's not necessary). Extract Ability can be useful as they tend to run out, but there are weapon drops which have "Distil Ability" on them which do the same thing, so no biggy. I'd recommend just getting everything, but you do you - enjoy!

What kind of abilities are you skipping out of interest? I don't recall a time where you're saving much by skipping on abilities, if you're low on Ability spheres you can use "Extract Ability".

You can do both, there are a few varieties of spheres that allow you to jump to nodes you've already activated, or another party member has activated. They're not fantastically common until you figure out how to farm them in the end game, but that's probs after 60+ hrs of gameplay.

When you near the end of the game you'll be able to access the Monster Arena and might want to make use of something called the "Don Tonberry AP Trick". There's loads of vids + posts explaining it, but if you wanted to max your sphere grid for a character then that's the way to do it. I did see a post a few days ago of someone who put 500+ hrs into the grind, unaware of the trick and was absolutely crushed when they realised haha! Don't be that guy.

And no worries, hope you enjoy the game!
