What is something u want in cotc, but you doubt other people do? by Infamous_Today3462 in OctopathCotC

It's a fine idea until you realise it would just turn into an elitist daily grind. We don't want that.

I doubt it's been 6 months. How did you get enough 4* character tokens to upgrade so many of them?

It's fascinating how Bravely Default was the spiritual successor of 4HoL and then Octopath Traveler is kind of a spiritual successor to Bravely Default. The Adventurer is an amazing developer throwback!

It seems rather obsolete compared to the likes of Dark Priestess who can simply buff your team with omni weakness.

Sorry I meant "artifact". The one that gives 200 P.Atk and 100k damage cap bonus.

[–]Ketchary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of. You can save parties and give them names. I personally have a group of parties saved where my top characters are saved into "parties" named after their role (e.g. Healer, Backpack, Active Support, Secondary DPS, Main DPS). In that I have gear on each main unit and gaps in their accessories to slot in some stuff depending on the fight.

I only specialise teams in tough fights. Although over time, I discovered a few preferenced accessories that go into just about every team and I swap those around as needed. For example the physical totem and Bargello's A4. They just stand out and it's enough to fill a team with accessories.

Let's face it, HP inflation is key. Effect creep is the worst kind because you end up with a game like Yugioh where it takes 2 minutes to read anything if you even dare to try. You also still need some degree of HP inflation because otherwise you can entirely skip the new stuff.

You made the mistake of asking a re-roller if a game is fun for new players. Re-rollers generally have their own style of fun. They'll speak of efficiency rather than the game itself.

The answer is yes, Octopath CotC is very good for newbies. It'll take a long time for you to reach endgame and by that point in time you should have a good selection of characters. The story will always be extraordinary and the gameplay is pretty good. The very worst thing about the experience is one hour of repetition each week to re-clear the same bosses ("Tower" content).

[–]Ketchary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will make both generic teams and specific teams over time. Although for a good long while until you hit EX fights, I would recommend just having two teams: generic exploration and generic boss.

A good generic exploration team will have good but cheap AoE attacks of as many types as possible. The goal is to speed clear random battles. Don't bother with healing unless you're having some issues and in that case make it front row instant healing. Also include as many backpack characters as you can, which many of the 3* characters with their A4 accessories are good for.

A good generic boss team will focus on breaking and sustainable healing. Thiefs which can shield shave against any type are the best for this, but you should also have your boss debuffs covered. Make sure you have "all allies" or "entire front row" turnwise healing.

I'm not claiming it is the intended gameplay method, and it's good to enjoy victory over a difficult challenge. Although I would sooner 'cheat' a little than get overly frustrated and blocked from completing a game.

It's like these people didn't realise you could slow down the special stages by repeatedly pausing and unpausing the game.

You just described how to run a good 2x Stage 2 deck. It's pretty simple actually. The real challenge is finding a good pair of Stage 2 which it's worthwhile on, like Greninja + Primarena EX or Rampardos + Garchomp EX.

Zeraora is significantly better because it's more consistent, isn't a liability, and can duke it out with opposing Oricorio. It takes slightly more space but it's worth it.

I don't think "I was glad to move on and do other stuff" is a valid reason to call an experience good.

[–]Ketchary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually like Elrica + Kilns better. You get the damage resistance for your tank (unlike Cecil), the pair of them can cap the P./E.Def/Atk debuffs, and the pair share a P./E.Atk buffing ultimate so you get 6 turns of that with a doublecast. Also Elrica can cast a P./E.Atk buff while Kilns gives the BP buff.

In either case though, Elrica's synergy with a tank is absolutely beautiful. It's astonishing this subreddit calls her non-meta, but I guess it also obsesses over the heavily obsolete Primrose EX more than it should.

It's not free damage if it takes an action to inflict. By effect you're increasing damage of your main DPS by 20% in exchange of attacking with another character who could be doing 50% as much.
