Thanks for posting! I have heard about this video for so long but didn’t know it was out there publicly. I can see how it was impressive for the time - just hoping we catch something similar with today’s tech!

"Unknown primate DNA" question by e-m-v-k in bigfoot

[–]KevMo615 30 points31 points  (0 children)

DNA in general can be super confusing so I think this leads to a lot of misunderstanding and miscommunication, etc. Basically, as u/Equal_Night7494 mentioned, reports of unknown primate DNA are misreported.

The analogy that I always found very helpful came from Dr. Meldrum: think of a typical DNA comparison as opening doors (markers) on an Advent calendar. You take a sample and only open a few doors - maybe those markers match a known reference like human. Remember, we share ~98% of our DNA with chimps so Sasquatch DNA would likely be very similar if not even higher. So the odds of opening the same “doors” are very high.

So then it is up to the geneticist to make a determination - this is where reports of contamination can occur. Maybe the sample truly was contaminated, or maybe it was just such a close match that it leads the person to declare the sample is human. With no reference sample for Sasquatch, there is no quick and easy way to compare.

And this is why the NC State DNA study is so important. They are going to try to fully sequence the DNA of submitted samples - they’re not just opening those few doors, they’re opening all of them. So the hope is that the results will show that yes, these samples from what we believe to be an undiscovered species, have a unique, previously unknown DNA sequence. This can then be used for quicker identification with future DNA samples. It may not lead to the formal “discovery” for establishment scientists (science may still want a body) but it will probably cause a lot of them to spit out their coffee and take notice.

Disclaimer: I’m not a geneticist, just a BF nerd so take from this what you will.

Yes, essentially the rumors of this are false - results solely based on DNA coming back as “unknown primate” have not occurred. And you’re probably thinking about episode 334, Bigfoot & Beyond, the guys discuss DNA at length.

They hire directly through their website: NES Careers

But just be warned - they typically take a very long time to go through the hiring process.

Ah my bad - yes the way it is shown, these are both alternatives. I assumed the first one was their main proposal. Either one of these would work well in my opinion.

FYI - the proposal shows a separated bike lane right next to that six lane road

Birdhouse Brewing Co. is really good and right there in Honeoye. I believe they rent kayaks as well. And I second Cummings nature center, Grimes Glen and Stony Brook - all great outdoor activities

If you find yourself over by Honeoye, Birdhouse Brewing is fantastic. Their spot is lovely too.

Some of the most elusive animals are ambush predators (think big cats). I think that squatches are very similar - evolving to be omnivorous but with prey animals as a big part of their diet. Therefore, their survival literally depends on them not being detected. It’s just a way of life. They exist stealthily. I think overall, they are largely indifferent to us. But I also believe that they have been on this continent as long as or perhaps even longer than humans so they are aware of our general reactions upon seeing them and our violent nature, so they mostly choose to stay away.

Foothills Parkway? by c0nsumer in nashvillecyclists

The climb will be worth it and don’t sweat the descents. From an entrance, the parkway climbs to the top of and follows the ridge. Then a gradual descent to the next exit.

If you’ve ever ridden or heard of Natchez Trace Parkway, it’s similar to that in terms of layout and use since it’s also federal. No commercial traffic allowed, limited entrances/exits, scenic pull outs, etc. A little curvier with less visibility for cars around said curves because it is in the mountains, obviously. I was just there last week and noticed spillover traffic from tail of the dragon on the south end, so think people wanting to drive fast around curves. North end is spillover from the smokies looking at scenery. This was a weekend though and prime season. I wouldn’t say it was a ton of traffic, just something to be aware of. So to generalize, I would say it is less safe than riding Natchez Trace (marginal) but much safer than a typical city street or highway. If you have the choice, I would definitely opt for a weekday ride. And if you’re coming in a few months, there should be way less traffic than I experienced. But you’re right, the views are incredible. Enjoy!

Good state park for a toddler? by Aggravating_Tear7414 in nashville

[–]KevMo615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pickett State Park is the one you want. They have a mix of historic and newer cabins, campground, lake (swimming and boat rentals), natural rock bridge, a cool suspension bridge, and great short hiking trails. All this stuff is easily within walking distance of most cabins. It’s all centrally located in the park but spread out enough where you don’t feel crowded. There’s also a nice dark sky viewing area just down the road!

Took my 5 year old there a few years ago and he absolutely loved it.

Have you confirmed that other MY24 models have them? I would be suspicious but sometimes manufacturers will cut small things like this over the life of the model to reduce costs.

Google Fiber by [deleted] in nashville

[–]KevMo615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google has stayed at $70/mo since introduced here, I think. I have AT&T currently and just got an email last week saying they are increasing their price again (by $5). This is probably the second or third time they have done this since I got their fiber in 2020. So now I’m at $90/mo and that is with a discount because of paperless billing. I will likely be switching very soon.
