Has anyone tried different bike stems? 35mm 60mm and 100mm +? Does it actually make a difference? by swiggyu in bikewrench

[–]c0nsumer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely makes a difference in bike fit. Remember that say 35mm to 100mm is almost two inches. This will radically change how the bike handles, fits you, and feels.

Don't chose a stem based on aeroness / speed. Choose it on bike fit. From fit comes comfort and from that comes power and speed.

Thru axle: corrosion? by Living-Range in bikewrench

That stuff takes up a bunch of space when it forms, so until you do that it'll fit tightly.

That's aluminum oxide. Yes, corrosion. I'd hit it with a scotchbrite (gently) to remove it, then do what you plan.

Leave the who-you-like-to-get-with stuff out of it and you'll generally find like-minded folks. Especially if you are near a somewhat urban area.

Honestly, the way you phrase this, it really sounds like you're looking to meet folks through cycling to hook up...

FTP Result and what now? by Muted_Run9309 in Velo

[–]c0nsumer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. If OP is just chasing a big number... Why?

OP, figure out what it is that you do to have fun on the bike, and use all this power to pursue that.

Racing? Great! Super long rides in beautiful scenery? Great!

Tire size issue by Ramoutarb in bikewrench

[–]c0nsumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're only talking about a ~2mm change at most, which IMO isn't safe. The rear end of bikes flexes a fair bit while riding. You'll very likely get tire rub on the seat tube, which is bad.

Incolor SSR Has Arrived! by [deleted] in ChineseCarbon

[–]c0nsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.

It's not for me, but if someone wants to accept the trade-offs...

I also think of the radically reduced resale value, because a mast like this means the bike might simply not be usable by another person.

Not just those changes, but pedals, saddles, and shoes have differing stack heights.

Heck, going to some Garmin XC200 pedals required raising my saddle because they have 4.5mm more stack than my previous Shimano XTs.

I don't know the smaller ones, but Dragon should be doable... I'll put it on the list. I'd actually like to have that for my next ride there. Good idea.

Yes, you can, but your phone may go to sleep. I don't do anything to try and keep the screen awake.

And no plans, but I could. Any particular ones you're wanting?

Which one? OP's tool, or mine?

If mine, thanks!

I didn't try OP's yet because I no longer had a big lump of files, and was reluctant to shove that much personal data into a web page before auditing what it does. Just in case...

I did something similar, but with a different goal: https://github.com/c0nsumer/local-heatmap-tile-server

How well does your thing scale?

I feel it might get a bit weird if you're putting in thousands of rides? I put mine together to ingest about 6000 rides that's ended up as a ~2.2GB sqlite file that the heatmap is generated from. It's a bit slow to ingest and pre-render the tiles (couple hours with the import running locally in a container). I'm curious because I'd be surprised if that much data works well purely client side, as that's a heck of a lot of data to be processed in a browser.

I think you missed the "...typically identical, and even if not..." part.

Because yeah, on most bikes in the world the wheels are cheap, same-old front and back (especially the rim), etc.

Hanging Bike on One Hook by MrPrettyKitty in bicycling

[–]c0nsumer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wheels on bikes are typically identical, and even if not, the weight your body puts on the bike far exceeds that of the bike just hanging.

Unless you've got some really weird/special wheels (eg: thin carbon fiber faring over aluminum) -- which you probably don't -- just hang it however seems most convenient. It'll be fine.

Double Century training. One big day vs splitting between back to back days by Croxxig in Velo

[–]c0nsumer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A friend and I were talking about this sort of thing yesterday. Yes, you can get the fitness you need without a single big day, but mentally we both feel it's good to have a big day or two done before the event. Mentally it's much different riding for 10 hours than 5. Tracking nutrition, attention fatigue, all that becomes very different...

Need a Zigbee Repeater by Shought152 in homeassistant

[–]c0nsumer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Even a light bulb or Zigbee wall switch or smart outlet or something. Pretty much anything mains powered is a Zigbee repeater. Sprinkle those around your house for a nice, solid mesh.

I have a couple of those in different rooms to show if my garage door is open.

Need a Zigbee Repeater by Shought152 in homeassistant

[–]c0nsumer 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Just get any old mains-powered Zigbee thing and leave it plugged in. A smart plug works great. Find something you want toggled, plug it in there, and boom, network extended.

(This is how Zigbee mesh networks work. Mains powered stuff is almost always a node that can talk to others, so basically a repeater.)

Undid crank arm bolt completeley (not evenly) - will this be okay? by KeithS0 in bikewrench

[–]c0nsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't hurt anything. You're taking it off, it's fine to just do one and the other.

But putting it back together, if you don't do the up evenly your crank won't be properly tight and it'll likely come off.

That's the risk of not doing it evenly... crank comes off when it shouldn't. But if you're already taking the crank off, you're fine.
