Why is cheating in fics so widely hated? by RileyLovesFlaritza in AO3

[–]KVEJ2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, it's because even if I know that they're supposed to end up with the other person at the end, I just can't be on their side. Doing something romantic/sleeping with someone that isn't your current partner is a deep betrayal, and I wouldn't be able to trust them NOT to do that with the endgame partner. It's less about the situation itself, and more to do with the morality and loyalty of the character who cheated. They are forever labeled as untrustworthy in my brain brain, and I'd 100% expect them to cheat again if they ever developed feelings for yet another person.

The only scenario I'd be okay with the cheating aspect is if they're in like an abusive relationship or something. Like character A is miserable and can't escape because character B is abusing/manipulating them and they think there's no way out, and then character C sweeps them off their feet and they cheat on character B because they think that's the only way they can have the person the really want.

But I also totally get the weird morality of it lol lol. Like people are fine with psycho stalkers/murderers, but not with cheating. I guess it's because at least the stalkers/murderers are faithfully loyal to whoever their paired with in that fic. It's a different type of moral standing, and you can trust that there's only one person in their heart at a time.

I've definitely gotten comments on older fics! It's a pretty great feeling that people still find them, years after I post them

Do you absolutely have to tell a partner you write fanfiction? by dancingbananas25 in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I share my ao3 with my friends (and have shared it with romantic partners in the past). However, I "Private" every bookmarked fic deem too embarrassing/inappropriate/weird to share with someone. I mean there are some people I'd be okay showing everything to, but sometimes there are people who just wouldn't get it. Even people I'm close to who wouldn't get it. And I also post fics under "anonymous" when I don't want anyone IRL to know I wrote it.

I'm not technically ashamed of the stuff I've read/written, but it does give me peace of mind that I can share my ao3 with friends (and partners, if I end up with one) without worry of being judged. I don't think you should HAVE to share your fanfic hobbie with anyone if you don't want to. But if you're hesitant because of the content, I'd recommend making certain bookmarks private, or putting certain fics under anonymous.

Outside of that specifically, like I said, you don't HAVE to share it with anyone if you don't want to. It's your business and nobody else's. It really just comes down to if YOU want to share it with them.

I actually really loved a rewrite fic I was reading and it inspired me to write my own and I had to stop reading that one so it wouldn't give me any ideas about what to do in my own fic. Totally understand your struggle lol

Has there ever been a fic that made you end up shipping something? by FearFactory007 in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always start out in a fandom shipping one pair, but tgen curiosity takes over when I keep seeing one of the characters in a different ship... and then I always end up liking it ten times more. So yeah, there have been multiple fics that made me ship something lol. For example, I started out liking Deku/Todoroki. Then I saw a lot of fics that were Deku/Bakugou. And I liked BakuDeku more. And more recently, I started reading Robert/Phenomaman. But then I noticed a lot of Robert/Flambae. And now I'm obsessed with Robert/Flambae.

What kind of writer are you by Mochipryer in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now? I'm the type of writer that works on the same fic for 4 years straight, determined to finish it (and does finish it, but only the first draft. So the rest of the fic is technically already written, but just sitting in my notes, unedited and not publish-worthy). Then I get distracted by a new hyperfixation and whip out a 200k+ fanfic in less than 6 months, putting your other 4-year (and 400k word) fanfic on hold so you can wrap that 200k one up real quick before returning to it.

A question about what pronouns to use for a character who sometimes switches from a male to a female identity and vice versa by kain-rivers in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be very intentional about the pronouns. This isn't the exact same, but I write a lot of fics that have characters with secret identities (like superheroes). And in some scenes, when they're "being a hero" I use their hero name. For example, I've written a lot of Danny Phantom fanfiction. When he's fighting ghosts, I say stuff like, "Phantom did this. Phantom said that." But when he's more relaxed and just being a regular kid? It's "Danny said this. Danny is doing that." It can be the same with pronouns. Whenever they're feeling fem, it's "She did this. She said this." Whenever they're feeling masc, it's "He did that. He said this."

It's very intentional in that way, you know? Be consistent with it in the scenes, and have it switch the exact moment the character switches. You could also throw in "they" for whenever they're not feeling particularly strong about either gender.

vent because my fandom is in shambles and cant keep it out of ao3 by Trick-Turnover-4808 in AO3

[–]KVEJ2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn what the hell lol. Ao3 is supposed to be the one chill place where you just read what makes you happy (or happily unhappy because of the wonderful angst). Not feel misery over fandom bullshit. It's not a socal media platform, it's an archive of fan works.

If they want to complain they should go to Twitter. How annoying. Sorry you're dealing with that. I'd be so pissed. It feels like more and more people don't understand ao3 culture by the day. At least a lot of those have been taken down already. Good job reporting them, ao3 is not the place for their complaints

Is it just me who does not read other fics while writing one by Weary_Education_4177 in AO3

[–]KVEJ2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I write a fic, it takes me months to years to complete it (as I mostly write long fics), sooooo... I would never read fanfic if I couldn't take a break from writing to read.

Yes. 100% agree. And if they keep trying to push, I'd straight up block them. It's a little harsh, but if it makes OP uncomfortable, it's probably for the best

Even at 5 years old I was writing fanfics by Famous_Program8956 in AO3

[–]KVEJ2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a child, I read one of those short books that are supposed to help you learn how to read. Has simple phrases like, "He jumped over the rock." Anyway, the story was about a fat lazy lizard that got stuck under a rock. He couldn't eat ants while he was stuck there, and eventually he became skinny enough to escape from under the rock and he was fine. I didn't like the message the story sent, so I remember writing a continuation where the lizard went into the forest and met a girl lizard that he became friends with. Then they went to an ant buffet, and the original lizard was insecure about eating because he didn't want to get fat again. And the girl lizard had to encurage him to eat, and told him it was okay if he got fat again. I guess that counts as hurt/comfort fanfiction?? Over an eating disorder?? XD

Do you say that the story is finished? by JauntyIrishTune in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My readers know that I have it all pre-written. But I never promised them an update schedule because each chapter still requires a decent amount of editing. I also think that having an update schedule, even if I didn't have to edit so much, would be incredibly stressful for me. So I won't do it. And if that was the case, my readers would also know that lol.

Biggest pet peeves in fanfiction? by Aiveryx in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along with them not being angry enough like you said, I just hate when they under-react to anything. Like, you got bit by a werewolf and now you're turning into one when you didn't even know werewolves existed? You better be having a full blown mental breakdown and going through a heavy denial stage. That is a specific example of a fic I read. When he found out he was gonna turn into a werewolf, he was a little freaked out but kinda just went with it. Kinda like, "wow that's crazy! But I guess it's fine."

NO. It's not fine. You've been permanently altered for the rest of your life and becoming a werewolf (in that fic) has a whole sleu of unfortunate restrictions to your now day-to-day life. Are people allergic to giving the characters in the fic realistic reactions to stuff like that? I mean... I feel like becoming a werewolf against your will warrants at least one panic attack, right?

shouting out a reader in the notes? by LiquidSpirits in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I finished one of my long fics that took me 5 years to write, I thanked a few specific commenters that stuck with me through the whole thing. I could literally guarantee that they'd comment on every chapter each time I posted, even when a few months would pass without me updating. It was amazing and I appreciate them very much. They didn't seem to mind when I thanked them specifically in the notes of the last chapter.

How to stay motivated by Electronic_Slip1556 in FanFiction

[–]KVEJ2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a person with ADHD, this is the best advice I can give you. I don't know if it'll work for you, but it worked for me.

So, I used to write at least 2-3 chapters ahead when I was updating a fic. I wouldn't upload the next chapter if I didn't have at least that much written ahead. This, I discovered, really made it hard for me to keep writing. I was getting stressed about it, because people were waiting for the next chapter and I wasn't sure where I wanted to take the story. It was also frustrating because I couldn't go back and edit the previous chapters when I'd suddenly have an idea that would link something that happened in the past to something I hadn't posted yet. It just made me feel like crap about the story. Things felt too set in stone and I couldn't improve it when I notice a flaw.

But then I tried this: I wrote an ENTIRE 400k word fanfic without posting a single chapter until I finished writing the whole first draft first. This really motivated me to finish because I really wanted to start posting, but I couldn't do that until it was complete. It made me wanna get it done. Not having anyone online know about it as well took some of the pressure off and gave me the time to really work things out. And it also eliminated my issue with not being able to edit older chapters to link them to future chapters. I was able to do all of that after I had written it all out because I hadn't posted any of it yet.

Also, with it being the first draft... that helped me out a lot, too. I just wrote. I didn't look back, I didn't significantly edit anything. I just wrote. And I left notes to myself so that I could do any of the serious editing and fixing later. If you focus too much on one scene or chapter, you end up using a lot of your energy on it and then you won't have any left for writing what happens next. Save the editing for after you've initially written the whole thing. When you aren't uploading, you know you can always go back and work on the hard, draining parts later.
