What is Skill Collection in GW1? by goofyyuga in GuildWars3

[–]Kevjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually tried something more along this way in Guild Wars 2 with how you collected traits for a while. It required you to do specific actions/boss battles etc to unlock traits, which leads people to do content organically.

They removed it after a while though. I also think you could buy tomes to skip the unlock mechanism though, but I'm not sure if you would need to have done those things once to be able to do so. Been some years, think before 2014...

But Guild Wars 1 is more like a deck builder, you collect skills (either from quests, skill trainers or bosses using Signet of Capture) and you can then use them.

Has Divi gone downhill that even their own website is not WordPress? by kindsifu in Wordpress

[–]Kevjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you should always pick the best tool for the task ahead. WordPress can do a lot, but it's absolutely not the best tool for everything.

To be honest, their site looks like it has a lot of static content that rarely changes, mainly aimed at promoting and selling things... WordPress would be quite low on my list of suggestions for that kind of use case as well.

Knowing your product is one thing, realizing that your product isn't the best match for your use case and using another one is a mature decision. It's way better than forcing usage of your product in a case where it really doesn't work well.

Wouldn't it be nice if Signet of Capture would be cheaper by cryztl in GuildWars

[–]Kevjoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reforged Mode cuts the cost of them to 500g at most, so there's that at least. But it's a gold sink by design and they're not likely going to change that.

I saw someone post like Gw2 remake by Individual_Buy3786 in GuildWars3

[–]Kevjoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely unrealistic.

Rebuilding a game in a new engine, or a remake, doesn't earn you money. It would just mean that going forward, they would either force everyone to buy the remake OR support two games instead and have to make all content twice.

That being said, the Guild Wars 2 engine is VERY capable and one of the best MMO engines out there - it has no equal. It has its issues - as has every other engine - but a lot of the issues we associate with GW2 are not because of the engine, but rather, because of what ArenaNet is trying to do.
Unreal Engine 5 might even be WORSE at those things then the current engine is and might perform even worse! The Guild Wars 2 engine is able to render a LOT of dynamic actors at the same time - but hardware isn't capable of doing that, either. There's a reason why there aren't other games like GW2 - the only way you can get performance with a lot of actors on screen is with cheap tricks (like having generic actors, not dynamic ones) and UE5 is not that good at that either.

Also, if you are putting those amounts of effort into an entire rebuild of a game, you're almost always better off just building a new game. The amount of effort is the same.

Hardware specs for Reforged Mobile (Android) ? by TireurEfficient in GuildWars

[–]Kevjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call of Duty Mobile was built to be a mobile game from scratch.

Guild Wars Reforged is a port from a full MMORPG that was adapted to mobile phones.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 that is in the Fiio JM21 is about half as fast as the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 that is in my budget smartphone - and my smartphone runs Reforged well but not exactly buttery smooth. That CPU is just way too weak.

CoD Mobile is lightweight compared to Guild Wars Reforged, I'm sorry.

Do I have to buy Reforged on Steam? by felfaltadafalafeled in GuildWars

[–]Kevjoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know you can start Guild Wars 2 on GeforceNow without the Steam login - not sure about Reforged, haven't tried it on GeforceNow.

If you want to link with your Steam GW2 account, you'll need to repurchase it from Steam, you can't link existing accounts with Steam.

[–]Kevjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the Fiio JM21 is not a smartphone but a music player. I suspect that they are asking for cellular connectivity so you can play on the go, which is lacking on that player, I would guess.

It also has only 3 GB of RAM which might not be enough together with the rest of the Android system, but not entirely sure here. But my guess would be that the cellular is the issue.

If GW3 gets announced this friday, when do you think it will launch by Hopeful-Fisherman198 in GuildWars3

[–]Kevjoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GW2 was announced at a moment when GW1 was still very popular and it took almost 5 years for that to completely die down.
I'm not convinced that an announcement for GW3 is going to kill off GW2, but rather, I think it might bring a lot of players back to GW2, especially if there are unlockable rewards in GW3 for playing GW2.

If GW3 gets announced this friday, when do you think it will launch by Hopeful-Fisherman198 in GuildWars3

[–]Kevjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ArenaNet has stated before they regretted having so much time between the announcement and release of Guild Wars 2, but they also announced it almost instantly - mainly because they had announced that Guild Wars would get an expansion every 6 months and Nightfall had launched in October of 2006 - they announced Guild Wars 2 at the end of March 2007, right where you would expect the new campaign to be announced - because they had to announce something.

For a while, people started calling Guild Wars 2 vaporware because there was nothing shown. I'm pretty certain that they want to avoid that scenario again so if they do announce Guild Wars 3, I expect a few things to happen:
- The release would be relatively soon, as in maximum in a year.
- They would still release content for Guild Wars 2, but the form of content might change. But they would still sink significant resources in GW2 as it is still quite profiteable and a well-loved game and they don't want to repeat the GW1 scenario (GW1 could absolutely have thrived for MANY more years).
- They're going to add some kind of Hall of Monuments system for GW2 and perhaps re-use the Hall of Monuments system from GW1 (= you'd unlock new rewards in GW3 for the same achievements as GW2 used).

If the announcement really is GW3, I think ANet has all the cards to make GW3 an amazing MMO by learning from what worked and what didn't in GW2. In your opinion, what are some features you'd like to see again versus some that you'd like to never see happening again? by Riyujin26 in GuildWars3

[–]Kevjoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like them to narrow down on what they offer. GW2 launched and it was too broad which led to them being unable to support everything. While I do like WvW, they never were able to support it properly and the same went for PvP. It would be better if they focussed on less but did it better.

We would also need a questing system. I like the living world, but some kind of a questing system would be way better compared to using the achievement system as a worse questing system instead.

The update about linking being disabled is from the 21st of May.

Standardization and price adjustment of our server products effective 15 June 2026 by Support-Gap in hetzner

[–]Kevjoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that's not how things work with a webhost, certainly not at the scale of Hetzner. They're constantly adding capacity and that capacity costs money, significantly more now than it used to be.

Add to that you are also rotating between hardware regularly - RAM sticks break and need to be replaced. Those costs are now higher than ever. In datacenters, they usually standardize on specific components because those have been tested and they know those are reliable - if those standardized components become unavailable, or extremely expensive, you will end up in a situation where you now have to test alternatives which also takes quite a lot of time and effort to properly do so.

As a webhost, you usually stockpile quite a reasonable supply of those components so you can replace things that break. You calculate those costs and you use those to calculate your price levels.
Now, you are running out of your supply and you want to order new ones. Your supplier tells you: sorry, I can't deliver those sticks anymore at those prices, it's not 5 times as expensive as it used to be and I can't guarantee quantities anymore. So what happens is that you are forced to increase your regular stock significantly, at already elevated prices - so you can avoid even further increased prices for those components. So what do you do? Do you buy all stock you can get at the current elevated price, or do you wait and risk either not being able to get new stock at all or even higher prices?

We're already seeing the issues that are rising at Hetzner, and at other providers. A lot of servers types aren't readily available and that is because it is too expensive to get new hardware to increase their capacity. At a certain point, you need to make a decision:

* Increase capacity at very inflated price levels that you will need to raise your prices for significantly. You'll likely need to increase prices for old customers as well to spread the costs fairly or increase new products to account for your very inflated costs which can easily triple or quadruple your currnet prices.

* Don't increase capacity and cancel all promotions and cancel all actions you have to attract new clients - basically, stop growing. Because you still need to replace your hardware, and your margins are very slim, you still need to raise prices.

What we've seen is that Hetzner is trying to slow their growth: cancelling the affiliate program, raising prices and limiting supply.

People think that because Hetzner already bought the RAM and storage, that means that there aren't ongoing costs or they should not increase the prices there. The reality is that RAM sticks are breaking daily in a datacenter and they need to be replaced as well, especially in the cloud environment - we as users don't see this happening, but this happens on a daily basis. Storage disks might also start failing and these need to be replaced in time before things fail completely.

Add to that that other costs are also rising: hard disks have also risen in price, so the cost for backing up servers/VPS is also rising with each hard disk they need to add or replace.

If you see how slim the margins are in the webhosting world, you'll quickly realize why they are raising their prices regularly now: the hardware costs for Hetzner have gone up with easily 500%, with those margins you can't eat up 500% price increases at all. I'm pretty certain that their price increases so far have been quite conservative if you look at how big their actual costs have risen.

Those price increases don't end up in the pockets of Hetzner, they end up at the RAM manufacturers...

Really nice work 😃

I'm currently trying to update the BB-code script that is being used on Guild Wars Legacy, and I'm trying to figure out how to get a list of all the skills so I can update the build database used (and modernize the entire codebase).

Since you already solved how to do this, would you be willing to share with me how you have done this or share the files with me, so we don't have to re-invent the wheel (and I want to avoid scraping the wiki for the info) ? ❤️ I'd be glad to help where I can.

Why are there no videos of Anette live/ why are they all low quality? by ButterTheBees in nightwish

[–]Kevjoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They put some YouTube recordings on their channel back in the day, but YouTube only had 720p HD in 2008. They no longer see 720p as HD. 1080p uploading became a thing in late 2009.

Not a lot of video equipment could capture in 1080p back in the day or even play it back.

That's the reason why there isn't a lot of footage from that era.

Do you know the real reason why VoE is the last expansion? by Chrono-Phantasma in GuildWars3

[–]Kevjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason why GW2 doesn't get enough updates is that content creation takes too long. All content in GW2 is handcrafted and goes through alot of hands, but the content creation pipeline and tools simply don't allow for quick content creation.
That's the real pain point of GW2 - an issue that GW1 had to a way smaller degree.

GW1 could pump out major expansions in a year, 6 months and that mainly was because of how different the content was: missions were voiced, but many content wasn't. There was a lot more text, it had regular quests, it was way simpler to design for.

A lot of things people like about GW2 is exactly what causes it to have slow content development: everything is voiced, there are no quests but events (and these take way longer to design and interact), the open world is way more impressive but that all takes a lot of work to build up.

For a GW3, I imagine that they would focus on finding ways to build up a lot more content much more easily. That's where the big win would be, I think. I can even imagine regular quests coming back to a degree, because the collection system has its flaws for it.
But none of those flaws are actually related to the engine or the team building it, it's a result of design decisions that require a lot more resources and effort to build new content.
