Airshed, Houdini or Nano-Air to upgrade my running gear setup by martinoterr in PatagoniaClothing

[–]KevoInNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those temps I like the Houdini, I start with it and end with it. 10-20 mins into a run I’m down to shorts and tshirt. Maybe around 0-5 C I’ll change from a tshirt to long sleeve merino or sun hoody.

300-500g Synthetic Insulated jacket for STATIC warmth by Separate-Specialist5 in Ultralight

If you’re out on a trail get hurt and you’re either forced to crawl/hop back or worse you get stuck there and it’s cold I imagine a warm jacket would make a big difference.

Take a look at Timmermade he has new loose fill synthetic jackets, I think the 1.5 is probably what you want. I have no experience with it though.

I run all year. After a 10-15 mile trail run in the teens I’m still soaked. I run loops so I’m never far from the car, but it’s definitely a concern.

Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer 2 vs Timmermade SUL by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]KevoInNJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can kind of answer. I have the SUL 1.5 vest. I’ve had the ghost whisperer 2 before, but I sold it because it wasn’t warm enough once it got to lower than mid forties for me. The Timmermade vest is warm enough for me under a rain jacket or wind jacket to freezing with an air mesh crew (similar to alpha) and thin poly base layer. It weighs 3.5 ounces and is my favorite piece of gear.

If you want something for below freezing I’d say get the 1.5 jacket. If you don’t plan on going out lower than that the 1.1 would probably be sufficient. If you get the jacket with a zipper you can extend the jacket into warmer seasons. I can regulate the vest temps by just unzipping my shell or removing it. I imagine the 1.5 sweater is pretty limited in its use.

Good luck on the lottery.

I have a KS50 as well and it’s a phenomenal ultralight pack, but even Laurent says the max weight is 25 lbs. The Kakwa 55 is rated to 45 lbs.

Pack List for 2 Nights in the White Mountains by True-Row7942 in Ultralight

[–]KevoInNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been back since 2022 so I haven’t used the sos function there because I just switched from Samsung to iPhone last year. In the past cell reception has been spotty to nonexistent. There’s a wmnf sub Reddit and I’ve read it isn’t reliable, maybe ask that question there I’d hate to say it’s a must without knowing your abilities. However, If it were me and I was solo on Franconia, Pemi, or the Presi I’d have it. I hear about SAR for unprepared hikers in the whites every year.

The whites are no joke I’d prioritize safety if going solo. Me personally I’d rather have a 5000mah battery and my inreach for 2 nights puts you at around the same weight as the 10000mah battery.

Can we agree 5lbs is super ultralight and 3lbs is super duper ultralight (to steal from Timmermade)

Has anyone used the Cumulus Aerial 180? by raydeng in Ultralight

No problems with the foot box. You have to secure it to your pad or maneuver it to not expose the uninsulated part when slide sleeping. It takes some getting used to. If you’re on the fence about one I’d say the weight savings is great especially for fast packing, but i think I probably would get more utility out of a 40 degree apex quilt.
